Daniel Irwin dominates to claim Golfer of the Year at Swinford

Swinford Golf Club's Daniel Irwin has emphatically secured the Golfer of the Year title, becoming the latest junior member to claim this prestigious accolade. His triumph underscores a notable trend at Swinford—this is the second consecutive year that a junior has emerged victorious, with Tom Horkan having set the precedent last year.

Irwin's victory did not come by chance; his strategic prowess and consistent performance across the season culminated in a solid third place finish this past weekend, ensuring his lead was unassailable with one round still on the calendar. This achievement echoes the prowess of his brother James Irwin, a previous two-time winner, reinforcing the Irwin family's strong golfing lineage at Swinford.

Daniel’s journey to the top this season was highlighted by three key tournament wins, including a standout performance to clinch the Guinness Cup. These victories were not just a demonstration of skill but a declaration of his arrival as a formidable force within the club's competitive sphere.

The club's nurturing of young talent is evident, with juniors not just participating but profoundly impacting the leaderboard. This culture not only enhances the competitive spirit at Swinford but also promises a future rich with talent and ambition, as illustrated by the achievements of its young golfers.

As Swinford Golf Club celebrates Daniel Irwin's success, it also looks forward to the potential and promise that its junior golfers continue to show. With one round left in the season, the spotlight remains on Irwin, a young golfer whose name we may well see again as he continues to shape his promising golfing career.

The late Joe Moriarty

Joe will be sadly missed and remembered by his wife Ann, son Declan, daughters Fiona and Joan (Hayes), grandchildren Finn, Evan, Rebecca and Aoife, sons-in-law Brendan and Liam, extended family, neighbours and many friends. May Joe rest in peace.

The late Michael Nolan

The death took place of Michael Nolan, Clooncan, Ballinlough, on September 10, in the Galway Clinic. Michael was a native of Cloongoonagh, Tooreen, Ballyhaunis. He was a very popular man in the surrounding area in his youth and he was very involved in Tooreen Hurling Club as player, mentor, and committee member, and was always interested in the successes of the club up to the present day.

Michael was very gifted in many ways, he was very outgoing and this endeared him to many. He was a very talented and skillful handball player, and in later life took up golf, but his greatest was his love of traditional music and dance, his ability to compose and recite the many recitations which he composed over many years. He also had a great ability to engage in conversation with people of all ages and tune in at their level. He was master of ceremonies at Kilmovee Heritage nights for many years and he had a great ability to liven what would be a dreary night otherwise.

In recent days he has been described as a legend, a gentleman and a faithful servant. Michael was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary, parents Margaret and Michael and his brother Monsignor Terence, sister-in-law Helen Hayes and brother-in-law John Mullooly. Michael will be sadly missed by his sons John and Pat, daughters-in-law Evelyn O'Connor and Nicola Corless, grandchildren Hazel, Millie, Molly and Will, his sisters Maureen and Louise (Lawrence), sisters-in-law Anne Keane, Agnes Keane and Kay Mullooly, brothers-in-law Michael Lawrence and Tom Hayes, nephews and nieces, relatives as well as his neighbours and many friends.

Michael reposed in Gavin's Funeral Home, Knox Street, Ballyhaunis, on Friday, September 13, and his funeral arrived at St. Mary's Church, Gorthaganny, on Saturday, September 14, for Mass of the Resurrection at 11am followed by interment in Gorthaganny cemetery. May Michael rest in peace.
