Local Notes: Delight in Carra Country as local councillors are returned

Cllr Al McDonnell celebrates with family and friends after he was elected to Mayo County Council. Picture: Michael McLaughlin
Congratulations to local Mayo councillors, Al McDonnell, Fianna Fáil and Cyril Burke, Fine Gael, both of whom have been returned once again to serve on Mayo County Council for the next five years.
Both men polled really strongly with Cllr McDonnell topping the poll in ten booths around the region and achieving a first preference total of 1,548. Cllr Burke also polled impressively, achieving a first preference total of 1,309 votes.
The importance of rural communities in supporting rural candidates cannot be over-emphasised as urban centres continue to grow and expand often claiming a lion’s share of finance, infrastructure and development funding. Rural decline, loss of population, the vast rural public roads network, restricted planning etc. can only be compensated for by electing hard-working local councillors who understand and care about the issues and who will represent the interests of small isolated rural communities to the best of their ability.
