Claremorris Community Radio has been awarded €35,608 as part of a substantial national funding package recently announced by Coimisiún na Meán.
This announcement forms part of the latest round of the Sound & Vision Scheme, which has allocated nearly €750,000 in total to support 19 community radio and television stations across Ireland.
The Sound & Vision funding programme is designed to bolster media organisations that provide a strong social benefit through a variety of means including educational programming, training initiatives, and employment opportunities. It aims to empower local communities and communities of interest throughout Ireland by enhancing access to media and fostering participation in broadcasting.
Rónán Ó Domhnaill, Commissioner for Media Development, highlighted the significance of the scheme and reiterated Coimisiún na Meán’s commitment to nurturing “a thriving, diverse, creative, safe and trusted media sector". Mr Ó Domhnaill emphasised the vital role community media groups play in the Irish media landscape, noting their deep roots in democratic and participative traditions.
“Community media allows for active participation and representation that leads to more diverse broadcast content,” he said. “It encourages community engagement and offers individuals, particularly those from minority and marginalised groups, the chance to develop new skills, gain confidence, and strengthen their sense of belonging.”
This year’s successful applications reflect a broad range of projects focused on skill development and inclusion. Many involve official accredited training courses, placements, shadowing programmes, and workshops designed to equip volunteers, staff, and wider community members with valuable media skills. Several applicants have also prioritised initiatives aimed at promoting diversity, supporting new communities, and advancing the Irish language and culture.
Claremorris Community Radio’s award will specifically fund its ‘Voices of Claremorris’ project. This exciting initiative comprises five diverse activities intended to enrich the station’s existing programming while deepening community participation, access, and local ownership.
The ‘Voices of Claremorris’ project reflects the station’s dedication to serving as a genuine platform for community expression and engagement. Through this initiative, Claremorris Community Radio aims to strengthen connections within the town and its surrounding areas, ensuring that a wide variety of local voices are heard on air.
The station’s role in fostering community involvement and providing a platform for dialogue and creativity has long been recognised as an important asset for Claremorris and beyond. This latest funding will enable the station to build on that foundation and expand its reach and impact.
Claremorris Community Radio thanked Coimisiún na Meán for the funding and expressed gratitude to its volunteers and supporters who contribute to the station’s success. The station also encouraged local residents to stay tuned for upcoming programming and opportunities to get involved in the project.
As community media continues to grow and evolve, initiatives such as ‘Voices of Claremorris’ ensure that local stories and perspectives remain at the heart of Ireland’s rich and diverse media landscape.
Three local sports clubs were among the beneficiaries of Mayo Sports Partnership’s 2025 Club Development Small Grant Scheme, which saw €30,770 allocated to 56 organisations across the county.
Claremorris Swimming Club received €400 in funding, while Hollymount Carramore GAA Club was also awarded €400. Hollymount Ladies Football Club secured the highest local allocation of €500.
The grants, supported by Sport Ireland and Dormant Accounts funding, are aimed at helping community clubs access equipment and expertise to grow participation.
The Partnership thanked all involved for their ongoing work promoting sport and physical activity and acknowledged the vital backing of Mayo County Council and Sport Ireland in making the initiative possible.
Claremorris Tidy Towns are delighted to announce the return of the popular SuperValu Residents’ Estates Competition for 2025.
Now entering its second year, this community-led initiative is once again being run in partnership with SuperValu Claremorris, whose continued support is making the competition possible.
Following the resounding success of last year’s event, organisers are hoping to see even more neighbourhoods get involved this time around.
Entry forms are now available by emailing claremorristidytowns1@gmail.com, and judging will take place in September. The results will be announced by the end of that month.
The inaugural competition in 2024 saw a tremendous response, with entries from a wide range of local estates. Cluain Aoibhinn emerged as the very first winner of the competition, taking home both a cash prize and a specially commissioned plaque to mark their achievement.
Speaking about last year’s event, Claremorris Tidy Towns committee member Yvonne Keaveney explained that the judging process was based on three core criteria: general cleanliness and absence of litter; biodiversity measures such as bird boxes, pollinator-friendly planting and insect hotels; and the presence of colourful floral features and landscaped beds that add vibrancy to the neighbourhood.
“The entries were judged by independent external assessors,” Yvonne said. “We were delighted with the interest last year, and the standard was very high. The support from SuperValu has also been brilliant - they have been real champions of community enhancement and continue to back our Tidy Towns work wholeheartedly.”
The committee is now considering extending the competition in future years to include streets and roadways in response to interest from other parts of the town. The aim, Yvonne explained, is to encourage residents to take ownership of their local environment and to support small, meaningful steps towards a cleaner, greener Claremorris.
Meanwhile, Claremorris Tidy Towns has also been active on the biodiversity front. In partnership with the Clare Lake Committee, the group recently unveiled a new insect information sign at Clare Lake, a project made possible through funding from Pobal.
The eye-catching new sign offers engaging facts about local insect life and is designed to help educate walkers, families, and nature lovers about the biodiversity of the area.
The Tidy Towns group extended their thanks to all who made the project possible, including Sean Heneghan, Dr Karina Dingerkus for her ecological expertise, Murray Recycled Plastics, Designwest Kiltimagh, and Micky Nally and his team at Clár IRD.
As the 2025 competition season gets underway, the Claremorris Tidy Towns team is calling on residents’ associations, neighbours, and friends to come together and showcase their estates with pride. The message is simple: community spirit, small changes, and a touch of creativity can make a big difference.
With judging taking place in just a few months, now is the perfect time to get involved. Best of luck to all participants, and thank you once again to SuperValu Claremorris and everyone who continues to support the town’s efforts to blossom and thrive.
Mary English was the lucky winner of the luxury hamper in the recent raffle held at SuperValu Claremorris in aid of the Mayo Autism Club. The draw took place as part of a wider fundraising initiative connected to Claremorris Lions Club’s annual Midsummer Night’s Walk.
The event saw strong support from the local community, with generous contributions pouring in throughout the campaign. The combination of the hamper raffle and the walk created a fantastic opportunity for people to come together in support of a vital cause.
The organisers extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated, bought tickets, or helped spread the word. All proceeds raised go directly to supporting the ongoing work of Mayo Autism Club, which provides essential services and support for children and families throughout the region.
Congratulations to Mary on her win - and sincere thanks to all who made the fundraiser such a success.

An initiative for local parents, grandparents, childminders, and their little ones continues in Claremorris - and it’s already generating plenty of interest.
Buggy Buddies, a free weekly parent-and-baby/toddler meet-up, began in May at Clare Lake, and is set to become a welcome fixture for families in the area. Funded by Mayo Sports Partnership and supported by Claremorris Family Resource Centre, the sessions are designed to encourage gentle outdoor activity and create a relaxed social space for parents and carers alike.
The weekly gatherings take place every Thursday morning at 10am, starting at the entrance to Clare Lake. The sessions involve a stroll along the scenic lake trail, allowing participants to stretch their legs, enjoy fresh air, and spend time with others who are at a similar stage in life. Whether you're pushing a pram, chasing a toddler, or simply enjoying a chat, Buggy Buddies offers a friendly environment with no pressure.
The initiative caters to all fitness levels and gives participants the freedom to move at their own pace. It’s not about clocking steps or pushing hard, it’s about connection, conversation, and making time for yourself and your child in a healthy, welcoming setting. The strolls are also a fantastic way to learn about local supports, swap parenting tips, and build friendships with others in the community.
“We know how important it is for parents and carers to have spaces where they can meet up and feel supported,” a spokesperson for the Claremorris Family Resource Centre said. “Buggy Buddies is a very relaxed, inclusive way to make those connections - and Clare Lake is the perfect backdrop.”
Buggy Buddies is open to anyone caring for a baby or toddler, including mums, dads, grandparents, childminders, and guardians. All are welcome, and there's no need to register in advance - just show up at Clare Lake for a 10am start on Thursday mornings.
For more information, or if you’d like to have a chat about what to expect, contact the Claremorris Family Resource Centre on 094-9377838.
Whether you're looking to get a bit more active, meet some new faces, or simply enjoy the fresh air in good company, Buggy Buddies could be just the thing to brighten your Thursday mornings.
There was plenty of joy, laughter, and a few emotional goodbyes at Claremorris National School recently as pupils and staff brought the school year to a close with a series of much-loved traditions.
The school hall was buzzing with excitement as the 3rd and 4th classes gathered for the annual end-of-year quiz - an event that never fails to delight. Pupils tested their knowledge across a range of fun topics while enjoying the upbeat atmosphere, helped along by lively music and a table full of prizes.
Huge thanks go to Ms McGrath for organising not only the quiz questions and answers, but also for setting the mood with great tunes and thoughtful rewards. It was the perfect way to mark the end of term with a fun and friendly challenge.
Elsewhere in the school, the younger pupils had their own adventures to enjoy. Ms McGovern and Ms Lynn’s Senior Infants were thrilled with their recent visit to the local fire station. The trip was filled with learning and excitement, as the children got a close-up look at fire engines and met the firefighters who help keep the community safe. The visit was a clear highlight of their school year and sparked plenty of enthusiastic conversations on their return.
The most emotional event of the week, however, was undoubtedly the 6th Class Graduation. Last week, Claremorris National School bid farewell to 60 incredible boys and girls as they marked the end of their time at primary school with a memorable graduation ceremony.
This was the first official graduation for the school, and it was made extra special thanks to the dedicated work of Ms Murphy and Ms Dillon, who guided the children through the preparations and ensured the occasion was both meaningful and joyful.
The school extends its sincere thanks to Fr Peter Gannon, who led the celebration, and to school chairperson Peter McCallig, whose presence at so many school events - from hurling matches to ceremonies - is always deeply appreciated.
Thanks are also due to Ms Burke, Mr Murray, and all the staff who came together to wish the children well, and to Donna Cassidy, whose beautifully made graduation cake and cupcakes were enjoyed by all. A special mention goes to Darragh, Michael, and the team at Claremorris Town Hall Theatre who helped create a warm and welcoming venue for the celebration, and to the many proud parents, grandparents and siblings who filled the hall with love and support.
As Ms Burke reminded the graduating pupils: “You will always be a part of CNS, and we hope that CNS will always be a part of you.”
There were heartfelt goodbyes and warm wishes at Taugheen National School recently, as staff and pupils gathered to bid farewell to their much-loved colleague, Lorraine Kelly.
Lorraine has been an integral part of the school community, known not only for her dedication and professionalism, but for the warmth, kindness, and positive energy she brought to the classroom and beyond. Her presence will be deeply missed by her colleagues, the children, and the wider Taugheen community.
The staff, pupils and families at Taugheen National School extend sincere thanks to Lorraine for everything she brought to the school and wish her every success and happiness in the next chapter of her journey.
Mollie claims GAA jackpot
There was great excitement for one lucky player last week as Mollie Judd scooped the top prize in Claremorris GAA Club’s 50/50 draw. Mollie’s winning ticket, purchased in PJ Byrne’s, earned her a tidy €920.
The draw continues to be an essential fundraiser for the club, with proceeds going directly towards development and day-to-day operations. Claremorris GAA extended warm congratulations to Mollie on her win and sincere thanks to everyone who continues to buy tickets week after week, both online and through participating shops and pubs in the town.

Claremorris Soccer Club’s 50/50 draw produced another online winner last week, with Damian Carroll claiming the €500 jackpot.
Damian entered via the club’s digital platform, which continues to grow in popularity among supporters.
Each week’s draw helps support Claremorris AFC’s ongoing work in youth development and facility improvement. The club expressed its gratitude to all who entered the draw and encouraged supporters to continue buying tickets, either online or through local sellers.
Congratulations to Damian on his win.
