Team Ireland’s Natalia Fasciszewska will come home from the European U23 Championship with silver following a thrilling final against Paris Olympics silver medalist, Poland’s Julia Szeremeta.
The 20-year-old, who boxes out of Castlebar BC, made her journey to the finals with wins over Azerbaijan’s Aynur Mikayilova, Gabriella Weerheimand of the Netherlands and Georgia’s Khuraman Kausumov. This is Natalia’s first-time representing Ireland at this level.
High Performance Director, Jon Mackey, who led the team in Budapest said “An excellent series of performances from Natalia throughout the competition, all the more notable as this is her first outing at this level. She, her family and all at Castlebar BC can rightfully be proud."
Castlebar Boxing Club also extended congratulations to Natalia.
"What a girl. At 20 years of age and first time ever boxing in European championships, she brings home a silver medal. Only losing out in the final to a girl who is ranked as the No. 1 elite level boxer in the world at 57kg.
"Hold your head high Natalia. You've done us all very very proud."
Castlebar Boxing Club also had further reason to celebrate this afternoon as Rasheed Momoh defeated Padraig Corduff (St Anne's BC, Westport) to win the 85kg title at the National Intermediate Championships in the National Stadium.
