Local Notes: Soccer legend Shay Given pays visit to Belmullet

Former Republic of Ireland and Newcastle Utd goalkeeping great Shay Given recently dropped in to Iorras Aontaithe/Erris Utd pitch at Carnenash Park to check out and inspire some of the up and coming academy talent at the club. Shay was very impressed with the facilities and all the young hopefuls and coaches.

Former Republic of Ireland keeper and Newcastle Utd great Shay Given dropped by the club ground on Friday, May 31st, to meet all the academy coaches and all the young hopefuls and to view the club facilities. The Donegal native was very impressed.

Iorras Aontaithe moved back to the top of the table in Division One recently with a 4-3 win over Partry Athletic as Owen McHale hit the winner with four minutes remaining.

McHale had given his side a half-time lead as his goal on ten minutes was all that separated the sides at the break. Partry were level straight from the kick-off through Liam Burke but James Lavelle had Iorras back in front within three minutes.

An own goal from Pete McArthur got Partry back on level terms just after the hour mark and the home side then went ahead thanks to a goal from Fianach McGhabhann. Iorras rallied and made it 3-3 a few minutes later as Dara Padden was on target for Michael McHale’s side and his son Owen then hit the winner on 87  minutes to secure another three points for the men from the Barony.

The senior squad have also qualified for the Tonra Cup against Castlebar Town (away) with a final score of 7-1. The goals came from Pete McArthur, Ivan Barrett, James Lavelle Owen McHale, Brendan Conway (2), Mark Gilbert.

Congrats to all and a date for the final will be announced.

Congratulations Erris Utd U13 (A) team and management on their league champion success. They secured the title recently with an impressive 4-1 win away to Ballyheane. Thanks to goals on the night coming from Henry, Fergal and two for Junior.

Bangor Hibs in Cup Final

Congratulations to Bangor Hibs who recently qualified for the McDonnell Cup Final on their first attempt since returning to Mayo League Football after a 1-0 win over Ballinrobe Town (B) at Ballybeg Park recently.

A Kyle Holmes goal midway through the second half decided the tie but in truth Hibs had the chances to make it a lot more of a comfortable victory.

James Armstrong had the best chance of the first half as he hit the side netting when it looked like he was destined to score and Sean Vahey also went close for Ballinrobe when his chipped effort from forty yards just went over the bar. Hibs finally went in front midway through the second half when Kyle Holmes' attempted cross from the left wing evaded everyone and found the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

James Armstrong went closest to adding a second when he hit the crossbar with a header but it didn’t matter as they held out to reach the McDonnell Cup Final.

Bangor Hibs Girls and Boys U10 Soccer Academy will begin on next Saturday, June 15th, at 11am in Ballybeg Park. Sessions will be one hour long and will run until mid-October (excluding August 10th, 17th and 24th).

Charity fundraiser

The players that played in the Erris Pool League 40 years ago were back in action over the recent Bank Holiday weekend at a fundraiser in the Erris Coast Hotel.

Fourteen players turned up to represent Kitty's and Flannery's in the rematch of the 1984 Final in what turned out to be a very entertaining night. In total, almost €1,300 was raised and was split between the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice and Western Care Belmullet.

Thanks to all the players that turned up on the night and a special mention to J.T. McGuire who played and won both his frames less than a year away from celebrating a milestone birthday. The players seemed to enjoy the night and it was great to be there to see their reactions when they met up with their former teammates and rivals.

Thanks to Anthony Healy from Healy Amusements for providing the table and to the Erris Coast Hotel for providing the perfect venue for the event and for all their help in the days leading up to it.

Thanks to the members of the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice and Western Care Belmullet who were there to help with the raffle and also to Jack Coyle for his help in organising the All-Ireland winners presentation and to the players that travelled from Balla and Westport to pick up their awards.

Finally, thanks to each and every one that came out to support the event especially for your generosity towards the charities as we brought the 2024 Erris Pool League Season to a close.
