Congratulations to Séan Ó' Rothláin, winner of the Ailbhe Ní Gherbháin Memorial Cup in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the Leaving Certificate this year. Séan is a former student of SN Ros Dumhach and Gaelcholáiste Comáin. We wish him the best of luck with his third level education in engineering.
Ballyglass Coast Guard Unit
On the final day of August, Minister Jack Chambers TD presented each member of the Ballyglass Coast Guard Unit with individually named and numbered Commemorative Wreck tokens, to mark the 200th year anniversary of the Irish Coast Guard and to acknowledge the valued service, dedication, commitment professionalism volunteered by each member of our unit.
Originally given as a token of service to volunteers following attendance at a major incident. Proof of Service at a wreck tokens haven’t been awarded in recent years and have been discontinued since 1972. Accompanying the Minister on the evening were Dara Calleary TD and local Councillor Séan Carey. Also present were Niall Ferns CGU&S manager and Roisin McBride CUSM Irish Coast Guard.
Tullaghan Bay Rowing Club, Cruinniú na mBád
Cruinniú na mBád 2023 took place during August. It was the ninth event, 10 years after the revival of the regatta at The Ferry. Eleven races were won in blustery conditions. There was something for everyone with races in boats, open boat and Currach. The organisers are delighted that they had so many new competitors and winners.

The Tallaghaun Duff Cup, Winners were Tara Doocey and Kathleen Doocey. Runners Up were Mary Tallott Walsh and Anna Donohue Clarke. The Sonny Sweeney Memorial Cup, winners were Aaron Barrett, Sean McManamon and Donal Murphy. Runners up were Jonathon Doocey, John Ollie Donoughue, Michael Doocey.
The Eddie Doocey Memorial Cup, winners were Darragh Gallagher and Padraig Coyle. Runners up were Luke Carty and Sean Gallagher. The Bunnafolly Captains Cup, Winners were Donal Murphy, Kathleen Doocey, Tara Doocey. Runners Up were Alannah Cosgrove, Sean McManamon and Una McCafferty. The Dinny and Jimmy Masterson Memorial Cup, winners were Derek Cosgrove and Enda Cosgrove. Runners Up were Brendan Masterson and Eddie Doocey. The Ferry Cup winners were Joe, Tony and Enda Cosgrove. Runners Up were Darren, Michael and Anthony O’Toole. The Tony Walsh Memorial Cup, winners were DJ Doocey, Leah Gaughan and Alannah Cosgrove. Runners Up were Mary Tallott Walsh, Tara Doocey and Donal Murphy. The Corless Cup was awarded to Ciara Cosgrove.
The complete guide to Belmullet and the Mullet Peninsula
A new guidebook showcasing beautiful Belmullet and the Mullet Peninsula has just been launched by a highly regarded and well-known local tourist guide Neal Doherty. The book is entitled ‘The Complete Guide to Belmullet and the Mullet Peninsula’. It is a 54 page guide book which covers all historic and social aspects of the area in three tours. It aims to bring to life the tales and spectacular scenery of this area. The three tours covered in detail in this guide include two longer distance tours as well as one detailed Belmullet town walking tour. Each tour has a map showing the location of each point of interest. The first tour in the book covers an area of 66km and is a tour to the south of the Mullet Peninsula. The second tour is one to the north of the Mullet Peninsula. The final tour is a wonderful walking tour of the town with 24 points of interest.
The publication is easy to follow and compact guide, perfect for visitors to the Erris area. Mr Doherty believes that reader’s interests will be piqued by questions. ‘The Complete Guide to Belmullet and the Mullet Peninsula’ is currently available to purchase in local bookstores and retails.
Belmullet Festival 2023 draw
Congratulations to all the winners of the Belmullet festival 2023 draw. The draw took place in Centra Belmullet on Saturday, August 26. A big thank you to everyone who supported this draw by buying tickets and sponsoring prizes.

Dedicated bike repair station in Ballycroy
Ballycroy Tidy Towns committee has installed a dedicated bike repair station at the side of the community centre. This station can be used for repair needs that may arise for cyclists in the area. The pump is also compatible to be used with prams and wheelchairs also. These works were completed in conjunction with Vermillion Energy who awarded us a dedicated grant to improve cycling facilities in the community.
Creative workshops in the Erris area
Flourish Social Prescribing Service in conjunction with Sláintecare and Creative Ireland will be hosting a series of creative workshops in the Erris area in the autumn period. John Hoban’s Music Circle will come to Teach Greannai Cornboy F26 W7W9 on Monday, September 18, from 7-8.30pm for a gathering of songs, tunes and stories. The Music Circle will visit Ballycroy Community Centre on September 27 from 7-8.30pm. All are welcome to attend these musical gatherings and people are free to participate in a way that’s right for you – listen to what’s shared, tell a story, sing a song or play a tune. Anything goes.
Jean Twomey will visit Belmullet in November to run 4 weeks of Creative Writing workshops starting on November 2, in Áras Inis Gluaire. This workshop will be held in a supportive and encouraging group setting and again all are welcome to sign up. Booking is essential. Erris Parent Baby and Toddler Group
Erris Parent Baby and Toddler Group will be meeting every week starting from Monday, September 11, from 10.30am - 12pm in the Irish Wheelchair Centre, Logmore. All parents, grandparents and caregivers are welcome. There is a €3 contribution per family.
Kilcommon Community Development lotto
The draw was held on September 3, and the numbers drawn were; 1, 2, 3 and 17 for a jackpot of €9,700 with no winner. The house prize of €100 was won by Hannah Ruddy, Inver and the €30 offline winners were The McAndrew Girls, Pullathomas and Peter McNulty, Belderrig. Labhair Gaeilge liom
Gaeilge Iorrais is launching a video campaign on social media focused on the central theme of ‘Labhair Gaeilge liom’. This campaign hopes to encourage Irish language speakers, learners and enthusiasts from the Erris / North Mayo Gaeltacht area to put together a brief 10 second clip as Gaeilge on their smartphone and use the phrase ‘Labhair Gaeilge liom.’ A selection of all video clips will be shared publicly on Gaeilge Iorrais social media accounts and website. Local businesses which offer an Irish language service in this Gaeltacht area are also encouraged to participate in this fun and innovative campaign.
Erris Access Group
Erris Access Group is inviting you to come together from across Erris to meet monthly and focus on the issues that matter most. If you are passionate for change and are interested in working together with others in your community to identify access issues impacting disabled people and lobby for equality for people with disabilities in all areas, including footpaths, disabled parking areas, access to public facilities. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 13, at 2pm in the Irish Wheelchair Association, Logmore, Belmullet. This will be an interactive meeting with the opportunity for attendees to raise their concerns and make a plan to address the local issues. Tea and coffee will be served on arrival. Kiltane GAA Club news
There was no winner of this week’s Kiltane GAA Club weekly lotto jackpot of €9,100 with the two €50 winners being M Henry, Bangor and Mairéad Kennedy, Doohoma while Frank Leneghan, Bangor and Ann Cosgrove, Coolaba both won €25. The two online winners were Seamus O’Hara, Doolough €50 and Aisling Murphy, Attycunnane €25.

The late Patrick McIntyre
The death has taken place of Patrick Mc Intyre, New York, USA and formerly Faulmore, Blacksod. Mass will be held in Aughleam church on September 30, next at 12 noon. Burial of ashes afterwards in Faulmore cemetery.
