Local Notes: Incredible weekend for Stokane NS's 'Fossil Finders' team.

Stokane NS's 'Fossil Finders' team win the First Lego League Trophy for their innovation project at the national final which was held in Dublin.

Incredible weekend for Stokane NS’s ‘Fossil Finders’ team

Stokane National School’s ‘Fossil Finders’ team had an incredible weekend at the First Lego League National final which was held in Dublin, bringing home a trophy for their outstanding work.

The first Lego League is a Stem based competition that combines Lego robotics, research, project presentation, teamwork and plenty of fun. This year’s theme ‘Unearthed’, challenged teams to explore problems faced by archaeologists.

The Fossil Finders rose to the challenge with creativity and enthusiasm. They designed and coded their very own robot, Digbot 3000, to compete in the robot games. Their innovation project focussed on real-world archaeological challenges, supported by research that included local site visits and discussions with experts in archaeology and engineering.

The team went above and beyond - dressing the part and even creating an archaeology-themed cake for their presentation. All their dedication and hard work paid off when they were awarded the First Lego League Trophy for their Innovation Project. A fantastic achievement and a proud moment for the whole school community.

Now, there is a €65,000 payment to Sligo County Council for their match funding requirement for Phase 2. This will be used to help build Phase 2. This is a huge milestone and something the whole community should be proud of.

The hub is doing really well, but the committee need to rebuild the fundraising buffer in order to continue developing the space and supporting activities in the community. So, this quiz night is about getting people together for a good night out while helping the hub continue to grow. Get your team together, expect tough questions from Billy with plenty of laughs along the way.
