Ballina school prepares for superb new musical

St Muredach’s College in Ballina is preparing to make history as it brings its highly anticipated musical to the stage. This landmark production marks a significant occasion in the school’s rich tradition of performance, promising a show that will live long in the memory of all who attend.
After months of dedication, rehearsals, and hard work, students are ready to present a powerful and emotionally charged performance. explores themes of friendship, loyalty, and identity, telling a story that resonates deeply with audiences of all ages. With a blend of striking musical numbers, compelling drama, and high-quality production, the show is set to be a standout event in the local arts calendar.
Leading the cast is Mark Conroy in the role of Ponyboy Curtis, delivering a thoughtful and engaging portrayal of the central character. Alongside him, Cillian Birrane-Murray takes on the role of Johnny Cade, bringing sensitivity and depth to one of the story’s most poignant figures. Mark Leonard commands the stage as Dallas Winston, capturing the intensity and edge of the character, while Ryan Strogen and Eoin Golden shine as Ponyboy’s older brothers, Darryl and Sodapop, adding both strength and warmth to the family dynamic.
The production also features a wider ensemble of talented performers, including Grace Ruane, who impresses in the role of Cherry Valance. While this is a landmark moment for St Muredach’s College, the show is further enriched through collaboration with students from St Mary’s Secondary School, whose contributions have added an extra layer of talent and creativity to the production.
Principal Wayne Walsh has praised the production as a defining moment for the school.
“This is a truly historic occasion for St Muredach’s College,” he said. “We have a long and proud tradition, but productions like show how our students continue to break new ground and raise the bar.”
He also highlighted the exceptional quality of the cast, noting their versatility and commitment.
“We are incredibly proud of this group of students. Many of them have already represented the school with distinction on the pitch, showing skill, teamwork, and determination. Now, they are bringing that same level of professionalism to the stage, and it is remarkable to see.”
Mr Walsh also acknowledged the value of partnership in bringing the show to life.
“The collaboration with St Mary’s Secondary School has been fantastic. It has allowed students to come together, share their talents, and create something really special. That sense of unity and shared purpose is at the heart of what makes this production so unique.”
Behind the scenes, the production is guided by co-directors Michael Slater and Laurie Boland, whose leadership and vision have driven the show from its earliest stages to the brink of performance. They are supported by a highly experienced creative team, including renowned vocal coach and musical director Lavinia Gilmartin, choreographer Jennifer Cawley, and set designer Aideen Mulligan. Together, this team has worked tirelessly to ensure a production of the highest quality, bringing out the very best in every student involved.
In recent days, excitement has continued to build, with members of the cast appearing on local radio to speak about their experiences and perform selections from the show. Their professionalism and enthusiasm have only heightened anticipation for opening night.
