Recently the Erris FCSC held their annual general meeting at the IWA Centre. The meeting was opened by chairperson, Rosaleen Lally who welcomed all in attendance and went on to give her chairperson’s report.
“As chair I am proud of the progress we have made in the last 12 months and the hard work of the management committee. Since recruiting a staff team and devising a 2024 annual plan, a lot has been done and we have completed many of the actions we set out for this year.
We have hosted events for International Women’s Day, Hello, How Are You Day, an Empowering Parent talk and more- all very positive events, well attended and received positive feedback. It has been a great start to engaging with the local community and sharing more about who we are and the work we will be doing locally.
We have also established a pilot play therapy service one morning a week, subsidized so that cost is not a barrier for families. And we continue to engage with NWSTOP on the provision of a local counselling service, 2 days per week.
We have baby massage beginning in June, plans for community education courses, a wellness connections programme and plans for a Sunset4Stop walk in August. We also continue to work on securing a suitable premises for our centre, to allow us to deliver our work plan and develop more projects and supports.
The original committee began the FRC for Erris campaign back in 2019, recognising a huge gap in services and supports. We are confident that Erris FCSC can address many of these gaps over time, be a vehicle to facilitate positive change in the community, as well as ensuring local people are at the heart of the work we do. We will play our part in having a strong and inclusive community here in Erris.’ The audited accounts were then presented to the meeting by treasurer Rosemarie Mangan. Thomas McHugh Accountants carried out the audit in line with Irish Law and Financial Reporting Standards. The accounts for 2023 were adopted and T McHugh was appointed as Auditor for the coming year.
Sub-committee reports were delivered for the Property SC, Mental Health SC, Finance SC and the HR SC. A considerable amount of work has been done across all of these key areas and the members of each were commended for their hard work and the time they have given.
An Officer Board was elected for the new term: chairperson Rosaleen Lally; vice-chairperson Margaret Heffron; company secretary Dervilia Cullotty; treasurer Majella Lavelle; vice-treasurer Dervilia Cullotty; PRO Stephanie Gallagher.
The board accepted the resignation of Rosemarie Mangan as director and treasurer. She was thanked for her time, commitment, and all she has given to the campaign and the setup of the centre. Rosemarie’s many talents, skills and good humour will be really missed.
The board also accepted the resignation of Rina Garrett, as member of the company. The current committee expressed their disappointment at losing a valued member and thanked Rina for her dedication to the project from the beginning. Noting her knowledge and experience will be greatly missed.
The current Voluntary Board of Management of Erris FCSC is Rosaleen Lally, Margaret Heffron, Dervilia Cullotty, Majella Lavelle, Teresa Gaughan, Paddy Joe Deane, Ferdia O’Mongain, Caitriona King, Stephanie Gallagher and Brendan Deane.
Co-ordinator, Leanne Barrett thanked the outgoing members and directors for all their support and hard work. And also thanked new officers and incoming directors for their involvement and commitment to the project. The centre is glad to be at this next phase and to see continued interest and new energy coming in.
The meeting also wished Margaret Heffron the very best on her retirement from Saint Brendan’s College next month. Her contribution to the lives of students, families and the school community in Erris is immeasurable.
Finally, incoming chair Rosaleen Lally addressed the matter of her candidacy in the upcoming local elections. The centre has sought professional governance advice and there is nothing within the FCSC’s governing document that prevents a candidate or local representative from being a Director of the Board. She reassured the meeting that the two roles were completely separate, and that her involvement in the centre is as an independent volunteer and community member, having been part of this project since the start in 2019. The board may if they wish vote to enter a clause into the company’s constitution that would prevent any elected representatives from sitting as director. This would be a matter for the board, should the current chair be elected to Mayo County Council.
All present were thanked once again for their attendance and participation in the meeting. And especially to the incoming Home School Liaison Co-ordinator for Saint Brendan’s, Mary Gaughan for joining the meeting.
Recently third year students from St Brendan's College, Belmullet, visited Ardnacrusha Hydro Electric Power Station in Co Clare. The students were given an in-depth tour of this pioneering power plant and learned of its engineering and historical significance when it was built by Siemens in the newly emerging Irish state of the 1920s. This interdisciplinary educational initiative was an informative and rewarding experience for both students and teachers.

This is the fourth time Belmullet Tidy Towns have organised this project and in that short time it has gone from strength to strength. This annual quiz is very important to them as it is held every year in memory of Noel Reilly who was the chairman of Belmullet Tidy Towns committee for over thirty years. Congraulations to Corclough National School on scooping the top prize. Noel was a man who was known and loved throughout Iorras and it is therefore right and appropriate that this is an event with participation from all over Iorras. The first year there were 10 teams in the competition - this year there were 24 teams. In memory of Noel, the main prize is a beautiful trophy - an image of Clan Lir - Buanchorn Noel Uí Riallaigh. Another remarkable thing about this event is all the groups that support them to make this project happen. They are truly grateful to you all. Finally the organisers sincerely thank the Noel children, now the third generation of them, still working with Bale Slachtmhar, Eva, an excellent operator for Bale Slachtmhar and Elaine; not only as chairman and office operator, but also because of the constant support she gives us in all aspects of our work. Noel will never be forgotten - may his noble soul rest in peace.
