There is a sense of profound sadness following the death of Fr Gerald (Gerry) French (Columban Fathers), late of Mossbrook, Claremorris, Korea, Britain, Ireland and Dalgan Park, Navan, Co Meath.
Fr Gerry passed away last Tuesday.
He was the goalkeeper for Claremorris’ first-ever Mayo SFC title in 1961, but his career was cut short as he travelled to serve as a Columban priest in Korea.
Later he served in England where he was revered by the Irish immigrants in the Midlands. Returning to Ireland he served for many years in Dublin.
In Claremorris GAA terms, Fr Gerry was like the family member who kept all the family connected. He organised reunions, celebrated funerals and made sure the history of the club was recorded.
“He will be sadly missed. Our deepest condolences to his brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews and legion of friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal,” Claremorris LGFA Club wrote.
Fr Gerry was very involved in the Mayo associations in Ireland and the United Kingdom, and he was a regular attendee at Mayo dinners on both sides of the Irish Sea. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge on Mayo GAA and celebrated Mass for the senior footballers on several occasions before All-Ireland Finals in the past decade.
Fr Gerry was one of nature's true gentlemen, a wonderful priest who left a lasting legacy in the various parishes where he served.
Predeceased by his parents Gerard and Mai, he is very deeply regretted by his siblings Noel, Mary, Sean, Sheila and Arthur; brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, extended family, Columban family and a wide circle of friends.
Mick Mulherin will be in concert at Claremorris Town Hall and Theatre on Saturday, January 20.
The Ballyvary man has a rich voice influenced by country legends like George Jones and Charlie Pride. He is one of the most requested and played singers on Irish Country Music stations; the release of his second album ‘Souvenirs’ proved a huge hit. Not only is Mick a talented artist, but he also engages with his audience in a thoroughly entertaining way, ensuring the night is filled with great music and craic!
Doors at 7pm and the show begins at 8pm. Tickets are €22.50 + order processing fee. Available to buy on www.townhall.ie or call 094-9310999.
