Peter challenged himself to run 10km every day for 30 days and asked people to back him by donating to this important mental health charity. Also included are Paula and Peter MacArthur.

Erris Family and Community Support Centre

Well done to Peter McArthur Belmullet on his fantastic fundraiser in aid of North West STOP-Suicide Prevention. Peter challenged himself to run 10km every day for 30 days and asked people to back him by donating to this important mental health charity.

Peter and his family wanted to support NWSTOP to ensure on-going delivery of free counselling services in the area and to ensure no one has to struggle alone. A massive €3,490 was raised in total!

Rosaleen Lally, Erris FCSC chairperson accepted the donation on behalf of NWSTOP Board. Thank you sincerely to Peter, his parents and family for their support of local mental health services. If you need support, if you are feeling lost and need some where to turn, contact 081 844 4000 and ask to access counselling at the Erris branch.

Ballyglass RNLI

We were delighted to have a visit from James Conroy of JC Auto detailing recently before their monthly fundraising meeting. James recently ran a competition as a fundraiser for their service. He raffled off a car detail pack worth over €400 using the Irish lotto bonus ball to select the winner. His competition was sold out in no time at all. The lucky winner was Caroline Padden with her Audi Q3. The Audi went to James salon for some JC Auto detailing and came back like new. Ballyglass RNLI once again thank James most sincerely for his generosity to their service. If you ever thought of giving your car or van a good cleaning, get in touch with James and watch him transform your vehicle to come back like new. People always refer to James’ place as a salon because that’s what it is a salon for cars to be pampered in. Thanks again James and thanks to the hardworking volunteers who came along and gave of their time so selflessly.

Funding allocated

Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht Dara Calleary TD recently allocated €159,371 from his Department’s Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) for the provision of an 11km green trail at Corclough and for upgrade works on the Erris Loop Head. Minister Calleary thanked local representatives Cllr Sean Carey and Údarás representative Padraic Conroy for their assistance in these developments which will add to the tourism offering of the area.

Mayo Sports Partnership

Mayo County Council and Mayo Sports Partnership are developing a new Local Sports Plan and a number of public consultation workshops are held around the county encouraging more people in the county to get active with one such meeting held in the Civic Centre in Belmullet recently. There was a good turnout with one clear message emerging from the meeting, there is need for a indoor public swimming pool in Belmullet, run and funded by Mayo County Council like other towns in the county, back in 2024 1000 people signed a petition calling for an indoor swimming pool in Erris. All respect to the committee of the wonderful outdoor tidal pool, it’s not suitable for year around lessons and inaccessible for many. It’s encouraging to hear that work is on-going with the Broadhaven Bay Hotel to get the pool reopened as a community pool. Facilities for Erris athletics club was also voiced at the meeting.

Mayo Junior Pool

Another busy weekend recently of Mayo Junior Pool as the Junior Flyers continues in venues across Mayo. On Friday evening in McGraths Pool events in Erris they had 21 entries for Event 3 Mayo Junior Flyer with a great evening of fun and quality pool. Yet again Loman Langan proved unstoppable as he chalked up back to back wins. After 3 events, Loman had a clear lead in the rankings, with 2 wins and also a runner up title.

However 10 year old Darragh Gaughan finishing runner-up in McGraths and winner of Mayo Junior Ranking event in the Castle Cue Club Castlebar is hot on his heels. Well done Darragh and also to runner-up in Castlebar, Adam Maughan.

Congrats also to Ruairi Walsh, shield winner and Colin Tuohy shield runner up. There was no winner of the Break & Dish competition in either venue but in a novel twist Eoghan McGrath introduced some additions to his B&D comp that proved very popular.

It was brilliant to see a lot of new faces with seven junior girls playing McGraths and newcomers Aoibhéann and Pippa Barrett and the amazing 6 year old Emily Gaughan showing there will be brilliant competitors for the future.

Full results; McGraths – winner Loman Langan, runner-up Darragh Gaughan, semi-final Sean Reilly and Keelan Barrett.

Castle Cue Club winner Darragh Gaughan (Erris), runner-up Adam Maughan (Castlebar); semi-final Francis Tolan (Barnacarroll) and Sean Coyle (Erris), shield winner Ruairi Walsh (Erris) and runner-up Colin Tuohy (Balla).
