‘Michael Collins -A Musical Drama’

Ballinrobe Musical Society will stage 'Michael Collins - A Musical Drama' in Ballinrobe Community School from Easter Sunday, April 5, to Saturday, April 11, 2026.

Written and scored by the late Bryan Flynn, the show traces Michael Collins' life from the 1916 Rising to his death at Béal na Bláth at the age of 31.

The society announced the show in Ballinrobe Racecourse at the 2026 Queen of the Lakes Festival.

Ballinrobe Agricultural Show launch

The official launch of the 2025 Ballinrobe Agricultural Show will take place on Friday, August 15, at 8.30pm in Flannery’s Bistro, Cornmarket. The Ballinrobe Agricultural Show will take place on Sunday, September 7, at Ballinrobe Racecourse.

Bowers Mixed Scramble competition

A captains mixed scramble golf competition sponsored by the Bowers Bar and Restaurant, was held in Ballinrobe Golf Club, on Thursday, July 24, and the results are as follows: 1st, Padraic Costello, Virgina Connolly, Denis Harrington, and Evan Moran; 2nd, Chris Mellotte, Phyllis Loftus, Gerard Hanley, and John Craddock; 3rd, Brenda Sheridan, Eileen Conlisk, Ian Brocklesby, and Martin Vahey.

Dementia Café

The Dementia Cafe continues on the first Tuesday of every month in the Tacú Family Resource Centre, with the next scheduled meeting to take place on Tuesday (today), August 5, from 11am to 12.30pm. There was no winner of the €10,700 lotto jackpot draw which was held on Wednesday, July 30. The numbers drawn were 1, 3, 12 and 24.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels are hot meals delivered to individuals at home (either on a temporary or long term basis). Meals on wheels can make your life easier. This service covers Ballinrobe and the Lake District area. Deliveries take place on Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s and consist of soup, main meal and dessert. People can also avail of two meals on Monday’s and Thursday’s.

Bingo takes place in the Kilmaine Community Centre every Sunday night, at 8pm.

Ballinrobe Town AFC Soccer Camp

Ballinrobe Town AFC will hold a Summer Soccer Development Camp for girls and boys aged 6 to 14, at The Green from Monday, August 11 to Friday, August 15 (10am to 2pm daily). The main coach for the camp will be Chris McGauley, who is the club’s Super League team manager and is also a UEFA licenced coach. Chris is also the current Mayo U18 League coach. The aims of the summer camp are to coach children game realistic exercises; skills development; age related soccer fundamentals; small sides games for fun. The cost per-child to take part in the camp is €70, with a €10 discount for siblings who also register for the camp. Music bingo and barbeque event postponed until September

Ballinrobe Town AFC’s music bingo, and summer barbeque originally scheduled for next Saturday, August 9, has been postponed. It is hoped that this event will take place in September.

Music bingo works in a similar fashion to regular bingo, except instead of numbers the host DJ plays one-minute clips of popular songs and participants tick the songs off on their bingo cards. The club held a very successful music bingo fundraiser on April 26 last. Further details will be available closer to the new date on the Ballinrobe Town AFC Facebook page.

Ballinrobe GAA Club lotto draw

There was no winner of the €28,000 lotto jackpot draw which was held on Monday, July 28. The numbers drawn were 19, 20, 29 and 36. The match three winner of €100 was Rory Galvin.

Ballinrobe Rugby Club

Congratulations to Mollie Ward and Aoife Conroy who played for the Connacht Rugby U16 girls’ development team in last week’s match against Munster in Tuam. Both Mollie and Aoife join an ever-growing list of Ballinrobe players who have represented various Connacht rugby teams.

Ballinrobe Rugby Club 50/50 draw

The club held its weekly 50/50 draw on Sunday, July 27, with Stephen Burke the winner of €465. Each ticket costs €2 or you can buy three tickets for €5. Tickets are also available in Martin Murphy’s Newsagent, Murphy’s Centra, McHugh’s Canteen, and M & B Dry Cleaners. Ballinrobe Rugby Club thank everyone who supports their weekly draw.

There was no winner of the €21,400 lotto jackpot draw which was held on Monday, July 28. The numbers drawn were 4, 5, 15 and 27. The €20 winners were Mick Fitzgerald, Michael Walsh, and Maurice Shine.

The Afternoon Tea event

The Professional Cookery Class, at Mayo Abbey Centre in conjunction with MSLETB, was delighted to present a cheque for €2,007 to the Irish Cancer Society. The funds were raised during an Afternoon Tea event held in support of Daffodil Day. Mary Murray, Irish Cancer Society Community Fundraiser Officer Midwest, acknowledged the local community support for the event and said  “The funds raised will make a real difference to the lives of cancer patients and their families throughout Mayo. Thank you!”.  The organisers thank all who contributed to the event, helping to raise these vital funds. 

Vegetable Growing in containers workshop

Mayo Abbey Centre are running a number of short workshops (1 – 1.5 hours) for anybody interested in growing vegetables in containers. Workshops will run in the organic garden with morning or evening sessions available. Contact the centre to express your interest on 094 93 65987.

Mayo Gaels lotto

The numbers drawn for the lotto which was held on Tuesday, July 29, were 1, 6, 25 and 36. There was no jackpot winner. Community Services

The community coffee morning is held every Thursday with a cuppa, a chat and some freshly baked scones. No booking necessary. The social dinner takes place every Tuesday but this must be booked in advance. The centre offers free computer/smartphone support for beginners, hot desk spaces with fibre broadband connections suitable for virtual meetings or interviews. It is a pick up and drop off point for Local Link Bus Service which goes to Castlebar daily Tuesday to Saturday and Claremorris every Thursday. The next card game will be held in Mayo Abbey Resource Centre on Thursday, August 21, at 9pm. All are welcome.

Islandeady

Heritage Group

Preparations are underway for Heritage Day in Islandeady which is being planned for Sunday, August 17, at 2pm in Jack’s Cottage. This special day of celebration has gained huge momentum over the years among the very young as well as the older members of the community and surrounding areas. Demonstrations of skills and customs of bygone days as well as a huge collection of memorabilia, including instruments and photographs will be on display. Present day craft makers will be displaying their skills and will be available to answer any questions people may have.
