The Cill Aodain Choral Society will be singing at the Sculpture Park on the way back. The committee asks (where possible), that all houses and businesses have a light in their window on all approach routes to help mark the day.
While registration will be accommodated on the morning, the committee encourages as many people as possible to sign up in advance at www.darknessintolight.ie and don't forget to select Kiltimagh/Swinford as your venue. All are welcome including your 4 legged friends.
It is advised to wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes. Please have a high vis jacket or some type of reflective gear and bring your own lamp/torch and water if desired.
If people would like to bring a picture of their loved ones to carry with them on the walk then they are more than welcome to do so. It’s a personal choice for each participant.
New Green Heart of Kiltimagh unveiled to the public. On Saturday, April 27, 2014, a large crowd gathered to witness the official opening of Emigrant Park in Kiltimagh. A large gathering of the local community, contractors, volunteers, political and local representatives were in attendance. The Park was officially opened by Mr Bill Durkan. Mr Durkan generously supported the Emigrant Park committee’s fundraising appeal to complete this stage.
Speaking at the opening, Orla Gibney, Emigrant Park Committee member said: ‘Today we are opening the park as Phase One is now complete which includes a walkway with lighting, seating, pumptrack, the planting of native trees, and an outdoor willow classroom linked to the park’s pathways via a Roman Road. Emigrant Park is a place where visitors can find peace in the centre of town, with the sounds of nature taking precedence over the sounds of the outside world. The safe walkways offer a nostalgia of the country, granting everyone access to the countryside and nature where biodiversity is at the heart. This park is where all members of the community can come together in a social and active environment”.
Gary Smyth, committee member thanked all those who were involved in the project from the master planner, Patricia Tyrell to the local students in St Louis Community School and Youth Reach who worked on the park. He thanked Mayo County Council, local representatives and government agencies; Leader, Towns and Village, OPW and Sports Capital for supporting various projects in the park.
Before opening Emigrant Park Mr Bill Durkan spoke by saying: “In 2018 the committee came to me with plans for the park but they did not have the money to buy the land for the park, so I was delighted to help them purchase the land here and that was my involvement in the park. The name Emigrant Park, I think is very fitting considering all the thousands of people who left the station over the road there down through the years. Some of them never came back and we must think of the people who did stay here and kept the community going. I do hope the people of Kiltimagh and surrounding areas enjoy the park”.
Emigrant Park is a blueprint for sustainable community-led parkland development. The park is a place to not only connect with nature but also with the community. This is phase one of the project and further development will be led by the community. This truly is a community park built by the community for the community.
