Westport’s Shannon Sweeney lost her semi-final at the 2026 Elite Championship finals in the National Stadium in Dublin on Friday night.

The 2024 European 50kg champion lost out to Paris 2024 Olympian Daina Moorehouse in a toughly fought 51kg semi-final.

Moorehouse, from Enniskerry Boxing Club, is the reigning 51kg national elite champion and it was always set to be a tricky bout for the St Anne’s boxer. Sweeney gave as good as she got but all judges scored the contest in favour of the Wicklow boxer.

Failing to reach the final may also have funding implications for the European champion, which underlines the strength of this grade in Ireland.

Sweeney had qualified for the semi-finals following a comfortable win over Rachel Lawless in the quarter-finals the previous weekend.
