Enniscrone Kilglass GAA Club remember Mattie Coleman

“It is with great sadness that the club learned of the passing of Mattie Coleman, Lacknasleva on Tuesday, February 17. Mattie has dedicated much of his life to our club as a player, coach, administrator, sponsor and supporter.

In his playing days, Mattie was part of our minor championship winning team in 1975 and also played for the Sligo minor team.

As a coach in our club and indeed at county level, he helped foster a love of the game for boys and girls over many decades.

As an administrator, Mattie made an indelible and lasting impact on our club. He served in a number of roles over the years, most notably a decade as chairperson before stepping down in 2007. In that time, Mattie helped drive a major overhaul of the club grounds which included the stands, terracing and fencing that still serves us today.

In all his roles, Mattie gave 110 percent and always went about things in a manner that was underpinned by some of the key traits he possessed; generous, reliable, committed and fiercely loyal.

His son Brian has continued the tradition in becoming a key figure in our club and the next generation have too, with Mattie’s grandsons Ben and Rian Byron part of our nursery programme, of which Mattie was sponsor in recent years, while his son-in-law Brendan has been involved in coaching.

Mattie’s untimely passing is a major lost to our wider community but most of all to his family; to his wife Bernie, daughters Laura, Sarah and Aine, son Brian and the extended Coleman family, we offer our deepest sympathies.

Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.”
