Local Notes: St Patrick's Day success for Swinford Killasser LGFA

Golf Card results

Golf Club Card results from Thursday, March 21 were; card winners 1st/2nd was shared by Brian McNulty, John Gallagher, Margaret Waters and Philip Irwin; 3rd Mary Callaghan and Josie Prendergast. Raffle prizes were won by Margaret Sweeney, Michael Ryan, Michael Regan x2, Margaret Waters, Maureen Morley, Geraldine Turbitt and Bernadette Ryder. The proceeds of the night went to Daffodil Day and the organisers are grateful to all who contributed on the night.

Golf

Swinford Golf Club is excited to launch their Junior Golf Program, an initiative aimed at introducing golf to U15s in a fun and friendly environment. The program kicks off with an information afternoon at the clubhouse on April 27, from 2 to 4pm, offering families an overview of the activities and opportunities available.

Following the kickoff event weekly golf lessons will commence starting May 4, taking place every Saturday afternoon. These sessions are open to all levels, from novices to those with a budding interest in golf, ensuring that every child can find their swing.

The Junior Golf Program, run by dedicated volunteers, is focused on teaching the fundamentals of the game while emphasising sportsmanship, respect, and teamwork. It's a perfect way to introduce youngsters to a sport that promotes physical health and social interaction.

Indoor Market

The next Swinford Indoor Market will take place on Saturday, April 6 in Swinford Cultural Center from 10.30am to 3pm. A diverse range of vendors will be showcasing an array of products, including locally sourced produce, crafts, and other unique items. Cácaí Acla will be serving teas, coffees, and their fabulous bakes indoors at the market, so bring a friend and enjoy a coffee.

Lotto

The numbers drawn in the Swinford Community Lotto draw held on March 25 were; 1, 5, 11 and 22.. €70 vouchers were won by Bernie Mellett, Larch Hill and The Dunleavy Family, Kilkelly; €35 was won by Kevin and Liam, c/o Campbells; Marie and Meghan Philbin, Lislackagh; Ronan Doherty, Tullinacurra and Sean Kavanagh, Carracanada. The jackpot is now €12,000.

Siamsa celebrations

Swinford Siamsa Sraide festival are delighted to announce the start of their 40th anniversary celebrations will take place in New York this coming Friday, April 5, at 8pm in Connollys Bar, Time Square, as part of the Mayo GAA football teams championship match versus NY GAA.

This year the committee are pulling out all the stops as they continue the fantastic annual street festival for the 40th year.

The Butterfly Garden committee are delighted to announce that Feileacain will host the Mayo Spring Service of Remembrance on April 14th at 3pm in the Gateway Hotel.

Blath na Féile 

This year Blath na Féile will take on a new and different format. The organisers are calling all past Blaths (everyone who participated, not just crowned Blath’s) to compete in the ultimate Queen of the Blaths. 2024 is a big year for Síamsa Sráide Street Festival celebrating 40 years and is also the 10th anniversary of the first blath.

Swinford AC Spring 5k series

The Swinford AC Spring 5K Series will commence on Wednesday, April 3, in Killasser and will continue until May 8, as follows - April 10 Meelick, April 17 Swinford, April 24 Midfield, May 1 Foxford and May 8 Kiltimagh. Active Retirement

Swinford Go Getters

Swinford Go Getters meet on the first Thursday of the month from 1.15 to 3.15pm in the Cultural Centre for Activator Pole Walking which helps improve posture. There is also a game or two of Boccie. €4 per day which includes tea and biscuits. Remaining Thursdays there is a walk from 1.15 to 2.15 to help keep active. Active Minds

Tai Chi classes every Wednesday at 8pm in the Cultural Centre. Open to everyone to participate and enjoy.

Meelick Card results

Results of the final game of the season played in Meelick Community Centre on Tuesday, March 26, were card winners; Philip Moore, Seamus Conwell, Annie McNeela, Esther Munnelly, Matt Duggan and Margaret Waters. Raffle prizes were won by Terry Maughan, Maureen Morley, Michael Ward, Phyllis Bredican, Dette Ryder, Mary Higgins, Mary Lynskey and Esther Munnelly. The organisers wish to thank all the card players for their support and look forward to seeing everyone back again in October.

Swinford Killasser LGFA news

Swinford Killasser ladies began their 2024 campaign with a solid win against Aughamore LGFA in Round 1 of the Melissa Patterson Memorial League on March 24, last in Aughamore. The final score was 1-07 to 1-13. Swinford Killasser thank Aughamore for the lovely refreshments provided afterwards.

Round 2 of the league saw Swinford Killaser take on Ballyhaunis on March 31.

Round 3 of the U16 Starred League Division 3 Group A saw Swinford Killasser take on The Neale on April 1.

Talk with Dr Lisa Cunningham

Swinford Killasser LGFA played host to Dr Lisa Cunnigham who provided an informative talk on nutrition, wellbeing and women’s health to the U14, U16, minor and senior ladies. Dr Lisa is part of the senior Mayo LGFA and GAA background teams. She is a consultant in emergency medicine, prehospital physician and an experienced aesthetic practitioner. All attendees found the talk highly beneficial and were delighted to receive the benefit of Dr Lisa’s wisdom.

St Patrick’s Day success for Swinford Killasser LGFA

The club was delighted to win the overall ‘Best Float Award’ at the recent St Patrick’s Day parade in Swinford. The club is delighted and honoured to be the recipients of the inaugural Padraic Gavin Memorial Cup awarded to the best float. The theme of this year’s parade was Irish TV and Movies and the club embraced the theme wholeheartedly as the Derry Girls took to town. Based on the infamous ‘Across the Barricades’ episode of the hit show the ladies put their own spin on ‘Across the Barricades to Integration’ as the proposed integration of the GAA and the LGFA is touted for 2027. There was much rivalry and revelry between the two clubs on St Patrick’s Day with the men’s club vowing to take victory in 2025. Watch this space!!

Mass Time Change

Martin Sheridan Bursary Awards Scheme

The 2024 Western People Martin Sheridan Bursary Awards Scheme is now open for applications. There is €5,000 in funds available to support athletes from Co Mayo. 50th Anniversary Commemorative Mass

As part of the 50th Anniversary of the Moy Davitts GAA Club a special Commemorative Mass will be held on Friday, April 19, at 7.30pm in St Michaels Church Foxford. All are invited and welcome to attend this special celebration.

Tractor Run 2024

Parke Crimlin Development is holding its Tractor Run on next Sunday, April 7, starting in Parke at 12.30pm, proceeding through Turlough Village, onto the N5 past Horkan’s. The cavalcade will follow the N5 to Ballyvary, turning onto the N58 Ballina Road and on to Doherty’s Pub, turning left through Knockfall and back to Parke via Muckanagh. Proceeds in aid of Local Development and Mayo Autism.

VAKS Programme

Knock Youth Ministry are now accepting applications for VAKS (Volunteer at Knock Shrine). This programme offers an opportunity for young people in TY, 5th and 6th year to come to Knock to volunteer for a weekend in either July or August. This is a great way to meet new friends, serve others, express your faith and have fun. It is a particularly exciting opportunity this year as we launch our new state of the art Youth Village this summer.
