Impressive display by Barry Langan

The Athletics Ireland U17 team of 34 athletes and eight team managers travelled to Grangemouth, Scotland, to compete in the Scottish U17 Championships during the weekend of August 17 and 18 last.

The Irish team was chosen from the recent juvenile national championships. Representing the Irish selection was U17 javelin gold medal winner and Ballinrobe native Barry Langan, who threw an impressive personal best of 56.24 metres – almost 12 metres ahead of Scotland’s Callum James. Barry is a member of Lake District Athletic Club.

Well done, Barry, from your many friends and supporters in Ballinrobe.

Great win for Ballinrobe Town U18s

A spirited display by Ballinrobe Town saw them secure the Helen Johnson Under-18 Division One title, after they defeated Glenhest Rovers 3-1 at The Green on Tuesday evening last.

The first half was keenly contested, and despite the hosts having the better possession ratio, the game remained scoreless at the interval.

The breakthrough finally arrived on 48 minutes when the Robesiders won a penalty which was duly dispatched by Thomas Moran.

Eight minutes later, a plucky Ballinrobe doubled their lead when the busy Theo Bellanger rattled the back of the net.

However, Glenhest refused to give up the chase and a smashing 25-yard strike from Rovers’ Ruairi Coyne on 65 minutes breathed new life into the visitors' game-plan.

Rovers upped the tempo and they very nearly restored parity on 75 minutes, only for the Town custodian Rory Devereux to produce a fine save.

With the game in the melting pot, the locals sealed the deal on 86 minutes when a brilliant through ball from Ben Place released Luke Muniz and the latter finished with aplomb.

The Ballinrobe U18 boys’ team are managed by Ian Place and Marc Hughes.

Well done to all involved.

Women win local derby

Well done to the Ballinrobe Town women’s team which recorded a splendid 3-1 victory away to Claremorris in the Women's League Division One on Monday, August 26.

It was undoubtedly Ballinrobe's best performance of the season thus far, as the Robesiders secured their first victory of the league campaign.

Claremorris led 1-0 at the interval, but a brace of goals from the deadly Abby Jennings on 54 and 70 minutes respectively swung the pendulum in Ballinrobe’s favour.

The visitors then sealed the deal on 75 minutes, courtesy of an excellent finish by the hard-working Amy Geraghty.

Overall, Ballinrobe can take plenty of positives from this performance.
