Local Notes: Kiltimagh's Mary elected to national board of Foróige

Local Notes: Kiltimagh's Mary elected to national board of Foróige

Mary G Duffy has been elected to the national board of directors of Foróige.

Congratulations to Mary G Duffy, Ballinamore, Kiltimagh, a volunteer with Mayo Foróige for many years, who has been elected on to the bational board of directors with her colleague Sharon Reilly.

It was a great day for Mayo with two elected to the board, plus two from Galway, and one each from Cavan and Cork. Mayo has one of the largest number of clubs in Ireland, 60 plus, with Galway and Cork next, but it was delegates from all over Ireland who voted them on to the national board.

Mary is currently a designated club leader at Mayo Gaels in Mayo Abbey Foróige Club; her name was put forward and she was elected in Mayo for the national council, after which there was another election in Dublin for the board of directors.

Mary was a member of Macra na Tuatha in her youth before it became Foróige in the 1980s and has been a volunteer leader with Mayo Foróige for the past 22 years, as a leader in her community of Kiltimagh for 18 years, and has held various positions on Mayo District Council committees during this period.

In 2023, and in consultation with the Foróige Youth Officer, she helped to establish a senior leadership club in Claremorris as there was no club in the town. This was a very proud moment as she saw a need to retain the 15 to 18-year-old members in Foróige, and she was delighted that its members were part of the 50 young people from Mayo who completed Module 2 of the Leadership for Life Programme in Achill recently.

Mary is very passionate about the Leadership Programme and has delivered it in University College Maynooth for the past 13 years. She was honoured in 2014 to be selected to go on the cross border North-South initiative to Stranmillis College, Belfast to deliver the programme.

Through her involvement with Foróige, she represented Mayo Foróige in Calcutta in 2011 with the Hope Foundation, working for two weeks with the poor and vulnerable children - an experience she says she will never forget.

Mary is a huge advocate for young people's involvement in community projects and as a leader has attended numerous citizenships events over the years. She feels she is also benefiting and learning new skills as well as supporting young people in a positive way.

Mary is wished well in her new role and is sure to keep on looking after the interests of all our young people who are indeed lucky to have her as a role model.

A big welcome for Cllr Forkan

With over a 60% turnout in Kiltimagh in the Mayo County Council election for the Swinford Electoral Area the following are the results of the tallies: Adrian Forkan (Fianna Fáil) 488, John Caulfield (Fianna Fáil) 100, Neil Cruise (Fine Gael) 83, Gerry Murray (Sinn Féin) 53, Horan (Aontú) 42, John Sheehan (Sinn Féin) 41, Antoinette Peyton (Fine Gael) 31, Marion Gordon (The Irish People) 14,Sean Forkin (Non-Party) 11.

After the ups and downs in the counts which followed, especially for two of the candidates, Kiltimagh’s Adrian Forkan was elected on the fifth and final count without reaching the quota.

Having only been been co-opted on to Mayo County Council when Swinford’s Cllr Michael Smyth retired from politics last year, this was a great result for Adrian Forkan who got support right across the party divide in Kiltimagh and his home place Kinaffe. In his address when he arrived back in Kiltimagh last Wednesday evening, he acknowledged that and thanked everyone who voted for him and promised to do all he can for the benefit of the area in the next five years.

No doubt Adrian will give it his all, as he did when he played football with the local GAA Club over the years. He won various trophies/medals and had the honour of playing in the All-Ireland Junior Football Final in Croke Park in 2010 when that match went to extra time and Kiltimagh eventually lost narrowly. He also won an All-Ireland medal with the Mayo Over-40s team.

He is wished all the best by his supporters and friends all around the region over the next five years.
