The annual Killasser Cemetery Mass will take place on August 14, on the eve of the Feast of the Assumption. Mass will be celebrated in Meelick Cemetery on Sunday, August 4, at 9am, Kilconduff Cemetery on Monday, August 5, at 6.30pm and Midfield Cemetery on Thursday, August 15, at 7pm.

On Saturday, July 20, the Swinford Killasser LGFA U10 girls team returned to action after a brief break from matches. The intrepid U10 girls travelled to the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence, Bekan for the Connacht Blitz Connacht Ladies Gaelic Football. In the morning session, they joined 32 other teams, showcasing their enhanced skills and proudly debuting their new jerseys. Special thanks to Tower Hardware and CPAT for their generous sponsorship of the U8/U10 jerseys.
Last Wednesday the Swinford Killasser LGFA minor ladies met St Brigids Club in the Minor League Division 1 Shield semi-final. The Swinford ladies overcame strong opposition to win the game and advance to the shield final against Parke Keelogues Crimlin LGFA (fixture details to follow). The final score was St Brigids 1-6 v Swinford Killasser 1-18. Comhghairdeachas a chailiní agus beirígí bua.
Swinford Killasser LGFA is hosting a Céili Mór do Dhéagóirí (for teenagers aged 13-18) and Trad Disco on Saturday, August 3, from 6-9pm in the Cultural Centre Swinford as part of the Siamsa Sráide Festival this year. This event is aimed specifically for teenagers. The club is hosting the event as part of its efforts this year to support the use of and promote the use of Gaeilge within the club and caint agus craic is guaranteed and all are welcome. To prepare for the Céilí Mór the club, in conjunction with Swinford Comhaltas, is hosting free céili classes in Swinford NS, as part of the Siamsa Summer School, commencing July 29-August 2, from 6-7pm for all teenagers (13-18) to get in the mood for the big night.
The next Swinford Indoor Market will take place on Saturday, August 3, in Swinford Cultural Centre from 10.30am to 3pm. The August market coincides with Swinford’s Síamsa Sráide running from August 2 to 7. Vendors will display a variety of products, such as locally sourced produce, crafts and unique items. Cácaí Acla will be serving teas, coffees, and their delightful bakes indoors at the market, enhancing the overall experience.
The numbers drawn in the Swinford Community Lotto draw held on July 22 were: 2, 8, 17 and 26. €70 vouchers were won by The Gallagher Family, Cloonfinaun and Shane Julian, Midfield; €35 was won by Grace Doyle, Killasser, B Kilgallon, Dublin Road, Sorcha Moore, c/o Moore's and Linda Durkan, Bohola. The jackpot in the latest draw held on Monday, July 29, was €15,400.
Over the weekend of July 20th/21st Swinford Golf Club hosted competitions sponsored by Mellett's Emporium, with Sean Golden shining bright in the men's V Par event. Scoring a fantastic 6 up, Golden lead the field with Gerry Tierney in second. Gearoid Brady continued his fine form, taking third place. In the ladies' 9-Hole Stableford, Breege Spain and Margaret McNicholas were neck and neck, both securing impressive scores of 20, with Bernie Walsh taking third.
A huge thanks to all who helped in the clean-up of Kilconduff Cemetery on Saturday, July 20. Tons of weeds and spoil were collected and while there is more to do it was a great start. Hopefully the area can be maintained in this condition for the future. It has been proposed that the 3rd Saturday in July each year is reserved for this purpose.
The Swinford Athletic Club Autumn Series kicks off on Wednesday, August 7, with the Swinford 5k as part of Siamsa Sraide, all in aid of Kelly’s Walk 2 Rome.

It’s annual Swinford Comhaltas Pageant time again. The show this year is called ‘The Humours of Mayo’ (Meidhir Mhaigh Eó) and will take to the stage on Monday, August 5, at 8.30pm in the Cultural Centre. Admission is €10/€5.
This year the show is celebrating and exploring the beauty and history of Mayo and some of it's fascinating characters e.g. Céide Fields, Belmullet and its Memorial Garden (in memory of the 3,300 people (including over 400 from the Swinford/East Mayo area) who were helped escape the famine of 1879/80 by a quaker named Tuke), Maud Gonne and Yeats connection to Belmullet Erris, J M Synge's Playboy of the Western World is next and then on to Maureen Sweeney, the young woman who changed the course of World War 2. There will be a wander through Achill and also Cong (Quiet Man country). Lahardane and its Titanic story is featured and Captain Boycott gets a mention.
The show will conclude with a piece about Cumann na mBan and the exhibition taking place during the 40th Siamsa celebrations. The stories will be accompanied by the usual wonderful music, singing, dancing, drama and poetry. It will be a night to remember.
The annual ‘Time to Shine’ gala live talent show takes place in Julian’s of Midfield on Saturday evening, August 3. Doors open at 7pm and the show begins at 8pm. The calibre and variety of entries so far is just marvellous. The organisers are really looking forward to a brilliant gala show. If you’re not in you can’t win and the prizes for this show are well worth winning. In previous years everyone who entered had a really enjoyable and confidence building experience and this year will be no different. The death took place of Mary Callaghan, Raherolish, Kilmovee, on July 15, at her home surrounded by her family. Mary was predeceased by her husband Joe in 2010 and was a nurse by profession retired nursing staff of St. Columba’s Hospital, Sligo and Lindin House, Ballymote.
Mary is survived by her sons Peter and John Joe, daughter Claire Furey (Sligo), sisters Sr. Rosario, Joan and Noreen, grandchildren Shane, Kuba, Jack, Aaron and Énán, daughter-in-law Aga, son-in-law Paul, nephew, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Mary reposed in The Sharkey Funeral Home, Ballaghaderreen, on Saturday, July 20, with removal from her home on Sunday, July 21 to The Church of the Immaculate Conception, Kilmovee, arriving for Mass of the Resurrection at 2pm, followed by interment in Naomh Mobhí cemetery. May Mary rest in peace.
