Busy month at Golf Club 

Members of Claremorris Golf Club enjoyed a busy and successful period of competition throughout late May and June, with a series of sponsored Stableford competitions producing some excellent scoring across both the ladies' and men's sections.

The Old Arch Bar and Bistro competition, held on May 24th, saw Mary T. Coyne claim first place in the Ladies 18-Hole Stableford with an impressive 45 points. In the Ladies 9-Hole competition, Margaret Kitching took top honours with 21 points. The Men's 18-Hole Stableford was won by Ger Noone, who finished with 41 points. Category winners included Alan Feerick with 34 points in Category Two, Johnny Monaghan with 40 points in Category Three, Gabriel Farragher with 38 points in Category Four and Fintan Jennings, who secured Category Five with 37 points.

Competition continued on June 7th with the Phelan Motor Factors sponsored event. In the ladies' section, Sara Creighton produced an excellent round to win the Ladies 18-Hole Stableford with 40 points. The men's competition saw one of the highest scores of the month, with Steve Walsh taking first place on a superb 46 points. Category honours went to John Haverty, who scored 38 points in Category Two, Ryan Connolly with 40 points in Category Three, John Finnegan with 42 points in Category Four and Danny Pilbrow, who won Category Five with 35 points.

The Foodstore competition on June 13th attracted another strong entry. Cliona Callaghan claimed victory in the Ladies 18-Hole Stableford with 36 points, while Angela Prenty won Category Two with 33 points. The Ladies 9-Hole competition was won by Eva Brogan on 23 points, with Sinead Daly finishing second on 22 points. In the men's section, Austin Callaghan emerged as overall winner with an excellent score of 45 points. Category winners included Chris Byrne with 38 points in Category One, Damien Walsh with 40 points in Category Two, Cathal Fitzpatrick with 41 points in Category Three and Robert McCormack, who topped Category Five with 40 points.

On June 21st in the Sherry Fitzgerald Hanley sponsored competition, Sara Creighton continued her fine form by capturing another Ladies 18-Hole Stableford title with 39 points. The Ladies 9-Hole competition was won by Mary Coleman, who finished on 26 points. In the men's competition, John McDonnell claimed first place with 42 points. Category winners were Jimmy Heggarty with 36 points in Category One, Cathal Fitzpatrick with 39 points in Category Two, Damien Bourke with 41 points in Category Three and Danny Pilbrow, who secured Category Five honours with 36 points.

Katie Ann Burke, RIP 

The death occurred peacefully on June 23rd of Katie Ann Burke (née Simon) of Kilmer, Ballivor, Co Meath, and formerly of Culnacleha, Tulrahan, Claremorris, and Knockvicar, Boyle, Co Roscommon. 

Katie Ann was predeceased by her beloved husband Paddy and their infant children Sean and Elizabeth. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her loving daughters Marian and Connie, son-in-law Vincent, cherished grandchildren Pádraig, Niamh and Micheál, their partners Lori, Will and Sháuna, and her adored great-grandchildren Izzy, Fíonn and Bláithín, as well as extended family, neighbours and friends.

Removal took place on Thursday evening to the Church of St Columbanus, Ballivor, with Funeral Mass on Friday morning, followed by burial afterwards in the local cemetery. 

May she rest in peace.

FRC receives €8,000 from RTÉ Toy Show Appeal 

Claremorris Family Resource Centre has received a significant funding boost after being awarded €8,000 through the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal 2026. The funding will support the centre in its ongoing work with families and individuals across the Claremorris area, helping to ensure that vital services and supports remain available to those who need them most.

Staff and volunteers at the centre welcomed the announcement, describing it as a valuable contribution that will assist the organisation in continuing its community-focused programmes and initiatives.

Claremorris Family Resource Centre expressed its gratitude to everyone who contributes to the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal each year, acknowledging the important role played by supporters and donors in making funding opportunities such as this possible. The centre said the funding will make a meaningful difference locally and will help strengthen the support available to families and individuals within the community.

The RTÉ Toy Show Appeal has provided funding to numerous community and charitable organisations throughout Ireland, helping projects that support children, young people and families. The latest allocation will enable Claremorris Family Resource Centre to continue delivering services that benefit many people throughout the region.

Mary wins GAA 50/50 

Mary Colleran was the winner of the Claremorris GAA Club 50/50 draw last week, taking home €1,235. The club congratulated Mary on the win. 

The club thanked all supporters who continue to take part in the weekly fundraiser. Funds raised through the draw help support coaching, facilities and underage development. Tickets remain available online and through local shops and pubs.

Timothy Burke, RIP 

The death has occurred of Timothy (Tim) Burke of Seacrest, Barna Road, Knocknacarra, Galway, and originally from Coogue, Knock. Tim died very peacefully on June 18th, 2026, in the wonderful care of the staff of the Bon Secours Hospital Galway, in the presence of his beloved daughters.

Tim was predeceased by his beloved wife Recie, parents Mick and Anne, and sisters Margaret and Bridie. He is greatly mourned by his daughters Carol and Emer, sons-in-law Conor and Barry, and his much-loved grandchildren Cian, Cara, Anna, Eoin and Eva. 

Tim will be deeply missed also by his brothers Peter, Tom and Michael, sisters Bernadette and Jenny, sisters-in-law Anne and Bridie, many nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

Tim’s remains reposed at St Anthony’s Room within the Church of St John the Apostle, Knocknacarra, on Sunday evening, with removal afterwards into the church. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Monday, followed by burial afterwards in Rahoon Cemetery. 

May he rest in peace.

Thomas A. Mullaney, RIP 

The death has occurred of Thomas (Tom) A. Mullaney of Meelickmore, Claremorris. Tom died peacefully at his home. He was predeceased by his parents John and Delia Mullaney, brother Kevin Mullaney, and two infant children. 

Tom will be deeply missed by his adored wife and best friend Margaret Mullaney, and his devoted children Karen Staunton (Padraig Staunton), Gail Mullaney (Derick Murray), Kenneth Mullaney (Karina Mullaney), Mairead Judge (Glenn Judge), Grainne Mullaney (Matthew Morgan) and Ronan Mullaney (Erin Mullaney). 

Tom was a proud grandfather to Diarmuid, William, Nora, Matthew, Anna, Jack, Aoife, Abbie, Penny and Rory. He is also mourned by his sisters Pauline Sheehy, Chris Smith, Una Woolley and Mona Driscoll, extended family, relatives, friends and great neighbours.

Tom’s remains reposed at Gilligan’s Funeral Home, Market Square, Claremorris, on Thursday evening last and his funeral cortege arrived at St Colman’s Church, Claremorris, for Requiem Mass on Friday, followed by burial afterwards in St Colman’s Cemetery. 

May he rest in peace.
