Local Notes: Enniscrone entry qualifies for regional finals of Junk Kouture

Kate Hannan, a transition year student from Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone, who with her friend Caoimhe Hughes, has qualified for the regional finals of Junk Kouture with their creation 'Mother Demented'.
Congratulations to the talented transition year students Caoimhe Hughes and Kate Hannon, Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone, who are through to the regional final of Junk Kouture with their creation 'Mother Demented'. Their entry which was made out of coal bags and the netting around wood was chosen out of 1600 entries.
Enniscrone Kilglass Gaelic 4Mothers&Others are back for their 7th season. Before they took their break their numbers were growing each week. They hope to get all the ladies back training on Monday, February 26, at 8pm. Training will start back in the indoor astro Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA pitch. They are looking for new members to join their amazing group of ladies. If you are interested why not come along on the night. No previous experience is needed, you must be over 25 years old, it is suitable for all fitness levels and it is a great way to meet new people, have some fun and get fit. Windmill Players will present ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’ by Brian Friel in Dromore West Community Centre from Thursday, February 29 to Sunday, March 3.
The Eoghan Rua Ladies annual dinner dance to celebrate the achievements of 2023 will take place on March 16, so dust off the shoes, and get looking for a dress! This will be a special night and what better thjan a bank holiday weekend. The awards are from U14 up. There will be a special guest on the night and more details will follows.
Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone transition year students will present Aladdin and The Lampon February 28 and 29 in the Jesus and Mary School Hall. Doors open at 7pm and admission is €5.
Huge congratulations to the sixth class from Stokane NS who brought home a trophy from the first Lego League Challenge Regional Tournament 2024 for their innovation project and they are now through to the All Ireland final in Dublin in March.
Councillor Joe Queenan has welcomed €500,000 in funding to Enniscrone which was announced on Friday, February 9. It will go towards a pedestrian crossing on Cliff Road for the pupils and teachers of Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone and the footpaths of Cliff Road will be improved as well. The funding will also cover widening and upgrading the footpath from the Bridge to the Diamond Coast Hotel.
West Sligo Athletics Club are excited to share their 0-5km eight week plan, which commenced last week and will continue until Saturday, April 6. There are 3 x 30 minute sessions per week and they can be done as a group but this is not compulsory. The group sessions are Monday evenings at 7pm, Thursday evenings at 8pm. The objective is to bring non-running adults to the point where they can do the 5km Club Runs/Park Runs. This is a relaxed environment, and the club are more concerned about enjoyment and a path to sustained exercise, rather than performance. The cost is €30 (which will go to West Sligo AC). If you are interested email westsligoac@gmail.com The club will provide advice on what to wear, gear, Park Runs, answer any questions, weekly plan via WhatsApp – you are free to work by yourself, and two sessions per week where you are free to join a group. The aim is to do a 5k on Saturday, April 6 and hopefully regularly after that.
West Sligo AC will be doing the very popular 5km Summer Series again this year, where they have runs each week in various locations across the catchment area – Easkey, Castleconnor, Stokane, Pullaheeney, Rathlee, Enniscrone, Kilglass, Dromore West etc.
Community Day will be held on Saturday, March 16, at 3pm, at Kilglass Community Centre, when they will have the first stage of the new digital hub and community centre opening.
The official opening will be later in the Spring but the committee are inviting the entire community, the generous sponsors, and supporters to come and experience the new centre at a fun and informal community day on Saturday, March 16. Special guest on the day is the talented Tommy Marren from Mid West Radio. This is an opportunity for the community to come together to see and share how the new centre and digital hub can serve the locality and celebrate how far this project has come in the three years since the initial fundraising online St Patrick’s Day concert.
The day will include; fun and games for children, face painting, Ireland’s Six Nations game on the big screen, complimentary party food, information and tours of the building and the services available, speech by Tommy at 3.30pm, music and details of new events and clubs.
A day of retreat and reflection will be held at Holy Hill Hermitage, Skreen, on Saturday, February 24, from 10.30am to 4pm. The programme for the day is: 10.30am coffee, 11am welcome and introduction by Sr Pat; 11.15am Talk ‘The Path of Heaven’, Teresa of Abvila’s teaching on Our Father by Gillian; 12 noon adoration/contemplation; 12.30pm Mass/Eucharistic Service; 1.30pm Soup/lunch provided (donations welcome); 2.30pm Talk ‘Is there a pathway to peace’. Searching for signs of hope in the midst of conflict and chaos’ by Tomas Maher; 3.20pm a ticke of sharing/closing prayer.

Western Gaels Hurling and Camogie Club have embarked on its own adventure to develop the first hurling and camogie home grounds in Co Sligo, and they are giving you an incredible opportunity to pack your bags and travel anywhere in the world all for €25 per ticket as a fundraiser. They are limiting the number of tickets to 7500 so buy early to avoid disappointment. First prize is €8000 travel voucher and €5000 spending money; 2nd €5000 travel voucher and €3000 spending money; 3rd €3000 travel voucher and €1000 spending money and 4th through to 6th prize €1000 cash.
The draw will take place on March 16 and if the tickets are all so before the specified date, they will hold the draw sooner, so keep an eye out for updates.

The Buggy Buddies programme with Bernie Finley, in conjunction with Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership, meet on Wednesday mornings at 9.45am for a walk at 10am. The cost is €2 per session and the group meet at the Enniscrone Family Resource Centre. There will be indoor activities in the centre if conditions are too wet. All are welcome to come and join for a walk, a cuppa and chat.

The death took place of Martin Reape, Carranurlor, Enniscrone, peacefully at the North West Hospice, surrounded by his loving family. He is predeceased by his wife Ann and his parents Tony and Kate. He was dear father of Anthony, Paul, Martin and Stephen and will also be sadly missed by his grandchildren Ciara, Katie, Dylan and Nathan, daughters-in-law Carmel and Patricia, brother John and sister Mary Gillen, brother-in-law Vincent, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Martin reposed at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina, on Saturday evening, February 10, from 5pm with removal at 6.30pm arriving at St Joseph’s Church, Castleconnor at 7pm. Requiem Mass was held on Sunday morning at 11am with the funeral proceeding to St Patrick’s Cemetery, Kilglass for burial. May he rest in peace.
