Local Notes: Erris school's Super Swim raises funds for RNLI

Students, teachers and members of the parents' association of Inver National School presenting a fundraising cheque for €5,153 to members of Ballyglass RNLI, the proceeds of a recent swim event in Belmullet Tidal Pool.

The Parents' Association of Inver NS organised a Super Swim of 10K for Ballyglass Lifeboat in Belmullet Tidal Pool recently. Ten kilometres is the distance from the Ballyglass Lifeboat Station to the Inshore RNLI Station in Belmullet, while one kilometre equates to 47 lengths of the tidal pool, so 10K was a total of 470 lengths of the tidal pool.

Many current and past pupils of Inver NS attend swimming lessons and the water safety courses at Belmullet Tidal Pool. Michelle Healy is the Head Swimming Instructor with Belmullet Tidal Pool/Swimming Club and she currently holds the position of the Local Water Safety Officer with the RNLI.

Michelle and her team at the tidal pool do amazing work providing swimming lessons for all ages. They also provide the Water Safety Ireland courses for all levels from basic water safety up to the suvival and rescue stages. Michelle has brought a lot of the children from Inver on a swimming journey, which starts with splashing in the baby pool right up to completing the annual one mile and half-mile swims each summer.

Within her role with the RNLI, she promotes and educates on all aspects of water safety. Michelle recently did a water safety talk with the Inver Foróige group and also attended the school recently.

As a token of appreciation for all the work Michelle does for water safety in in the area, the parents' association of Inver NS organised a sponsored swim for Ballyglass RNLI. On the day the children of Inver school past and present actually completed over 30km. This is a phenomenal achievement and all are so proud of all our super swimmers. A total of €5,153 was raised for Ballyglass RNLI. An outstanding amount for a small group to raise in a short time.

The Inver NS community would like to thank everyone for their support and contributions to this wonderful service we have on our doorstep.

Rásaí Bhéal an Mhuirthead

Tullaghan Bay Rowing Club and Blacksod Bay Rowing Club come together to host Rásaí Bhéal an Mhuirthead, which took place on Sunday, June 7th.

The regatta, which forms part of the National Currach League, attracted rowing clubs and competitors from all over Ireland, making it a fantastic occasion for the Erris area. The event provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase not only the talent within the local rowing community, but also the outstanding beauty of the region. It certainly was a wonderful event and thanks to the sponsors. There was also wonderful traditional music with Sean and Martin Harrington and others on the quayside.

Tullaghan Bay Rowing Club

Thank you to Shraigh NS for inviting Tullaghan Bay Rowing Club to take part in their Active School Week recently. It was fantastic to spend time with the students, teaching them rowing techniques, leading fun warm-ups, group activities, and challenges. There was plenty of enthusiasm, lots of laughs, and a great morning had by all. The club may even have spotted a few future rowers in the making!

Thanks again to everyone at Shraigh NS for the warm welcome and for making it such an enjoyable experience. Also a big shout out to Junior Rowers Sean Gallagher, Sofia Gaughan, Mia Carey, and Caoimhe McDonnell for their help and coaching experience - it's great to see our youth looking to progress into coaching roles.

Remembering John

On Saturday, June 6, the family of the late John Barrett, Seaside and Glencastle, and others completed a Lawnmower Walk raising money for the Mayo Roscommon Hospice.

The family would like to thank the Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council Cllr Sean Carey for such kind words at the start of the walk. Takemeshnap did a great job with the video and pictures of the walk. Huge praise goes to the Order of Malta, Coast Guard, the Belmullet branch of Mayo County Council and the Belmullet Gardaí for keeping everything safe and under control. Massive thanks to TJ Lennon who helped get this off the ground; Linda Conway and staff in the Corner House Bar for wonderful hospitality at the half way point; James Lavelle and staff in the Eagle Bar in Corclough for hosting the participants after the walk and providing a great night; Sizzlers in Bangor and the Builin Blasta for great grub after a long walk; Kay and Packie for the great music and assistance with the raffle; Centra, Sean Barrett and Blanco Nino for all the refreshments during the walk; all who sold tickets for the raffle and all who did the bucket collections and came to celebrate the occasion; and to Kathy in the Hospice, your help and support was invaluable.

A big thank you to all of the family, friends, neighbours and the community in Glencastle and John’s former council workmates who joined everyone on the day for the walk. There is no final tally of the money raised yet as there are still donations coming in but the walk has raised in excess of €12,000 so far and a final tally is due shortly. The whole day exceeded all expectations.
