Local Notes: Setting off on 'The Long and Winding Road' as Ballintubber Lights Up Challenge gets underway

There was no winner of the jackpot in the latest Ballintubber GAA Lotto draw. 4, 7, 18 and 31 were the numbers drawn and the winners of the consolation prizes of €20 each on the night were Oliver Mortimer, Rebecca McNeely, Margaret Jennings, Nuala Heneghan, Ronan Mannion and James Malone.

Julia and Thomas McNally, Ballintubber, have extended thanks to all who contributed to their Christmas Home Light fundraiser for autism. A very generous total of €1,555 was raised.
Ballintubber GAA Club is offering a lucky winner the chance to earn €1,000 a week for a year in their recent ‘Win €52K’ fundraiser. The attractive fundraiser will see one lucky winner claim a cash prize of €52,000 paid out at €1,000 per week into their account. Tickets are reasonably priced at €20 each or three for €50 and can be purchased through the club fundraiser website www.win€52k.ie or from any of the club’s executive. The winner will be drawn in the club’s Clogher clubhouse on Sunday, June 2, and will be broadcast live on the club Facebook page.
Sincere sympathy is accorded to Bernadette Keaveney (Ballyglass), and Johnny Mee (Castlebar) on the passing of their sister Margaret (better known as Margie) Moran née Mee, The Curragh, Castlebar and a native of McHale Road, Castlebar. Margaret passed away peacefully in the wonderful care of the staff of the Ross Suite, Sacred Heart Hospital. Her remains reposed in Kilcoyne’s Funeral Home, Thomas Street, Castlebar, on Thursday evening and her funeral arrived at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, on Friday morning, January 19, for her funeral Mass at 11.30. Burial ceremonies took place in Castlebar New Cemetery. May she rest eternally in the peace and happiness of heaven.
Ballyglass Active Age group resumed their exercise classes on a recent Tuesday after taking a well-earned break for the Christmas. All were happy to get moving again. The class was followed by the first monthly meeting of the New Year followed by a cup of tea and plenty of chat. Ideas for activities and outings for the coming year were discussed. Yoga classes commenced on Wednesday, January 10, also. There's plenty to look forward to as the year progresses for this busy group. New members are always very welcome.
Ballyglass FC AGM will be held on January 26, at 8pm in Ballyglass FC Clubhouse. All members are requested to attend and new members will be most welcome.

Ballyglass Community Council will hold its AGM on Wednesday, January 31, at 8pm in Ballyglass Community Centre. All members are asked to attend. New members are always very welcome.
Due to some essential repairs to the flooring in the community centre, there will be no market in Ballyglass during February. The next Ballyglass Market will hopefully take place on March 9.

The Liverpool George Moore conference programme will be published next month in February. The conference is planned to run from early afternoon on Wednesday, May 8, with the first day concluding with a wine reception. Thursday 9th will be a full day of papers and other GM activities, with the conference dinner in the evening. There will be no formal academic activities scheduled on Friday 10, the excursion to Chester races (it is still possible to book tickets for this, but you would need to do so directly through the racecourse.

January is here and its time for the GAA's Ireland Lights Up Steps Challenge. The challenge has kicked off and would-be participants need to download the app and register for the challenge. Last year Ballintubber finished in the top 5 in Connacht, aim to be number one this year! Last Thursday, January 11, was the first walk held also with Sunday mornings so pencil that in the diary and spread the word.
Ballintubber is registered under 'Ballintubber GAA Club Mayo'.

Fitness classes by Tuar Mhic Éadaigh local and qualified personal trainer, Nathan Kurensky (Fitfinity), was due to commence on Tuesday, January 16, for 7 weeks. The class is suitable for all fitness levels. It is a circuit based class with a mix of cardio, body weight workouts and weights. The cost for 7 weeks is €50. You will be paired with someone who speaks Irish to support you in increasing your vocabulary. Meet up at Ionad Spóirt Thuar Mhic Éadaigh agus get walking. There is a great group with Irish to join up with you and plenty of craic and conversation is guaranteed. It happens every Monday and Wednesday for the "Ireland Lights Up" initiative. The "Every Step Counts Challenge 2024" ensures a collective 4000km puts the club in with a chance to win 3 prizes of €2,500! Geraldine Feerick is currently receiving treatment for her condition in Germany and England. Ger has had a strong relationship with Tourmakeady throughout the years. Ger attended Coláiste Mhuire and also worked in Treenlaur National School as a teacher for a while. During her time in Tourmakeady she was a huge asset to the area.
Ger instilled the children’s interest in the Irish language, football and dance. Ger made every effort to promote Gaelic football in the school and she organised dance classes in the evenings for the local community.

The Parent and Toddler Group are getting together again in Halla Tuar Mhic Éadaigh after the Christmas break on this Tuesday, January 23, from 10.30am-12.30pm. There are plenty of toys for the children, and parents can have chat and a cuppa.
Eucharistic Adoration takes place in Partry Church; on Mondays from 6 to 8pm. Adoration in Tourmakeady Church is on each Wednesday evening at 7pm concluding with Mass at 7.30pm.

Congrats are extended to Joseph Lavelle, Ballyburke, who graduated with a PhD in Philosophy and Psychology from University College Dublin on December 7. Joseph received his national school education at Killawalla National School and secondary education in Coláiste Muire, Tourmakeady, and his undergraduate degree from NUI Galway. Son of Noel and Mairead Lavelle, Ballyburke, Joseph is wished every success in his future career by his wife Jessica, his parents and extended family.

The death took place last week of Paddy Duffy, Breaffy, Castlebar, Co Mayo. Paddy passed away suddenly, at his home and his passing is an occasion of deep sorrow for his loving family and many friends and relations. Predeceased by his brother Patrick, sisters Annie Cunnane, Nellie McHale and Jenny Ruane he is deeply regretted by his wife, Kathleen (Kathy), his family: Adrian, Padraic, Sinéad, Brendan, Declan, Colm, Helen, and Eilis, sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, his grandchildren Roisin, Saoirse, Eoghan, Amy, Lonan, Daniel, Andrew, Ruairi, Sean, and Sarah, his sister Chris Kearns, brothers Jack (Michael), Joe and sister-in-law Kathleen, nieces, nephews, and friends to whom sincere condolences are extended. Paddy's remains reposed at Coady’s Funeral Home on last Wednesday from 5.30pm until 7pm followed by removal to his home. Removal from his home took place on Thursday morning at 11am to St Aloysius Church, Breaffy, for Requiem Mass at 11.30am. Funeral ceremonies took place afterwards in Breaffy cemetery.

Ireland Lights Up in partnership with Operation Transformation has recommenced and will continue every Wednesday evening from 7pm for five weeks. The walks are open to the whole community and everyone is encouraged to come out and get walking at either Ballyheane or Breaffy pitches. All abilities are catered for with tea/ coffee and a chat afterwards in the clubhouse. The club has thanked all for the great turnout in Breaffy for the kick off of Ireland Lights Up in association with Operation Transformation.
The death occurred last week of Mary Mullaney (nee McTigue), Meelickmore, Claremorris, and Lohan Park Group Home, Brickens, Claremorris, and formerly of Breaffy, Co. Mayo. Mary passed away peacefully Mayo University Hospital.
She is deeply regretted by her loving husband Tom, brothers Pat, Jimmy and Billy, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends to whom sincere sympathy is tendered. Mayo Ireland Palestine campaign is hosting a human rights talk on Palestine West Bank. Join for an evening with Áine Treanor who will share her experience as a Human Rights Observer in the West Bank Palestine. Amanie Issa from Bethlehem a PHD student who will talk about life under occupation in the West Bank at the TF Royal Hotel, Castlebar, at 7pm on Friday, January 26. Admission is free.

Applications are being accepted under the following headings: Residents Associations, Clubs/Organisations, Festivals and Events and Burial Grounds. Funding applications will be considered for activities or projects which promote directly or indirectly the social, economic, environmental, recreational, cultural, community or sporting development of the Mayo area. This year's Senior Scór County Final will be held in Balla Community Centre on Friday, March 22. The night gets underway with the quiz at 7pm. This will be followed at 8.15pm approx. by stage events incorporating music, song, drama and dancing. Clubs are encouraged to do their best to enter at least one act into the competition. Balla GAA Club lotto jackpot prize stood at €4,600 for the draw on Thursday, January 11, in Flukies. The numbers drawn were 4, 23, 25 and 30. Jimmy passed away peacefully on January 17. The removal of his remains took place on Saturday morning at 10.30 to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, for Funeral Mass at 11.30. Burial ceremonies took place afterwards in Castlebar New Cemetery. May he rest in peace.
