Lexi on target for as Mayo reach Inter-League semi-final

The Mayo U12s will look forward to a national semi-final next month after defeating Clare.

The Mayo Schoolboys/Girls and Youths AFL had two of its female teams in SFAI Inter League Quarter-Final action last weekend.

The U13s were in Ennis to face CWSSL (Cork) in a Cup Quarter-Final. The Cork girls were formidable physically imposing opposition and things didn’t look good for Mayo when they fell behind to an early goal. The young Mayo girls really dug in though and matched their opponents right across the pitch for the remainder of normal time and tied the game up with a Saoirse Reynolds goal.

Into the two periods of extra-time and it was Cork who found the net twice in quick succession to eventually see the game out 3-1. Mayo should hold their heads up high having performed so very well all season and the Mayo management team of John Gerard Butler and Jenny Raba have the nucleus of an excellent squad going forward into next year’s competition.

The Mayo U12s had home advantage in Umbro Park, Milebush for their Bowl Quarter Final against Clare. As with the U13s, Mayo found their opponents here to be a big, powerful physical side with the Mayo girls being smart enough to move the ball at speed around them, when possible.

One such sequence of team passing in the first half ended with Lexi Murphy getting on the end of the move to stab the ball home to give Mayo the lead and, what would ultimately prove to be, the only goal of the game.

Mayo showed a composure way beyond their tender years in how they kept possession of the ball and kept Clare at arm’s length for the remainer of the game. They now have a Bowl Semi-Final with Donegal to come in April. The Mayo management team of Mike McGeough, David Bristow, Helen Mc Geough and Clare Hoban will have their charges busy on the training pitch in the interim.
