Local notes: Two Uniteds contest nine goal thriller
S&F United's senior women's team who are preparing for a Connacht FA Shield quarter-final against Mayo rivals Ballyglass FC next Sunday. They advanced to the last eight courtesy of a 3-0 win against Ballina Town.
S&F United’s men’s team got their 2026 Castlecourt Hotel Mayo Premier League campaign underway at home to Snugboro United and were unfortunate to find themselves edged out by the odd goal in nine, in what was an absolute thriller at Green Road.
They took the lead through Luke Ruane and while Snugboro soon equalised, S&F regained the lead through a goal by James Duffy.
The visitors hit a brace to hit the front for the first time in the game before Tony McDermott levelled matters at 3-3. Again Snugboro hit back to back goals and while James Duffy added his second goal of the game, this time from the penalty spot, it wasn’t enough to prevent Snugboro from taking all three points on a 5-4 scoreline.
S&F United’s next game in the Castlecourt Hotel Mayo Premier League is next Sunday, March 15 away to Castlebar Celtic ‘B’.

The under-15 soccer team from St Joseph’s Secondary School are awaiting a venue – and an opponent – for their FAI Schools All-Ireland Minor ‘B’ National Cup semi-final which is due to take place next month at 1pm on Tuesday, April 14. It comes after they enjoyed a thrilling 3-2 win over Mayo rivals St Brendan’s College, Belmullet in the Connacht Final.
St Joseph’s came from a goal behind to level matters through Finn Sweeney’s goal ten minutes before half-time. A scoreless second-half – due mainly to some excellent saves by the St Brendan’s goalkeeper – meant the game went to extra-time.
Again, the sides remained inseparable during the first period but a goal after the restart by Ronnie Deacy gave the Foxford boys a 2-1 lead only for St Brendan’s to score an equaliser with five minutes left to play.
Just when it seemed that penalties would be required, Jamie Loughney conjured up a winner for St Joseph’s with two minutes left on the clock.
The Foxford students are due to play the yet to be decided Ulster champions in the final.
