George Nkencho (27) died after suffering fatal gunshot wounds in the incident outside his family home at Manorfields Drive, Clonee, Co Dublin.

The former head of the firearms training unit at the Garda College in Templemore, Co Tipperary, Sergeant James Ryan, provided a detailed analysis of the deployment of tasers by two ASU officers during the fatal incident.

The witness told the inquest he believed his use of his firearm to discharge six shots was “necessary” and “proportionate”

Garda A told the sixth day of the inquest at Dublin District Coroner’s Court that he justified his use of lethal force because he feared for his life after Mr Nkencho lunged at him with a knife at close quarters.

George Nkencho (27) died after being shot by members of the Garda Armed Support Unit (ASU) in the incident outside his family home at Manorfields Drive, Clonee, Co Dublin, on December 30th, 2020, shortly after he had been involved in a disturbance at a nearby supermarket.

Gloria Nkencho said that gardai outside her home either ‘did not listen or hear me’ as she tried to tell them her brother had mental health issues.

Emmanuel Nkencho (25) told the inquest at Dublin District Coroner’s Court on Friday that there was nothing unusual about his brother’s behaviour earlier that day.

A dispatcher for armed gardaí said he did not see information relayed by a colleague that Mr Nkencho had mental health issues.

The third day of the inquest on Thursday heard that the deceased continued to wave a knife in “an extremely aggressive” manner even after being shot by members of the Garda Armed Support Unit (ASU) and when tasers appeared to have had no effect on him.

A brief sitting of Dublin District Coroner’s Court heard on Monday that around 50-60 witnesses are expected to be called to give evidence at an inquest which is expected to last over two weeks.
