Local notes: Jarlath Burns is guest of Moy Davitts

The Moy Davitts LGFA team who have reached the final of the County U16 'B' Championship on account of their win away to Aghamore last Friday evening.
There’s great excitement building around the official 50th anniversary celebrations of Moy Davitts GAA Club, particularly since confirmation last week that Jarlath Burns, President of the GAA, will attend the upcoming dinner dance as special guest.
Burns took up his role in February this year and as a footballer, debuted with the Armagh senior team in 1987 and captained the Orchard County to an Ulster title in 1999. A fluent Irish speaker, his son Jarly Óg was a member of this year’s All-Ireland winning Armagh team.
The Moy Davitts 50th Anniversary dinner dance is taking place at the Great National Hotel in Ballina on Saturday, November 24.
Tickets are available by contacting Annette at 087-6781500 but there is also going to be a special sale night at the clubhouse in Sraith Garbh on October 11 at 8pm. Don’t miss out.
The Foxford Bridge Club has resumed for the winter. It meets in the Social Services Centre every Wednesday night from 6 to 9pm and will continue until next May.
Everyone is very welcome regardless of whether a beginner or not.
If you want to join the club or if you want to learn to play Bridge, please contact Richard at 085-1095471 or email Foxfordbridgesec@gmail.com.
The end of the season is fast approaching but conditions on the River Moy have been improving for fishermen in recent weeks, with 63 slamon reported caught for the week ending Sunday, September 15 – and river levels dropping since then.
There have also been confirmed reports of salmon moving up through the system which is also a positive. It’s hoped anglers will make the most of the improved conditions and enjoy the final week of fishing this season.
A large crowd is expected in Foxford next Sunday afternoon as Moy Davitts enjoy home advantage for their clash with Hollymount-Carramore in the quarter-finals of the Egan Jewellers Mayo Intermediate Football Championship. They will enter the game as warm favourites, not only on account of their unbeaten run through the group phase but because they got the better of the same opposition at the exact same stage of last year’s competition. That was something of a one-sided affair as Moy Davitts triumphed by 4-14 to 1-10, and with former Mayo attacker Darren Coen currently unavailable to the South Mayo outfit because of injury, the home side will be looking to capitalise on every advantage while the visitors will be intent on revenge.
The game in Sraith Garbh will throw-in at 1pm.
Congratulations to Fr Padraig Costello on his win in last week’s Moy Davitts GAA 50-50 draw. An annual season ticket holder, Fr Padraig won a jackpot of €536.

A number of S&F United teams were in Connacht Cup action over the course of the past week.
The U14 girls were at home to fellow Mayo outfit Kilmurry in the opening round and were on the end of a 5-1 defeat. It should be pointed out however, that the opposition are a couple of divisions higher (Premier Division) than S&F for whom Kasia Berkowski scored their only goal. The United girls gave it their all and never stopped challenging, chasing and fighting for the game from the first whistle to the last.
In the Connacht U16 Cup, S&F United suffered a 3-0 defeat to Castlebar Celtic, again a team who are some three divisions above them. It was, however, a much tighter contest than the scoreline would have you believe but as is sometimes the case with the beautiful game, the full-time result doesn't always truly reflect the game that took place, with the United boys giving the Hoops a real good game.
In the Connacht U12 Cup, S&F United’s boys team travelled to Gurteen Celtic and despite holding the lead for the majority of play, a late brace of goals saw them fall to a 3-2 defeat. United’s goals were scored by Eoghan Jordan and Cathal Timlin.
It was a trip to Sligo too, for the U12 girls as they were in Connacht Cup first round action against St John’s. They gave a great account of themselves but slipped to a 2-0 defeat.
Well done to Chris Ruddy, Ballina Road, Foxford, who was the winner of the €100 jackpot prize in the S&F United 50-50 weekly draw. Tickets are available in local outlets and online at Smart Lotto while season tickets are also available from all committee members, where you can enter 52 draws for €50.
The Foxford Traditional Singing and Poetry Group recommences in Guiry’s Bar this coming Thursday, September 26 at 8.30pm. All are welcome.
Foxford Parish Pastoral Council are inviting parents of children who were baptised in 2021 to bring their child to St Michael’s Church on Sunday, October 13 for the annual blessing of children – a short prayer service to which other family members will also be most welcome. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Admiral Brown Hall.
The countdown is on to Foxford Salmon Anglers’ final fishing competition of the season which will be the Waterkeepers Trophy, to be held next Saturday, September 28. Last year’s competition was won by Christian Hoffman, so if you would like to see your name on the trophy then come along and have a go.
Foxford Foróige is holding a registration night for the coming year on Friday next, September 27, at Admiral Brown Hall between 7 and 8pm. The club fees are €100 for the first family member and €90 for subsequent family members while Foróige Ireland membership is €30 for the first family member and €50 for family membership. It’s possible to pay in split payments, this September and in February ’25.
Also, the group requires leaders to help run this fun-filled and safe club for the young teenage members so if you would like to know more, get in touch via its social media channels.
The U10 footballers of Moy Davitts had good reason to celebrate when crowned champions at the Jackie McLoughlin Blitz hosted by Knockmore GAA. Well done to the players, management and coaching team.
The under-16 footballers of Moy Davitts LGFA have a county final to look forward to after they overcame Aghamore in last Friday’s semi-final of the Mayo LGFA U16 ‘B’ championship. They beat their East Mayo opponents rather comfortably, 3-13 to 0-8, in what was a fine team performance.
Renowned Donegal fiddle player Bríd Harper is the latest artist to have been added to the line-up of the 10th annual Foxford Traditional Weekend, which is taking place in the town from October 16 to 20. From Castlefinn in the east of the county, Bríd will also be hosting a workshop for which only a small number of tickets are available. Visit www.foxfordtraditionalweekend.com.
There are just under four weeks until the festival of music, song and dance, with the organisers having announced some top class talent who will be performing. There’s the famed Hernon Family and their fellow Galwegian Don Stiffe, current senior All-Ireland champions, Hannah Lyons (harp) and Ryan Sheridan (accordion), while returning to the festival this year is another exceptional harpist and composer, Michael Rooney, and his flautist wife June McCormack who not alone will be performing but teaching at the workshops also.
