Connaught Showjumping Awards success

Congratulations have been extended to Richard Howley, Dooneen, Enniscrone, on winning the International Riders Award and to Paddy Reape who won the Special Recognition Award at the Showjumping Ireland Connaught Awards. It was a fantastic and successful year for both riders with lots more to come in the year ahead.

Jennifer reads at the Holocaust Memorial Day

Well done to Jennifer Blakeney, a student of Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone, who was chosen as one of the youth readers at the Holocaust Memorial Day in Dublin recently. Jennifer was one of the prizewinners in the Mary Elmes Prize in Holocaust Studies, as part of her religion class with Ms Byrne in transition year. Jennifer came first place in the literary category for her poem entitled, ‘The Quiet Heroine’.

Awards night

Enniscrone Kilglass GAA Club will hold their awards night on February 10, at 8pm in the Diamond Coast Hotel. They will be celebrating all club achievements throughout the 2023 season; Division 3 league winners; Minor A league and championship shield winners; U13B plate winners; individual awards, and Mothers and Others awards. There will be finger food and refreshments on the night and everyone is welcome to come along and celebrate.

Keeva Flynn signs for Sligo Rovers

Congratulations to Keeva Flynn, a former Kilglass Enniscrone Utd FC player, who has signed for Sligo Rovers for the 2024 season. Last year Keeva became the youngest player (15 years 234 days) to play for Rovers when she made her debut away to Cliftonville. Her impressive form at academy and senior levels has seen her called up to Irish international squads. Keeva’s most recent call-up was just last week when she played for the Ireland U17 side that beat South Korea and Portugal in two friendlies.

Speaking on signing with the senior squad, Keeva said ‘I am delighted to be signing for Sligo Rovers senior team for the 2024 season. It’ll be an exciting year coming off the back of the work done last season, and I can’t wait to get going with Tommy and the girls and look to build on my debut season last year’.

Tommy Hewitt said ‘Keeva has huge potential, and I am excited to work and help with her development this season. She is a very talented young player with a fantastic future ahead of her’.

Connacht Cross Country Athletics

Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone, had a great day at the Connaught Cross Country Athletics for the school athletes. All the following qualified for the next stage and the others really enjoyed the experience. Darragh Mulrooney placed fourth in the senior boys; Oran McGranaghan in minor boys; Holly Dehan, Maisie Kilcullen and Amy Boland in minor girls; Ava Hallinan, Lauren Mulrooney, Paula Cuartero and Laura Leonard in junior girls. Well done to all who took part and congratulations and good luck to the qualifies.

The date for the Enniscrone Kilglass GAA Cul Camps 2024 is July 29 to August 2, and registration will open shortly.

Blotto

The numbers drawn in the Enniscrone Combined Football Clubs blotto draw which was held on Sunday, January 28, were 11, 15 and 36. €25 winners were Karl Colleary, Aimee Duffy, Golf Buddies and Tommy Kennedy. The jackpot in the latest draw which was held on Sunday, February 4, in the Ocean Sands Hotel was €8200.

The Local Enhancement Programme Scheme

A new scheme called The Local Enhancement Programme (LEP) has funding available and will provide capital supports essential for the many small community groups and organisations, particularly those who serve disadvantaged areas in rural and urban areas.

There will be a particular focus on small capital works/improvements, and the purchase of equipment for community use. The allocation to Sligo LCDC under the scheme is approximately €141,992.62 in total, to be distributed in the following manner; €118,327.18 to be spread across categories 1 and 2. Category 1 is equipment grants of up to €1000 and Category 2, is capital works grants in excess of €1001 (works should be small in scale with a total budget cost of approximately €5000). €23,665.44 is set aside specifically for ‘Women’s Groups’.

English conversation volunteers

Sligo Leader are looking for volunteers to help people learn/practice English for everyday use. There is no teaching experience required. For further information contact Jonathan at 086 4186259.

West Sligo Young at Heart

West Sligo Young at Heart, Dromore West, started the year moving with Grainne McGowan and chair yoga every Tuesday in January from 11am to 12 noon. Wednesday meetings continue every Wednesday from 10.30 to 12.30 with a good chat and catch up. Walking football has commenced on Mondays from 11am to 12 noon. The club have lots of new activities planned for 2024 such as calligraphy, cooking, willow weaving, sewing and crochet and always tea and a chat.

Easter Egg Hunt and Family Day

Easter is early this year and Tireragh Community Support Ltd are putting the word out in good time. The annual Easter Egg Hunt and Family Day will be held on Easter Sunday, March 31, from 12 noon to 3pm in Kilglass House F26 H685. This is strictly a ticket event only. Walk/Running Track open

Stokane Community Park is leaving the walk/running track lights on every night until 11pm which will enable people to have a good walk in the evenings and with Operation Transformation in full swing, they wish to encourage people to get out and walk/run.

Dream Holiday fundraising draw

Western Gaels Hurling and Camogie Club have embarked on its own adventure to develop the first hurling and camogie home grounds in Co Sligo, and they are giving you an incredible opportunity to pack your bags and travel anywhere in the world all for €25 per ticket as a fundraiser. They are limiting the number of tickets to 7500 so buy early to avoid disappointment. First prize is €8000 travel voucher and €5000 spending money; 2nd €5000 travel voucher and €3000 spending money; 3rd €3000 travel voucher and €1000 spending money and 4th through to 6th prize €1000 cash.

The draw will take place on March 16 and if the tickets are all so before the specified date, they will hold the draw sooner, so keep an eye out for updates.

The Sligo County Fleadh 2024 will be hosted by Tireragh CCE in Easkey from Friday, May 31 to Monday, June 3, 2024.

Bingo in Old Church

Bingo is held in the Old Church, Enniscrone, every Tuesday at 8pm with doors opening at 7pm with free tea and coffee on offer. The proceeds are in aid of Western Gaels Hurling and Camogie Club. All are welcome to come along and support and be in with a chance to win.

Mindspace Outreach

Mindspace Mayo offers a support service to young people (12-25 years) presenting with anything from common concerns (eg. dealing with break-up, exam stress, bullying) to young people with emerging mental health difficulties, such as mild depression and anxiety. The outreach service will run 3 days a week (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) and is based in the Ballina Family Resource Centre. Buggy Buddies

The Buggy Buddies programme with Bernie Finley, in conjunction with Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership, meet on Wednesday mornings at 9.45am for a walk at 10am. The cost is €2 per session and the group meet at the Enniscrone Family Resource Centre. There will be indoor activities in the centre if conditions are too wet. All are welcome to come and join for a walk, a cuppa and chat.

Bingo is held every Friday evening at 8.30pm in Dromore West Community Centre.

GAA lotto

The numbers drawn in the Castleconnor GAA lotto which was held on January 27 last were 12, 19, 25 and 38. There was no jackpot winner. Congratulations to Pauline Boldand who won the €50 lucky dip. The jackpot for the latest draw which was held on February 3, was €20,100.

Castleconnor Handball Club

Congratulations to the six young players who all won bronze medals in the Cumann na mBunscol in Salthill, Galway, on Tuesday, January 30. These juveniles represented Corballa National School and Castleconnor Handball Club. Well done to all the boys; U13 doubles Niall Bourke and Rory McHale; U13 singles Calvin Foody; U11 singles Cian Corcoran; U11 doubles Michael Jones and Lorcan Foody.
