Well done to all involved in the St Patrick's Day Parade by showing their support to the community that supported them throughout the year. Well done to all the committee of Claremorris St Patrick’s Day Parade for a job excellently carried out.

It was a very enjoyable day and even the sun obliged!

There was then a brilliant fireworks display in the evening time to cap off a memorable day.

“Claremorris you are amazing, thank you to each and every helper, sponsor, cheerleader, float participant, and lots, lots more of you. There were so many of you working quietly behind the scenes to make sure it was the best day, and it was. This is community and ye are the best community ever!” the Claremorris St Patrick’s Day Committee said on social media.

Mayo U20s

Well done to all the Claremorris lads who played for Mayo in their 3-7 to 1-13 draw against Roscommon in Round 1 of the Connacht U20 Football Championship at Dr Hyde Park last Wednesday.

Claremorris players Darragh Beirne and Niall Hurley both rattled the back of the net while David Slattery and Paul Gilmore both performed well in the back-line.

All four men played the full game, while Rio Mortimer is on the extended panel.

Garrymore’s Eoin McGreal made a big impact from the bench, making a wonderful full-length diving block to deny Rob Heneghan a winner deep in stoppage time.

Next up, Mayo will welcome Galway, who defeated Leitrim 2-16 to 0-13 in their opener, to Hastings Insurance MacHale Park.

Comedy

Harvest Moon Theatre Group bring their multi-award winning comedy play, ‘Now and Then’, to Claremorris Town Hall Theatre on Good Friday night, March 29th. The production has played to standing ovations all over the country.

A young barman, Jamie, is closing up one night in 1981, and waiting for his girlfriend Abby, when an older man comes in for a quick one. The man tells them that he just wants to stay a while, have a drink and that he will then leave quietly. Soon the man makes Jamie and Abby a ridiculous offer – one that is very tempting. And he tells them a story, which seems unbelievable.

When another stranger arrives, the unbelievable suddenly seems like it might just be true. Will they accept the offer, and if they do, what will the consequences be? What happens that night, may, or may not, change the course of Jamie’s life.

This is a cracking story about love, following your dreams (or not) and the costs of the decisions we make. The play is suitable for all ages.

Sean Grennan’s play, ‘Now and Then’ was originally set in an Irish bar in Chicago in 1981. Harvest Moon’s presentation is an Irish adaption of the play, by John Corless.

Harvest Moon Theatre Group is based in Claremorris, with members drawn from all over Connacht. The cast of ‘Now and Then’ is made up of Rosemary Dixon, Vera Kilgallon, Kevin Woods and John Morley. The play is directed by John Corless.

Harvest Moon likes to introduce new plays, or re-imagine well-known plays, for audiences around the country. Their multi-award-winning 2023 production, ‘God of Carnage,’ had a very successful summer residency in Westport. The group is delighted to be returning to Claremorris Town Hall Theatre, this Good Friday night with this new play.

The play is suitable for all audiences. Tickets for the Good Friday show are available from the Theatre on 094-9310999 and online at www.townhall.ie. Doors open at 7pm and the show commences at 8pm.

Co-ed school

An amalgamation proposal for the two secondary schools in Claremorris is moving forward.

In a joint statement, the patrons of Mount St Michael Secondary School and St Colman’s College said they had met to discuss a report on the recent consultation on the future of Catholic secondary education in Claremorris. The report was shared with the boards of management of both schools in mid-December, following which, more time was given to both schools to make further submissions.

The patrons are now exploring all options including, but not confined to, the possibility of amalgamating both schools to form a new amalgamated Catholic co-educational school on a site chosen by the Department of Education.

The patrons of both schools will commence an engagement with the Department of Education Building Unit with the aim of enhancing the educational facilities available for all students in Claremorris.
