Congratulations to Aimee Malee, College Woods, Balla, on winning the "Young Person of the Year" Award in the Mayo Rehab People of the Year Competition. Aimee is a leaving certificate student in Balla Secondary School and is wished well by fellow students, staff and a large circle of friends on her well-deserved award.
Balla Tractor Lights and Fireworks Display 2023 will take place on Saturday evening, December 9. It will start with the kiddies tractor lights parade followed by the main tractor parade, the switching on of the Christmas Lights in the town and finishing up with the massive fireworks display. Kiddies’ parade starts at 6pm from the medical centre, registration for kiddies at 5.30pm at the medical centre. Contact Anna Marie for details 087 780 8638.
Main tractors must register before the event by calling or texting the following numbers, each driver will be added to a WhatsApp group for updates - Liam on 087 8171479 or Peter at 087 2661512. Tractors must be decorated with Christmas lights, tractors with only flashing beacons will not be allowed enter. Absolutely no passengers are allowed in tractors unless a proper passenger seat is fitted. No exception. There will be prizes for the top 3 entries and a draw for all the Main Tractor Drivers and perhaps Santa will appear.
The Black Stranger - Gerard Healy, will be staged in Balla Community Centre on Friday, December 1, and Saturday, December 2, at 8pm.

The Balla Golf Club Mass takes place on this Tuesday, November 21, at 7.30pm for all deceased members. All members who lost a loved one or friend are invited to attend.
The annual bereavement Mass for the Balla/Belcarra Church areas will be held on next Saturday, November 25, at 11am in St. Cronan’s Church, Balla, followed by refreshments in the community rooms. All families who have had bereavements in the past 12 months are invited to attend and also those parishioners who have lost a loved one outside the parish. Balla CRD recently hosted a very informative evening on establishing a Community Alert Group for the parish of Balla. Thanks has been extended to the local and district Gardaí who attended and Ger Costello in his role as Community Alert Development Officer for the Western Region. A follow-up meeting is scheduled be held to form the group with election of officers and area representatives.
Manulla FC lotto jackpot draw took place on November 12, and there was no jackpot winner. The numbers drawn were 5, 10, 12 and 15. The 3 winners of the €25 consolation prizes were Mary Morrissey, Manulla, Sonia Kilkenny, Balla, and Lucy Mai Armstrong, Manulla. The latest draw was on November 19, when the jackpot stood at a highly attractive sum of €11,900.

Manulla FC had eleven girls representing their county over a recent Saturday and Sunday in the SFAI Inter-League competitions and remarkably the five teams coming away with wins.
The club had girls on each of the 5 teams which is great credit to all the coaches involved with girls soccer in Manulla. The female stars were; U12 Riona Corrigan, U13 Amelia Duffy, Aoife Commons, Clara Kelly and Sarah Cunningham, U14 Anna Burton and Grace Mulroy, U15 Sophie O'Donnell, U16 Caoilinn Gilmartin, Kate Guilfoyle and Nicole Ryan. Congrats to all the girls, their Mayo teammates and their management.
Sincere sympathy is tendered to Bernie Gallagher, Roslahan, on the recent passing of his brother William Gallagher R.I.P. May he rest in peace. A Requiem Mass and interment of the ashes took place at 2pm on last Saturday, November 18, at St Cronan’s Church, Balla, Co Mayo.
Congrats are extended to former Balla Secondary School student Ciara Niland’s whose excellent results in the Leaving Certificate 2023 has been acknowledged by Maynooth University. A first year student in the BEd Bachelor of Education - Froebel Primary Teaching degree, Ciara is one of over 70 Maynooth University Entrance Scholars that each achieved 575 points or more in their Leaving Cert. Maynooth University President Professor Eeva Leinonen presented each student with a bespoke piece of crystal in recognition of their splendid achievement during the awards ceremony. The €1,000 entrance scholarship is awarded to incoming first year students, via the CAO, who have obtained 575 points or more in their Leaving Certificate.
On Tuesday, November 28, Balla Community Centre will host an information evening on solar panels for home owners and businesses which will be presented by SEAI Energy and Mayo County Council as part of a county-wide energy series.
