Local Notes: Claremorris school celebrates history sporting season

Players and coaches from Gaelscoil Uileog de Búrca are pictured with the trophies they won during a historic year of sporting success for the school.

There was plenty to celebrate at Gaelscoil Uileog de Búrca as the school wrapped up an extraordinary term of sporting achievement, with its boys’ and girls’ football, hurling and camogie teams winning county titles at the Cumann na mBunscol interschool competitions.

Sport holds a special place in daily life at the Gaelscoil, and in recent weeks, pupils displayed outstanding skill, teamwork and determination across all codes. Under the expert coaching of John and Jack Comer, and sixth-class teacher múinteoir Ciarán Ó Coigligh, the boys’ football team enjoyed a standout campaign that culminated in victory at the County Final in MacHale Park, an unforgettable moment as they were crowned county champions.

The girls weren’t far behind. They took top honours in the Mini 7s football competition, ensuring two county trophies were added to the school’s cabinet for football alone.

But the success didn’t end there. With múinteoir Breda Kean at the helm, both hurling and camogie teams trained with dedication and enthusiasm, making full use of the school’s state-of-the-art astro pitch. Their hard work paid off in style as both the boys’ hurling and girls’ camogie teams reached and won their respective Cumann na mBunscol county finals, bringing the school’s total to four county titles in one season.

As the summer holidays approached, the school community was in celebratory mood. The achievements were a source of huge pride, not only for staff and pupils, but also for local clubs including Claremorris GAA, Ballyhaunis GAA, Davitts GAA, Aghamore GAA, Tooreen GAA, and The Neale GAA, all of whom were represented with distinction.

Principal Máire Uí Dhinnéide paid tribute to all involved, with particular thanks to the coaching team of John and Jack Comer, múinteoirí Ciarán and Breda, and all who supported the players along the way. Gratitude was also extended to Cumann na mBunscol organisers, and to the many schools who took part in what remains a much-anticipated highlight of the primary school sporting calendar.

FoodCloud programme a huge success

Claremorris Family Resource Centre has shared new figures outlining the scale and success of its involvement in the national FoodCloud programme, which helps to redistribute surplus food from supermarkets to community organisations.

Since beginning the initiative, the centre has carried out a total of 933 food collections, resulting in the redistribution of more than 41,469 kilograms of food that would otherwise have gone to waste. This food has been redirected to individuals and families in the local area, equating to an estimated 101,781 meals provided to the community.

The programme, which partners with major retailers including Tesco Ireland, Lidl Ireland and Aldi Ireland, plays a central role in the centre’s work to support households experiencing food insecurity. The centre has acknowledged the critical role of its dedicated team of volunteers, who give their time each week to collect, sort and distribute the donated food items. Their contribution ensures that the food reaches those who need it most in a timely and respectful manner.

In addition to the social and community benefits, the environmental impact of the scheme has also been substantial. By redirecting food away from landfill, the Claremorris centre’s activities through FoodCloud have resulted in a reduction of approximately 126,302 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions, contributing to the broader effort to tackle climate change at a local level.

The ongoing partnership with FoodCloud continues to be a key aspect of Claremorris Family Resource Centre’s mission to provide practical supports to those facing economic challenges. In recent months, with rising living costs placing further pressure on many households, the importance of such services has become even more apparent.

The centre has expressed its appreciation for the continued support of its retail partners and volunteers, and plans to build on the success of the programme in the months ahead. The figures released this week are a testament to what can be achieved when community organisations, businesses and volunteers work together with a shared purpose.

For more information about Claremorris Family Resource Centre’s services or to learn how to get involved as a volunteer, members of the public are encouraged to contact the centre directly.

James Preston returns as Lions Club president

The Claremorris and District Lions Club has welcomed back a familiar face, as James Preston begins his third term as club president. Speaking at his recent appointment, James expressed his gratitude and sense of purpose in returning to the role.

“I’m honoured to take up the role once again,” James told the Western People. “This time, I follow a very illustrious line of presidents, most recently Melissa Walsh, who raised the bar extremely high during her term. It’s brilliant for Claremorris Lions that she has done so, and I hope to emulate that in some way.”

James spoke warmly of the achievements under Melissa’s leadership, particularly in expanding the club’s work into new areas.

“She reached out in particular to support mental health for students through the ‘One Call Can Save a Life’ initiative, and also organised hugely successful senior citizens parties. These were important events at both ends of the spectrum - and we will continue to build on them.”

James also praised Melissa’s initiative in getting the club involved with Mayo Autism Camp.

“We believe there’s a great future in working together with them to support the great work they do.”

Looking ahead, James reaffirmed the club’s commitment to long-standing fundraising events and community initiatives, saying: “We’ll continue doing what we’ve always done - helping where we can, when we can.”

The Lions Club is now actively welcoming new members from the Claremorris area. James described the membership criteria in his typically light-hearted style: “The main requirement? That you’re willing to enjoy yourself! And maybe have a bit of free time - not much.

"The one thing about the Lions is that you can give as much or as little time as you like. Whether it's attending a meeting or standing at a collection point for an hour or two, there’s no one clocking you in or out. We’re grateful for whatever time people can give.”

His dedication and consistent performances throughout the season have been vital to his continued success on the national stage.

Claremorris AC congratulated Philip on this remarkable achievement and look forward to supporting him in his future competitions.

Tuohy Cup win for Claremorris

Claremorris AFC clinched the Tuohy Cup with a 1-0 win over Castlebar Celtic B at Milebush Park last week. Simon Butler’s goal after 31 minutes secured the victory, finishing from a James Morley pass following a save by Celtic’s ’keeper.

Claremorris dominated throughout, showing greater fitness and hunger. Their midfield, led by Fionn McLoughlin and James Morley, controlled the game, while captain Calvin Joyce expertly marshalled the defence.

Chances came consistently for Claremorris, with Ryan McLoughlin, Mark Maloney, and Simon Butler all testing the goalkeeper. Despite some close calls and an offside goal ruled out, Claremorris maintained pressure, denying Celtic space and opportunities.

Substitutes Evan Gannon and Danny Barry kept the midfield strong in the second half, while the defence held firm as Celtic struggled to break through.

Claremorris deservedly lifted the trophy, having outplayed their opponents across the pitch.

Claremorris: Keith Saunders; Brandon Walsh, Jason Murphy, Calvin Joyce, Oisin Brady; Davin McCracken (Dan Murphy 74), Fionn McLoughlin (Evan Gannon, 73), James Morley (Danny Barry, 74); Ryan McLoughlin (Cathal Maloney, 87), Simon Butler; Mark Maloney.

New single from local band

Claremorris-based punk rock band MART have released their latest single, Fearless, now available to view on YouTube.

The track sets to music a poem of the same name by acclaimed Irish poet Dave Lordan, and was adapted with the poet’s permission.

Lordan, an internationally recognised literary voice, has previously seen his work transformed into music by other artists, notably, Lost Tribe of the Wicklow Mountains was set to music by renowned singer-songwriter Christy Moore.

Formed in January 2024, MART have made swift progress on the Irish music scene. In a short space of time, they have supported high-profile acts including Bad Manners (at TF Royal in Castlebar last March), Protex, Ratos De Porão, and The Exploited. Their festival appearances include Night and Day Festival (2024 and 2025) and Arcadian Nights Festival.

The band have also toured extensively, headlining shows at well-known venues such as Galway’s Róisín Dubh and Ole’55, Drogheda’s McHugh’s, and several popular Dublin venues including Fibber Magees, the Grand Social, and the Sound House.

The video for Fearless includes scenes shot in Cong and Cross, adding a local touch to the band's energetic visual style.

MART’s rise in the punk and alternative scene continues to attract attention from fans across the country, and their latest release is expected to further cement their growing reputation.

Defibrillator locations in Knock

Knock Community Futures has issued an important reminder to residents and visitors: knowing the location of your nearest defibrillator could help save a life in the event of a cardiac emergency.

There are currently five publicly accessible defibrillators located around Knock, positioned for quick and easy access in key parts of the town and surrounding area. One device is located at Burke’s Corner Shop on Upper Main Street, with another available at Centra and the Knock Post Office, situated at the roundabout. A defibrillator is also in place at Kiltimagh Knock United’s grounds in Cloonlee on the Kiltimagh Road.
