A tractor run was held recently in memory of Tommy Murphy who passed away four years ago. Despite the rain there was a good turn-out on Sunday, August 2, and all funds raised was for Cara Iorrais. There was a function held in Una’s of Blacksod that evening with a raffle and €643 was raised for the Cancer Support Group. Many thanks to everyone for your participation and support.
The Belmullet Festival is on all this week packed full of events for all plus there is a kite making workshop where you’ll trace, colour, build and fly your very own kite which is perfect for little creators looking for some festival fun. The workshop is in Áras Inis Gluaire on Friday, August 14, with sessions at 10am, 11.30am (sensory friendly) and 1pm. Booking is essential, so email belmulletfest@gmail.com to reserve your place.

This year marks 10th anniversary of the passing of John F. Doherty. The organisers would love for his family, friends, teammates, and the wider community to come together to honour his memory, celebrate his passion for football, and remember the joy he brought to so many. The event takes place on Friday, August 14, with kick-off at 6.30pm in Ballybeg Park, Bangor (Bangor Hibs). After the match there are refreshments, music, and a raffle in the Lighthouse Tavern, Inver where we will continue to remember John together. All proceeds from the event will go to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust and North West STOP-Suicide Prevention, two incredible charities that provide vital support to families and individuals when they need it most. Whether you knew John personally or simply want to support two amazing causes, they would love to see you there.
The annual summer fundraising drive is now underway. Ballycroy Community Centre is at the heart of the parish, and your help keeps it operating and continuously improving.The centre is home to the community gym/ newly formed sports hub, Tidy Towns, and social services including Meals on Wheels. Lots of improvement projects have been carried out in the past couple of years and with your help, there's more to come.
All donations made in July and August will be automatically entered into the summer raffle, with some excellent prizes on offer. The registered charity number is 20072292.
The Erris parkrun 468 was held recently and what a glorious morning it was for Ireland's most westerly parkrun. The sunshine provided the perfect backdrop for a fantastic start to the weekend at Cross Lake. On the morning 61 people ran, jogged and walked the beautiful course. They were delighted to welcome 23 first timers to Erris, while 8 participants achieved new personal bests. Representatives from 6 different clubs took part.
Well done to Rachel Deane who completed her 50th parkrun and to Dennis Carey who completed his 25th parkrun milestone. A big hello to Reuben, Pippa, Jack and Ryan who began their parkrun journey in Erris completing their first parkrun. It was fantastic to welcome visitors from Winchester, Wales, Belfast, Birmingham, Wexford, Castlebar, Roscommon, Kerry, Limerick, Dublin and London along with many familiar faces returning to experience the unique welcome and scenery that make Erris parkrun so special.
Deepest sympathies are extended to the family of Michael Monaghan Scunthorpe, Lincoln and formerly of Drum Hill, Clogher, Belmullet; Geraldine Doherty, Carrowteige; Ritchie Lavelle, Enfield, London and formerly of Tohor, Binghamstown; Nora Goonan (née Donohue), Kingsbury, London and formerly of Tallaghan Duff, Geesala; and Sr Mary Murphy (Mary Kate) was a native of Aughleam, Blacksod. May they all rest in peace.
A huge well done to the 7 athletes who travelled to and competed at Carindhu Rowing Club’s Regatta in Co Antrim recently. This was the first regatta the club has travelled to this year, and what a fantastic experience it was. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event. For some of the girls, it was their very first race, but you certainly wouldn’t have known it. They put in unbelievable performances, showed great determination, and gained so much valuable experience. A massive thank you to Katrina Elizabeth and all at Carindhu RC for hosting a fantastic event and making the club feel so welcome.
Erris Utd continue to dominate the Premier Division in the Mayo League with another good win at home against Snugboro recent. From the first whistle, Iorras put Snugboro under unbelievable pressure and should really have had a few more goals. Snugboro could not get out of their own half, as Iorras were so hungry in the tackle, and turned them over time and time again. It was a testament to how tuned in they were from the start and they simply did not give Snugboro a chance. The back four were brilliant as well, working the ball so well, never panicking once, and playing some really good football probably the best football they’ve played all year.
The home side nearly opened the scoring inside two minutes when Cillian Reilly narrowly missed at the back post after excellent wing play from Luke McWilliams. The breakthrough soon arrived, however, as Connor Barrett rose highest to meet another fine delivery from McWilliams on the right and powered home a brilliant header to make it 1-0. The second goal came from Luke McManamon, who got on the end of a long ball from deep inside his own half by Luke McWilliams. After the ball bounced up kindly, McManamon showed great strength and timing to head past the advancing Snugboro goalkeeper and double the lead. McWilliams then turned scorer himself, with an attempted cross from his weaker left foot somehow finding the top-left corner to make it 3-0 and give Iorras complete control. Jamie Reilly added a fourth on 41 minutes with a superb left-footed strike that was still rising as it hit the net, sending Iorras in 4-0 up at the break.
Snugboro tried to mount a comeback after the interval and pulled one back from the penalty spot on 68 minutes. However, Iorras responded well, making a series of changes to freshen things up all over the park and see out the contest in strong fashion. The scoring was rounded off on 83 minutes when Keelan Barrett produced some excellent solo work to finish clinically and make it 5-1. Snugboro did manage a late second, also from the penalty spot in the 90th minute, but it was only a consolation on a night when Iorras deservedly took all three points.
The waiting is finally over, congratulations to Ryan and all the Mayo panel and management on a wonderful achievement and a very emotional moment in history that will stay for ever and a-day in peoples memory. Congratulations also to Ryan on his Man-of-Match award and Player of the Season recognition.
There was no winner of this week’s Kiltane GAA Club lotto jackpot of €5,900 with the two €50 winners being Martin Harrington, Geesala and Martin Lynskey, Briska while Joe Mangan, Roy and Martin Gaughan, Northampton both won €25s. The two online winners were Bernie Cafferkey, Attycunnane €50 and Joanne Martin, Bangor €25.

Heartiest congratulations from the club to Ryan O’Donoghue, Seamus Howard and the Mayo team, extended panel and management on a truly outstanding achievement in winning the All Ireland final. It has brought so much unprecedented excitement, joy and happiness to so many people, never ever to be forgotten.

C.L.G Cill Chomain Annual 10km/5km run/walk/ jog will now be held on Sunday, August 23, at 4pm, from Ballinaboy to the Anglers Rest. Entry fee is €10 for adults and children are free. Proceeds will go to North West STOP-Suicide Prevention. There will be refreshments in Healy’s after and music with Oisín Ó Donnell.
Just 5 weeks until the 26/27 season of darts in Erris kicks off with the Michelle Gaughan Memorial on Sunday, September 13, in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel with more information on the events and format nearer the time. All proceeds from this year’s event are in aid of Glencastle NS.
