Local Notes: Success for West Sligo Athletic Club at Connacht Indoor Athletics Championships

Castleconnor U11s who played at half time at Sunday, February 25, match when Sligo defeated Antrim in Markievicz Park. They proved to be the lucky charm for Sligo.

Connacht Indoor Athletics Championships

West Sligo AC had a great weekend of athletics in Athlone at the Connacht Indoor Championships. On Saturday, February 24, Phelim O’Neill and Matthew Coen competed in their 1st Connacht Indoor event. Phelim finished a brilliant sixth place in a strong U12 shot putt field and Matthew came 12th out of 46 starters in the U12 600m. Massive well done boys.

On Sunday, February 25, Aoife Bourke, Emily Tuffy, Hollie Deehan and Emily McGuire ran the U15 4x200m relay. They finished in an astonishing 4th place. Well done, it was fantastic teamwork from everyone. Hollie Deehan also ran a great race in the U15 800m and Emily McGuire completed a mighty race in the U16 60m hurdles. Finally, Emily Tuffy ran a great 60m race and finished strong.

There was fantastic performances by the Masters, in Shot Putt, there was Mary O’Meara 1st, Geraldine McKenzie 3rd, with Bernie Finley and Carmel O’Neill joint 4th. It was unbelievable throwing from the ladies. Also throwing in weight for distance was Mary O’Meara who was placed 2nd and Carmel O’Neill placed 3rd.

Finally, back on the track there was phenomenal running by Rachel Burke who was placed 3rd in the 1500m and 2nd in the 3000m and Bernie Finlay was placed 3rd in the 60m race.

It is safe to say that West Sligo Athletic Club showed up last weekend. Well done to everyone involved.

West Sligo AC training

Training takes place on Monday evenings from 6 to 6.45pm on the astro for 8 to 9 year olds; 6.45 to 7.30pm on the astro for 10-17 year olds and at 7pm Fit 4 life in the West Sligo Family Resource Centre. On Wednesday evening training is held from 6 to 6.45pm on the astro for 5 to 7 year olds and on Thursdays at 8pm for Fit4Life in the West Sligo Family Resource Centre.

Quiz night

Tireragh CCE are having a general knowledge table quiz on Friday, March 15, at 8pm in The Hilltop, Culleens. They would be grateful if you could support and spread the word about this fundraiser with proceeds towards the upcoming fleady which will take place in Easkey again this year. It promised to be a fun night for all.

GAA membership

Membership for Enniscrone Kilglass GAA Clubn is now due for the coming year. It is important that every player is registered and paid up before the season gets underway.

Well done Darragh

Well done to Darragh Mulrooney, Moy Valley AC, who set a new championship U19 indoor record, taking six seconds off the previous record on winning gold. This was a fantastic achievement, well done Darragh.

Fun Dance Fitness

Fun Dance Fitness with Carmel continues at the West Sligo Family Resource Centre on Fridays from 11am to 12 noon. All ages are welcome and the cost is €8 per session. For further details contact WSFRC at 096 37444.

Kilglass Foroige Club are delighted to announce that they are moving and from March 25, their new meeting place will be the brand new Kilglass Community Centre.

Eoghan Rua Ladies Football Club dinner dance

The Eoghan Rua Ladies annual dinner dance to celebrate the achievements of 2023 will take place on March 16, so dust off the shoes, and get looking for a dress! This will be a special night and what better thjan a bank holiday weekend. The awards are from U14 up. There will be a special guest on the night and more details will follows.

West Sligo Young at Heart

The West Sligo Young at Heart Club in Dromore West Community Centre are back in full swinf on Monday with exercises from 11 to 12 and walking football. On Tuesday there is chair yoga from 12 noon to 1pm and on Wednesdays, sewing is held between 10.30 and 12.30pm, whether you want to learn how to alter clothing or make something new, knit or crochet, it is all going on. The kettle is on and biscuits waiting, so why not head to Dromore West Community Centre.

Community Day at Kilglass Community Centre

Community Day will be held on Saturday, March 16, at 3pm, at Kilglass Community Centre, when they will have the first stage of the new digital hub and community centre opening.

The official opening will be later in the Spring but the committee are inviting the entire community, the generous sponsors, and supporters to come and experience the new centre at a fun and informal community day on Saturday, March 16. Special guest on the day is the talented Tommy Marren from Mid West Radio. This is an opportunity for the community to come together to see and share how the new centre and digital hub can serve the locality and celebrate how far this project has come in the three years since the initial fundraising online St Patrick’s Day concert.

The day will include; fun and games for children, face painting, Ireland’s Six Nations game on the big screen, complimentary party food, information and tours of the building and the services available, speech by Tommy at 3.30pm, music and details of new events and clubs.

The annual Easter Egg Hunt and Family Day will be held on Easter Sunday, March 31, from 12 noon to 3pm in Kilglass House F26 H685. This is strictly a ticket event only. Dream Holiday fundraising draw

Western Gaels Hurling and Camogie Club have embarked on its own adventure to develop the first hurling and camogie home grounds in Co Sligo, and they are giving you an incredible opportunity to pack your bags and travel anywhere in the world all for €25 per ticket as a fundraiser. They are limiting the number of tickets to 7500 so buy early to avoid disappointment. First prize is €8000 travel voucher and €5000 spending money; 2nd €5000 travel voucher and €3000 spending money; 3rd €3000 travel voucher and €1000 spending money and 4th through to 6th prize €1000 cash.

The draw will take place on March 16 and if the tickets are all so before the specified date, they will hold the draw sooner, so keep an eye out for updates.

Bingo

Bingo is held in the Old Church, Enniscrone, every Tuesday at 8pm with doors opening at 7pm with free tea and coffee on offer. The proceeds are in aid of Western Gaels Hurling and Camogie Club. All are welcome to come along and support and be in with a chance to win.

Buggy Buddies

The Buggy Buddies programme with Bernie Finley, in conjunction with Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership, meet on Wednesday mornings at 9.45am for a walk at 10am. The cost is €2 per session and the group meet at the Enniscrone Family Resource Centre. There will be indoor activities in the centre if conditions are too wet. All are welcome to come and join for a walk, a cuppa and chat.

The Wavy Crafters

The Wavy Crafters are a group of ladies who meet every Thursday morning at 10.30am in The Courthouse, Easkey, to share their enjoyment and knowledge of all things crafty ie knitting, crochet and sewing. Call 086 3153851 for further details.

Beginner Irish conversation classes

Beginner Irish conversation classes for adults is held every Thursday evening in the Old Courthouse, Easkey from 7pm. Come along and join Brid McGowan for a bit of chat As Gaeilge. All levels are wecome.

Down Syndrome Sligo

Down Syndrome Sligo are looking for volunteer collectors to help support in a church gate collection. The permit is for March 23 and 24. If there is somebody who regularly collects and would like to help out, they would be delighted to hear from you. Down Syndrome Sligo is a small community group who receive no mainstream government funding so they rely heavily on collections like this. Castleconnor Amateur Dramatic Society presents The Country Boy by John Murphy in Castleconnor Community Centre on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 15, 16 and 17, at 8pm.

Rachel represented Sligo

Well done to Rachel Jones, Castleconnor Handball Club who represented Sligo in the U14A Singles Connacht final last weekend. This was a great achievement.

Community Games

Well done to Adam Cawley, Castleconnor Community Games on winning a gold medal in the U11 gymnastics at the county competition on Tuesday, February 27. Well done also to Shonagh and Reily for putting in great performances in their events.

Dromore West Easter Camp

Booking for the Dromore West Easter Camp is now open. It will take place on March 27 and 28 and will include fun, games and activities with Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership. GAA lotto

The numbers drawn in the Castleconnor GAA Club on February 24 last were 12, 15, 18, and 36. Congratulations to Sharon Gilmartin, Martin and Margaret Cooney, Martin and Kathleen Carrabine and Charlie Kane who all matched 3 numbers and won €25 each. The jackpot in the latest draw which was held on March 2, was €20,500.
