Another win for St Colman’s

St Colman’s College senior football team had a fantastic win over the Leitrim Schools last week to set up a Connacht final against Sligo’s. Summerhill College.

A powerful start to the second half saw St Colman’s establish a firm lead with a goal from Seán O’Connell after a brilliant pass by Darragh Beirne. This put Colman’s ahead by 1-9 to 0-6.

Soccer boss outlines priorities for the new season

Claremorris AFC Director of Football Simon Collins says that pre-season preparations have been going well at the Premier Division club.

“Over the last couple of years we have been unfortunate not to have a full pre-season,” Simon told the Western People. “This year we have had a full pre-season and it makes all the difference.

"We have very organised sessions and good pre-season friendly matches against Swinford, Ballinrobe and Ballyhaunis. You have to go out to win every game and we’ll do that to try and get back to the Super League, where we feel we belong.”

Simon’s job is to coach the coaches and to bring consistency to training sessions across all levels of the club. He will also act as head coach to the men’s team.

“We’re still looking for a manager, but while that process is ongoing, I’ll take responsibility like I did last year. It’s a lot of work but I am eager to make a right job of it. My job is director of football. That will be my priority. That role is to bridge the gap between the first team, the B team the underage teams. And try and encourage the lads through the ranks. My role as first team coach dovetails with the director of football role in that I am encouraging young players through to the first team.”
