The late Ben McTernan, Lisaniska

Knockmore GAA, Conn Rangers FC and Knockmore-Foxford Boxing Club have all paid tribute to their former player and member Ben McTernan who was laid to rest yesterday (Monday). Ben, from Lisaniska, passed unexpectedly in Portugal earlier this month. He will be dearly and forever missed and loved by his parents Michael and Dawn, his sister Katie, his grandmother Jenny, his aunts, uncles, cousins and his many many friends.

Knockmore GAA, in a club tribute, described Ben as a "gentle giant" and a "true teammate" who represented the club with pride across every age group, including at senior level. "As a goalkeeper, he stood tall for his teammates - dependable, brave, and always ready to put his body on the line for the team. No matter the team or the season, he brought the same infectious smile, warm laugh, and boundless enthusiasm to every training session and game, whatever the weather. He played the game with joy and carried that same spirit into the dressing room, lifting everyone around him."

Conn Rangers FC said their former underage player would be fondly remembered by teammates and coaches alike while Knockmore-Foxford BC remembered Ben as one of their very first members when the club was formed in 2008. "He represented the boxing club with great dignity and respect inside and outside the ring. He had a big kind heart and was immensely well liked by members, coaches and committee members."

Ben lay in repose at Clarke’s Funeral Home, Foxford last Sunday evening, February 22 and his funeral Mass on Monday was celebrated at The Church of Christ The King, Knockmore. Burial afterwards was in Ballinahaglish Cemetery.

May he rest in peace.

Moy Davitts discover opponents

There was great interest locally in last week’s draw for the 2026 Egan Jewellers Mayo Intermediate Football Championship. Moy Davitts, who have reached the semi-finals for four years running and the final in each of the past two seasons, have been drawn in Group 3 alongside namesake Davitts, Lahardane MacHales and Louisburgh.

All three teams are familiar foes of Moy Davitts, who beat Lahardane MacHales in the 2024 group stages after which they got the better of Davitts in the county semi-final while last season they were paired in the same group as Louisburgh who they also proved much too strong for. And it’s against them that Moy Davitts will open their 2026 championship campaign, with Pat Clarke’s side having to make the long trip to West Mayo.

Moy Davitts are at home to Davitts in Round 2 and with both clubs having five players involved in University of Limerick’s Sigerson Cup winning squad recently, that clash of the group heavyweights in Foxford in Round 2 is definitely one worth marking down in the diary.

Moy Davitts’ third group game will be at a neutral venue against Lahardane MacHales, with dates and times to be decided in due course. The championship is due to get underway in August at the conclusion of the inter-county season.

Mayo IFC Group 3 – Round 1: Davitts (h) v Lahardane MacHales, Louisburgh (h) v Moy Davitts. Round 2: Lahardane MacHales (h) v Louisburgh, Moy Davitts (h) v Davitts. Round 3 (neutral venues): Lahardane MacHales v Moy Davitts, Davitts v Louisburgh.
