Castleconnor group return to stage with fantastic play

The cast of 'Second Confession', back row, from left: Declan Howley, Doireann Markham, Pauline Boland, Aisling Foody, Ronan Barrett and Jason Earlis. Front row: Enda Geoghegan, Donal Mulkeen, Anna Maria McHale and Tom Tuffy.

Castleconnor Drama Group are busy putting together their upcoming three-act play, Second Confession, by Paddy Heffernan. The play will be staged in Castleconnor Community Centre on Friday, Saturday and Sunday next, March 13, 14 and 15, at 8pm nightly. It promises to bring intrigue, laughter and mystery in equal measure.

The action takes place over the course of a month in a rural household and a post office. John McCarthy (Donal Mulkeen) has been living a life of deceit, but how has he managed to keep his secrets from his daughters Honey (Anna-Marie McHale), who has looked after him, and Julia (played by Doireann Markham in her first full length play with the group). When Honey ropes in the parish priest Fr Foley (Tom Tuffy) to arrange a 70th birthday celebration for John, a few things don’t quite add up. A nosey neighbour, Nora Tierney (Pauline Boland) likes to know everything that happens in the quiet area, but she seems to have missed a vital event in the neighbourhood.

The local undertaker Boxer Kennedy (Ronan Barrett) is not what you would expect from a person that deals in death every day. He seems to be more preoccupied with life, and finding love! A love triangle starts between himself, Eileen O Rourke (Aisling Foody in her first full length role with the group) and post office worker Myles (Jason Earlis). The local Doctor Phil (Enda Geoghegan) seems to have some answers but also may have been distracted in his house calls. Finally, the local Garda (Declan Howley) tries to piece it all together, but even he is stumped.

Frank Barrett, who directs this production, says: “We are having great fun putting this play together. We are lucky to have such a talented bunch of actors to bring the words of Paddy Heffernan’s script to life. We welcome in particular our two new actresses, and wish them well in their first full-length play. This play reflects a lot of what we see in rural Ireland, from the characters, to the situations, from the everyday life to gossip and death!”

So come along to the community centre in Castleconnor, F26 P7D9, next weekend to witness the shenanigans and goings on in Honey Keating's house. Curtain up at 8pm, but patrons are advised to come early to get a good seat as the crowds at this group's plays have been packed houses in recent productions. Make sure to bring your laughing shirt, because you will need it!
