Local Notes: Tidy Towns estate winners revealed in Claremorris

Cluain Aoibhinn and Lisnaboley Lane have been announced as the winners of this year’s SuperValu Tidy Towns Residents’ Estates Competition in Claremorris. The results mark back-to-back success for the Cluain Aoibhinn estate, which also claimed the top spot in the inaugural competition last year.
The competition, now in its second year, was organised by Claremorris Tidy Towns with the support of Kavanagh’s SuperValu. It aims to celebrate the efforts of local residents in keeping their estates clean, vibrant, and welcoming, with judging based on criteria such as overall cleanliness, biodiversity initiatives, and floral displays.
A spokesperson for Claremorris Tidy Towns complimented all who entered, praising the clear pride of place on show throughout the town.
“There’s great work being done in estates across Claremorris. It’s uplifting to see such strong community spirit and care for the environment.”
Gratitude was extended to SuperValu Claremorris for their continued sponsorship and to the local Tidy Towns volunteers for coordinating the event.
Plans are also being considered to expand the competition in future years to include streets and roadways, encouraging even wider community participation.
A great evening of theatre and laughter is promised on Saturday, November 1st, as The Acorn Players from Mohill bring their acclaimed production of to the Town Hall.
The three-act comedy was written by award-winning playwright John McManus and has been delighting audiences around the country. It comes to Claremorris for one night only.
The performance is a fundraiser for Claremorris and District Lions Club, with all proceeds going towards the club’s ongoing support of local causes and individuals in need.
Tickets are available online or through the Town Hall box office. With plenty of laughs guaranteed, it promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable night in support of a worthy cause.
Congratulations to Liam Óg Horkan who won last week’s Claremorris GAA 50/50 draw, taking home an impressive €1,078.
Liam Óg, who is the captain of local rivals Garrymore, purchased the lucky ticket in Killeen’s.
The club extended sincere thanks to all who continue to take part in the weekly draw, with tickets sold both online and in local outlets across Claremorris. Each entry helps support the club’s ongoing development and youth activities.
Pat Gilligan was the winner of last week’s Claremorris AFC 50/50 draw, claiming €550. The winning ticket was sold in Gilligan’s.
Claremorris AFC thanked everyone who entered the draw and reminded supporters that each ticket sold contributes directly to the development of local football and the club’s youth programmes. Tickets remain available each week in shops and pubs around the town as well as online.
Claremorris Musical Society will host a Halloween Table Quiz and Fancy Dress Night this Friday, October 31st, in the Dalton Inn Hotel, Claremorris, starting at 9pm.
Teams of four can take part for €40, with a cash prize for the winning team and prizes for the best costumes. There will also be a raffle on the night.
Taugheen National School, in association with the McWilliam Park Hotel and the Cancer Fund for Children, has announced that tickets are now on sale for an evening with celebrity chef Neven Maguire.
The event will take place in the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, on Sunday, November 17th. Doors will open at 7pm for a craft fair, followed by Neven’s cookery demonstration at 8pm.
Tickets are priced at €20 each and are available from the school or from the following outlets: Sam’s Stores and Hunt’s Filling Station in Claremorris; Murphy’s Newsagents and Jennings Butchers in Ballinrobe; The Shop in Ballyhaunis; Hollymount Stores in Hollymount; O’Connor’s Spar in Cong; The Old Ground Restaurant in Knock; Quinn’s Newsagents in Tuam; and the SVP Charity Shop in Castlebar.
All proceeds from the event will go to Daisy Lodge, the Cancer Fund for Children’s therapeutic short break centre.
The annual general neeting of Garrymore GAA Club will take place on Thursday, November 6th, at 8pm in Garrymore Hall.
Members wishing to submit motions for discussion are asked to email them to the Club Secretary at secretary.garrymore.mayo@gaa.ie no later than 5pm on Sunday, November 2nd.
Nominations for club positions are also invited. Members may nominate any full member of their choice, whether outgoing or not. Each nomination must be proposed and seconded by two full members, and the consent of the nominee must be obtained in advance.
Completed nomination forms should be returned by email to the Club Secretary by 5pm on Sunday, November 2nd. A copy of the nomination form is available via the post or by emailing communications.garrymore.mayo@gaa.ie.
Local singer-songwriter Gerry Carney and his band take to the stage at the Trinity Arts Centre, Castlerea on this Thursday, October 30th. The concert, featuring a guest appearance by Frank McCaffrey, promises an evening of memorable music and entertainment. Doors open at 7.30pm and the show starts at 8pm.
Tickets for the concert are available at several local outlets, including Hillside Service Station in Claremorris, The Gem in Ballyhaunis, and Cahill’s SuperValu in Castlerea. Tickets can also be purchased online via eventbrite.ie.

The death has occurred of Mary Carty (née Prendergast) of Carramore, Knock. Mary died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, in the wonderful care of the staff at Mayo Hospice, Castlebar.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Michael, her parents Maureen and Frank Prendergast, and her sister Eileen.
Mary will be deeply missed by her daughters Nicola and Lindsay, son Michael, adored grandchildren Jack, Mark, Ben, Millie, Michael and Tilly, sister Christine, brothers Nigel and Frankie, sons-in-law John and Damien, daughter-in-law Samantha, sisters-in-law Anne, Joan, Kathleen and Gloria, brother-in-law Johnny, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Mary’s remains reposed at the Marian Funeral Home, Knock on Saturday evening, with removal to St John the Baptist Church, Knock. Funeral Mass took place on Sunday morning, followed by burial in the local cemetery.
May she rest in peace.
The death has occurred of Michael (Mickey) Tighe of Claremorris Road, Hollymount. Michael died unexpectedly at his residence on October 15th, surrounded by his heartbroken family. He was predeceased by his parents Kitty and Matt Tighe, nephew Shane Heaney and niece Máire Heaney.
Michael is deeply regretted by his loving wife Gertie, son Shane, daughter Tara Joyce (Headford), daughter-in-law Fiona, son-in-law Brian, his adored grandchildren Aoife, Cathal, Èilla and Tadhg, sisters Maureen (Hollymount), Pat (Boston), Irene (Partry) and Ann (Brickens), brother Martin (Newcastle), brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.
Michael’s remains reposed at his home in Hollymount on Sunday evening, October 19th. Funeral Mass took place on Monday in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Roundfort, followed by burial in Roundfort Cemetery.
May he rest in peace.
The death has occurred of Bridie (Bridget) Devane of Ballyglass, Scardaune, Claremorris.
Bridie was predeceased by her parents John and Catherine, brothers John James, Billy and Pete, and nephews Pat and Sean Devane.
She is sadly missed and fondly remembered by her sister Mary Kate, nephews Paul, Billy and Noel, nieces Marian and Cathy, extended family, kind neighbours, carers and many friends.
Bridie’s remains reposed at Carey’s Funeral Home, Ballindine on Wednesday evening last with removal to St Patrick’s Church, Ballyglass. Her Funeral Mass took place on Thursday followed by burial in Ballyglass Cemetery.
