Enniscrone Kilglass GAA Club received sad news last week following the passing of one of their finest ever players, Liam Caffrey.
Liam forged a reputation as one of Sligo’s best defenders over a decade-long career in the black and white, having first represented his county at minor level in the late 1950s. He often took to the field alongside his brother Aidan, who also enjoyed a lengthy career at county level.
Aside from his exploits with Sligo, Liam had the very significant distinction of winning a Railway Cup medal with Connacht in 1969 which, at that time, was regarded as one of the top accolades in the game.
At club level, Liam played for Enniscrone Kilglass GAA club for many many years through the 1950s, 60s and 70s, returning for matches even when work had taken him to other locations around the country. He was part of their Junior Championship winning team in 1966 and also featured in the 1972 Senior championship final.
Liam’s funeral took place in Tuam, Co Galway on Friday morning before he was laid to rest in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Kilglass. The club extends its deepest sympathies to Liam’s family at this sad time. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
Kilglass Parish Community Centre are hosting their first ever Kilglass Hub Table Quiz, hosted by Billy Varley on the Sunday of the May Bank Holiday weekend. Last year the community came together in an incredible way and raised €99,000 through their sponsorship drive. Because of that support, they were able to contribute €50,000 (their match funding requirement) towards Phase 1 of the hub development.
Now, there is a €65,000 payment to Sligo County Council for their match funding requirement for Phase 2. This will be used to help build Phase 2. This is a huge milestone and something the whole community should be proud of.
The hub is doing really well, but the committee need to rebuild the fundraising buffer in order to continue developing the space and supporting activities in the community. So this quiz night is about getting people together for a good night out while helping the hub continue to grow. Get your team together, expect tough questions from Billy with plenty of laughs along the way.
