Local Notes: Western Gaels are U13 county champions, phase one of key project complete

West Sligo Athletics Club, Enniscrone, are delighted that Phase One of their new running track is now complete. Located at the Castlefield, Enniscrone, they now have a 400m tarmac-finish track ready for walking, jogging and sprinting.
Together with Enniscrone and District Community Council, work is ongoing to bring the filed inside the track up to pitch standard in the coming weeks. A long jump area is also in progress and will be ready for the 2026 track season.
The club ask for peoples support in keeping the track in great condition, and to remember this tarmac is the base for their future synthetic finish. No driving, cycling or animals are allowed on the track and the club ask everyone to stay off the central field while works continue.
Looking ahead, Phase Two will add lighting and fencing, while Phase Three brings the very exciting synthetic finish which the club will be fundraising for.
Come along to West Sligo Family Resource Centre, Enniscrone, tomorrow, Wednesday, September 10, from 10am to 1pm to register for part time courses which are on offer; beginners computers, advanced computers, beginner English classes and advanced English classes. The death took place of Anne Cosgrove nee Brady, Fortland, Easkey, peacefully at her home on August 30 with her loving family by her side. She was predeceased by her parents Hannah and John and her sister Nora. Anne will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her loving and devoted husband Joe, children Caitlin, John and Siobhan, adored grandchildren Cathy, Patrick, Lochlann, Joseph, Senan and Tom, daughter-in-law Trish, sons-in-law Des and Myles, loving sister and best friend Mary, brother Peter, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, relatives, neighbours and many friends.
Anne reposed at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina, on Tuesday evening, September 2, from 5.30pm with removal at 7pm to St James’ Church, Easkey. Requiem mass was held on Wednesday, September 3, at 12 noon followed by burial in Roslea Cemetery, Easkey. Go ndeana Dia trocaire ar a h-anam.
CLG Iascaigh extended their deepest condolences to the Cosgrove and Brady families on Anne’s sad passing. Anne was one of the founding members of the Easkey ‘Sea Blues’ camogie team in 1961 and played with the club, winning several county titles in the 1960’s. She was heavily involved in the promotion of camogie in Sligo down through the years, and served as President of the Sligo Camogie Board.
The numbers drawn in the Enniscrone combined football clubs blotto draw which was held on Sunday, August 31, were 4, 35 and 43. The €25 prizewinners were Sandra Healy, Peter O’Neill, Niki Battle and Louise and Fionn Kavanagh. The jackpot in the latest draw which was held on Sunday, September 7, in the Pilot Bar was €7000.

CLG Iascaigh will be hosting the inaugural Brendan McGrath Memorial Blitz on Saturday, September 13, at 10am with U13 teams battling it out for the cup, shield and plate, with cakes and bakes also on the day.
This year the annual O’Dubhda Challenge 2025 will take place on Sunday, October 5 with a 10k, half marathon, and 20 miler distances. This charity provides financial assistance and support to bereaved families, helping them to repatriate the bodies of loved ones who pass away while abroad. Huge congratulations to the U13C Castleconnor team who are the shield winners. Their hard work, dedication and teamwork throughout the year has truly paid off. The club extend thanks to their opponents Drumcliffe/Rosses Point for an enjoyable game and for never giving up and giving the Castleconnor lads a great challenge. It was a great way to end the season.
The David Cawley Coaching Academy are delighted to confirm that the Academy Boys (ages 12-14) training will continue this September and October on Wednesday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, at Stokane Community Park. The cost is €100 for 8 weeks. Numbers are limited so don’t leave it too late.

This September 13, Mary’s family and friends are coming together to honour her memory with a special 2nd Annual Memorial Walk. The walk is being held to raise vital funds for two local causes close to the hearts of her family; The Sligo Cancer Support Centre, Tubbercurry, and the Foxford and District Alzheimer Trust. Both organisations provide invaluable support to individuals and families facing difficult journeys, and this fundraiser is a way of giving back in Mary’s name.
The walk takes place at Lough Talt, Co Sligo on Saturday, September 13, at 2pm, with registration at 12 noon. Castleconnor Foroige Club is hosting an information evening ahead of the club’s return in October. The club provides a safe, fun and welcoming space for young people to meet new friends, get involved, and be part of their community. To keep the club running, they need more adult volunteers this year, so if you are curious about what is involved, go along on Friday, September 19, at 8pm to Castleconnor Community Centre.
