Local Notes: Tony Joyce retires from Brogans Eurospar, Belmullet after 19 years.

Congratulations and good health to Tony Joyce on his recent retirement from Brogans Eurospar in Belmullet after nineteen years as a Butcher pictured with Annette and Aileen Brogan and colleagues.
In 1937 12 families from Erris moved to Gibbstown Estate in Co Meath. The Land Commission facilitated the move, providing land and houses for the new occupants. Families from Erris, Tour Mhic Eadaigh, Donegal, Kerry and Cork were all resettled in Baile Gibb.
The surviving descendants from those families have published a brilliant book ‘Destination Gibbstown’. The book chronicles the life of the brave families who made the move in 1937 and brings the lives of the people right up to the present time. The book will be launched in Erris on Saturday, August 17, in Áras Inis Gluaire at 5pm. The books authors and the Gibbstown community will be in attendance and all are invited. It is hoped that members of the families that remained in Erris will come and renew acquaintance with their County Meath relatives.
Review of the Sports Genus so far, nobody had the Wimbledon Ladies Champion but many scored on either Carlos or Novak. Only two of you had Spain for the Euros, a few cheered England to five points. Vinegaard secured five points for many of you but Pogacar won the Tour convincingly. Nobody had Clare, a few with Cork while in the football nobody had Armagh with a very few Galway. Four events to go, many of you have underestimated the strength of Team Ireland in the Olympics. Then it's GAA, Baseball and F1.
Billy O’Connor hangs on to the lead but only just, Katie Keane, Conan Reilly and Steven Togher only one point behind with Kian and David only one point further back. It's closer than the Men's 100 metres. Thank you to Platt Reilly and Belbridge Structures.
Heritage Week 2024 is around the corner - a chance to celebrate some special aspects of our history and heritage. This year being the 200th birthday of the town, Belmullet Tidy Towns and Áras Inis Gluaire have teamed up to create a two-day event especially for 2024. Éigse agus Imirce will take place over two days – Friday, August 23 and Saturday, August 24. Taking place in Áras Inis Gluaire and in SOLAS (Scéalta an Atlantaigh), Eachléim, there will be talks, music and poems from those intimately connected to Erris and it’s fascinating past, especially the Tuke Fund and Assisted Emigration of 1882-1884. For more details of this unique event, check the Facebook Page of Belmullet Tidy Towns / Baile Slachtmhar Bhéal an Mhuirthead.

As you know Steve Togher was involved in a “Quid Game” competition and had chosen Ballyglass RNLI as his charity to receive part of the funds raised. Well done to Steve and all who supported him, he has raised a generous amount of money for the service.
The wonderful volunteers and staff across the UK and Ireland gathered recently to celebrate the 200th year. From crew to fundraisers, lifeguards to shop volunteers – ‘Ballyglass RNLI have been saving lives at sea since 1824 thanks to the incredible people. With hundreds of lifeguarded beaches, lifeboat stations, shops and fundraising branches to choose from it was tough picking out just ten of our favourites’.
Congratulations to Seán Reilly on completing his Tier 1 passout with assessor trainer Seán Ginnelly. In attendance observing was Ballyglass station's assessor trainer Allen Murray. Sean has attended over 25 inshore lifeboat exercises and services over the past year showing his commitment and dedication to Ballyglass Lifeboat Station. Sean has also recently transferred over to the ALB having completed all the necessary induction units. All at Ballyglass RNLI thank Sean for all his hard work and look forward to many years together afloat serving the maritime community.

‘It’s the brand new Irish comedy play by Tommy Marren – writer of ‘It’s The Real McCoy’, ‘3 Hail Mary’s’ and ‘Nobody’s Talking To Me’ – and it promises audiences another night of rip-roaring comedy in Aras Inis Gluaire on September 27-28.
Maureen Corcoran decides to find love for her two maturing sons (Joe and Pat) who have no interest in marriage. She spots an advertisement in the Ireland’s Own magazine where two equally ‘mature’ ladies (Daisy and Rose) are on the lookout for romance and without consulting her sons Maureen invites the ladies to come and inspect the ‘talent’ for themselves!
However, Joe and Pat hatch an intricate plan that will surely scare the ladies off – or will it? It’s just one hilarious catastrophe after another as no obstacle is going to put Daisy and Rose off the ‘scent’!
Get ready for wall-to-wall comedy with rare diseases, tongue twisters, a missing wife, an overdue eternity ring, a ‘dodgy’ sponge cake and news of an old flame all adding to the mayhem and madness – not to mention the ‘sting in the tail’ at the very end!
Will Matches be struck or could someone get burned by an Old Flame?
Deepest sympathies to the family of PJ McIntyre, Manchester, and formerly of Broadhaven, Ballyglass, Belmullet, peacefully at his family home in Manchester; Agnes Carolan (née McAndrew), The Glen, Glencastle, Bunnahowen; Bridie O’Boyle (née Keane), Emlybeg South, Binghamstown; Sheila Green (nee Nealon), Lincoln, UK and formerly of Carrowmore, Barnatra; and John Monaghan Glosh, Blacksod, Belmullet.
