The Jesus and Mary Secondary School Leaving Cert Class of 2025 at their school graduation.

Leaving Certificate Student of the Year

Jesus and Mary Secondary School announced the 2025 Leaving Cert Student of the Year, an award that recognises the individual(s) who truly reflect the values at the heart of the school. Students are nominated and voted for based on four key areas; academic achievement, extra-curricular involvement, attitude and behaviour and attendance. The selected nominees were Conor Lang, Cormac O’Malley, Darragh Toolan, Jennifer Blakney, Amy Egan, Erin McCormack, Saoirse Corcoran and Roisin Feeney. The school extended congratulations to all the students who were nominated –‘Your hard work, dedication, and positive impact have not gone unnoticed’. The 2025 Leaving Certificate Student of the Year went to Saoirse Corcoran.

Significant Investment for Enniscrone Pier

‘Enniscrone Pier has been allocated €185,625 in government funding, with matched funding from Sligo County Council bringing the total investment to €247,500’ said Councillor Joe Queenan recently.

This funding will support much-needed repairs at the pier and contribute to the installation of a new pontoon. The pontoon will be a vital asset as Enniscrone prepares for a predicted increase in tourism, particularly from visitors interested in diving at the sunken ship in Killlala Bay.

This project has been a long time in the making, and Joe Queenan expressed his thanks to the Enniscrone and District Community Council and the Pier Committee for their dedicated and tireless work in bringing it to this point. ‘Gratitude is also due to Val Baynes of Sligo County Council and Eamon Scanlon, whose efforts in lobbying for this funding on behalf of the area were instrumental. Enniscrone received the largest allocation of this funding in the county, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact of this investment in the months and years ahead’, concluded Councillor Queenan.

‘Where do we all belong?’

West Sligo Family Resource Centre are delighted to be supporting the new project ‘Where do we all belong’, which is a socially-engaged visual art project addressing loneliness in Co Sligo. Depictions of rural life in art often focus on the romantic, leaving the subject of loneliness under examined.

In 2023 the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre found that Ireland has the highest levels of loneliness in Europe with over 20% of respondents reporting feeling lonely most or all of the time compared to a 13% average across the EU.

The idea, which was conceived and directed by Ronan Dillon, aims to educate, entertain and inspire meaningful connection through visual art, ultimately promoting greater social inclusion. Ronan was joined by Noel Feeney, Abhainn Studio, Enniscrone, and Peter Martin, Sligo, who will create a documentary video. The research was carried out from May 19 to May 23, with a mobile research van travelling across rural Sligo where they gathered anonymous surveys, personal reflections and anecdotes from local residents. Insights gathered during this phase will inform a visual art exhibition to be held later this year at Abhainn Studio, Enniscrone, where the documentary video will be premiered.

Ava Hallinan shortlisted for FAI Player of the Year Award

Ava Hallinan, a member of the Sligo Rovers Academy, and Kilglass Enniscrone Utd FC who is a 2nd year student at Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone, is one of three soccer players to be shortlisted for the FAI’s U15 Schoolgirls International Player of the Year, which will be announced on June 6.

Ava captained the Sligo/Leitrim team to last year’s national Gaynor Cup title. She made her senior debut for Sligo Rovers in February this year, aged 14, when she played a pre-season friendly against Athlone Town. She was one of two players that played the full 70 minutes in each match of the Bob Docherty Cup tournament, hosted by the Scottish Football Association which included England, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland, with the Irish U15 team. Ava was named Player of the Match against Scotland. She has also been capped at U16 level and she was in Finland last week to participate in the FAI U16s Development Squad.

Phase 11 completed

Kilglass Enniscrone Utd FC are delighted that Phase 11 of their grounds upgrade was completed last week with the installation of their new state of the art LED floodlights. This now means that the club can host evening games going forward and also gives them more capacity to train. The floodlight installation followed Phase 1, which was the conversion of the old grass pitch to all weather astro.

The club extend thanks to all the volunteers who helped them with the project, through fundraising, grant applications and lots of other tasks undertaken; to the sponsors, without whose help they would never get these projects off the ground. The floodlights were installed by Electric Skyline and the club thanks Darren, Fergal, Jason and Dec for their expertise and commitment to doing a top job. Thank you was also extended to Sean Egan from Sean Egan Electrical who did all the electrical connections and as always was a massive help to the club, whether carrying out works or advising them on the best approach; to OMD for their excellent work and finally to Brendan Byron for his assistance in the procurement stage of the project.

The club hope that all the players and community enjoy using the fantastic facilities for many years to come.
