Local Notes: Kilmurry U10 Draughts team are All Ireland champions.

Kilmurry U10 draughts team were crowned All-Ireland Champions when they defeated Croagh-Kilfinny Limerick in the semi-final and Bawn-Latton in the final in Kilkenny recently. Pictured with their coaches on the return home to the Kilmurry Sports Centre where a huge crowd turned out to greet the newly crowned champions from left Michael Heffernan, Teresa Callaghan, Eimear Heffernan, Erin Ruane, Thomas Ruane, Michael O’Boyle, Daniel Loftus, Tiernan Lynn, John O’Boyle, Hilda Lynn and Mairead O’Malley.

Annual Mass in Ballycastle Cemetery will be held on Sunday, August 3, at 12 noon weather permitting.

Belderrig Bronzeman

This event will take place on Saturday, August 2. The main Bronzeman race for men and women is a 100m swim followed by a 4km cycle and 4km run. Couch to 3k

Ballycastle Athletic Club Couch to 3k walk to jog programme takes place at Ballycastle GAA pitch on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm for another 5 weeks. It is free to take part and is suitable for all ages and abilities. Children must be accompanied by an adult/guardian. All are welcome.

Congratulations to the Ardmoy U16s who won the U16 North Mayo B final against a gallant Naomh Padraig Team, with a final score of Ardmoy 3-7 Naomh Padraig 0-12. Well done to all the lads and management.

Knock Novena

The National Novena at Knock takes place at Knock Shrine from August 13 –21. The Novena includes daily ceremonies at 3pm and 8pm, featuring guest speakers, musical accompaniment and concludes with a candlelight procession.

The Bofield CCE Seisiun will continue on Thursday evenings at 8.30pm to Thursday, August 21, in the Grand National Hotel in Ballina with traditional Irish music, song, dance and storytelling sessions. It features musicians from Bofield CCÉ, with musicians, singers, storytellers and dancers from across the Moy Valley and further afield. Annual trip to Knock Shrine

The annual trip to Knock Shrine for Killala, Lacken and Cooneal parishes will take place on August 6. They will enjoy lunch at The Knock House Hotel, have some free time and Fr Michael PP will celebrate Mass at 3.15pm at the Apparition Chapel. The bus will depart Knock at 5pm. The cost of the trip is €30 per person and this includes the bus and lunch. Leave your name and money into your local church or Killala PO or contact Aine on 087 1238497.

Tea Morning in The Failte Rooms

Lacken Community Care express their heartfelt thanks to those who supported the recent Tea Morning and raffle in the Failte Rooms, Lacken. The fundraising event was held after 10am Mass to raise money to pay for the bus for the annual trip to Knock Shrine. It was a lovely morning and a total of €345 was raised.  

Community Garden

The Community Garden is in full bloom this Summer season and is a beautiful, peaceful space to spend some time in the company of others. The gardening group continues to meet on Monday and Thursday at 10am. New gardeners are always welcome. 

Lacken Sensory Garden

The committee are delighted to have finally purchased the pump for the pond at The Sensory Garden at Lacken Strand. They extend thanks to Britt and Stephen at Paint and Sip for offering €300 from their recent Paint and Sip event in Bessies Bar and all are looking forward to seeing the water cascading down the pond rocks creating another beautiful feature in Lacken Sensory Garden.

Walking Club National Walking Day 2025

The walking group in Lacken are delighted to have been invited by Mayo Sports Partnership to host an event on September 25 to celebrate National Walking Day. The Activator Pole walking group in Lacken is an amazing success story and this invitation from Mayo Sports Partnership recognises the commitment and dedication of the walkers in Lacken and their friends from surrounding parishes have shown to this new initiative. The walking group meet on Tuesday mornings at 10am. New members are always welcome. “It’s your road and yours alone. Others may walk with you, but no one can walk it for you” – Rumi.
