Local Notes: Preparations continue for Claremorris Show

Claremorris Show 

Plans continue apace on all fronts in the build-up to the 104th Claremorris Show, fixed for the August Bank Holiday - Sunday, August 4. 

The show schedule and entry details are now available at numerous locations or from Show Secretary Maureen Finnerty at 087-9241450 or email claremorrisagshow@yahoo.ie. A small amount of trade stand space is still available.

An important meeting of the Claremorris Show Committee to finalise plans for this year's event will be held in the Western Hotel this Friday, July 19, at 8pm - this will be followed by the Show launch at 8.30pm at the same venue. All are welcome.

Cardiac screening 

Claremorris South Responder Group have teamed up with the Dillion Quirke Foundation and Claremorris GAA Club to cardiac screen 182 children (the highest amount ever screened in Ireland) free of charge.

Dillion Quirke (24) catapulted through the hurling ranks from underage to the Tipperary senior hurling team. He died after collapsing while captaining Clonoulty Rossmore against Kilruane MacDonaghs, during a county senior hurling championship match at Semple Stadium, Thurles in 2022.

The Foundation are screening from August 6 to August 9. On August 8, Dan (Dillion's father) will be in Claremorris with a few Mayo players, including Saoirse Lally who was recently diagnosed with a cardiac issue through the same screening.

Congratulations 

Well done to Dana Carney, a student of Mount Saint Michael Secondary School, who won a European Regional Winner Award for her participation in Teen-Turn thanks to her project, ‘Secure Hands’. Congratulations, Dana!

Champions 

Congratulations to the Claremorris under-16 boys team who defeated Ballinrobe in the South Mayo A Championship Final recently. The final scoreline was 6-15 to 3-7. 

Congratulations are also extended to Claremorris’ Minor A side who claimed the inaugural Austin Garvin Memorial Cup. They defeated The Neale in the South Mayo Minor A Final on a scoreline of 2-19 to 2-9.

Good cause 

Gilligan's Bar have announced that they will save cans with the Re-turn logos and donate all the monies raised to local charities in Claremorris. First up they are saving to buy a defibrillator for outside the pub. Their first loot of cans came to a sum of €74.25. They thanked SuperValu Claremorris for jumping on board and helping out with this venture.

Every Little Helps 

Muire Gan Smál Primary School said a big thank you to Susan and all in Tesco Claremorris for €565 sponsorship from the Blue Token Collection. The school thanked their pupils, parents and staff for giving them their blue tokens over the last few weeks.

Claremorris GAA 50/50 Lotto 

Congratulations to Emma, Jimmy and Sandra on winning the recent Claremorris GAA 50/50 Lotto. They picked up their prize of €810.

Claremorris AFC 50/50 Lotto 

Congratulations to Deirdre Bracken on winning the recent Claremorris AFC 50/50 Lotto. Deirdre picked up her prize of €435.

5k Fun Run 

A 5k Fun Run will take place in Clare Lake, Claremorris, on Sunday, July 28, at 6pm. The event is in association with Garrymore GAA’s Quid Game fundraiser. Pay online or at the gate - €10 individually or €20 for family.

Handball initiative 

As part of Mayo GAA Handball Association’s Strategic Plan, Claremorris Mothers & Others group commenced their six-week programme recently under the tuition of Cuileann Bourke. Best of luck to all and enjoy the next few weeks!

Over the line 

Well done to Claremorris Ultimate Kickboxing Club who competed at the Championship in Athlone recently. A special well done to Jason Huane who competed in his sixth Irish final and claimed his first triumph. It was said that “he’s an inspiration to everyone to keep following their dreams and not give up".

Recent death

Helena Bernadette of Rathnacreeva, Ballyglass, Claremorris - better known as Bernie - recently passed away peacefully at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar, surrounded by her loving family. 

Donaghmore Ashbourne GAA paid tribute to the ‘friendly’ Bernie by saying: “She was a frequent visitor to the club and was always elegantly dressed. We send our support and condolences to PJ, Liz Padraig and indeed the large Durkan family at this tough time.” 

May she rest in peace.

Claremorris Tennis Club 

Claremorris Tennis Club recently celebrated their annual Mona McGarry tournament. Congratulations to all the winners and a big thanks was sent to Mona for the fabulous prizes.

The tennis club will host a free programme for adults and children with a physical or learning disability. Spaces are available for the weeks of August 5 to August 8, August 12 to August 16 and August 19 to August 23. Contact Suzanne on 085-8887332 for bookings.

10,000km trip to Knock Airport 

Ireland West Airport Knock welcomed two aircrafts that travelled from East Asia to its EirTrade facility recently. The Eva Air Airbus A330 landed in the West of Ireland after a 10,000km journey from Taipei - Taiwan's capital city, while the airport welcomed the world's largest twinjet to Mayo last month. Boeing 777, commonly referred to as the 'Triple Seven', also arrived into Knock from Taipei.

South Mayo Euros

Well done to everyone who took part in Garrymore GAA’s Parish Soccer Tournament last weekend. Ten parishes went head to head with teams from Annefield, Pulbawn, Seefin, Garrymore, Ballyglass, Frenchgrove/Ballyheeragh, Roundfort/Robeen, Crossboyne, Farmhill and Claremorris competing.

Connacht call-up

Everybody at Claremorris Colts RFC congratulated Michael Smyth on making the Connacht Rugby under-19 male squad for this summer's training programme and Interpro series. Well done, Michael!

Knock Youth Ministry Camp 

Knock Youth Ministry hold a number of summer camps each year and this year they have added a new camp for girls in 5th and 6th class. Their aim in creating this camp was to provide a safe and fun space for these girls to come together and explore the many ways that creativity and togetherness can bring joy - no medals/awards necessary. Celebrating 50 Years 

Flynn's Pharmacy are celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Since 1974, the pharmacy has been a cornerstone of the Claremorris community. 

From Gerry and Mary Flynn's humble beginnings to its current generation with Jimmy and a bright future with Gillian and Susan, their family pharmacy is ready for the next half-century. They thanked all their customers for their loyalty and friendship over the past 50 years and for being a part of their journey.

Charity event 

On Friday, July 19, Florrie Campbell, (Lady Captain at Claremorris Golf Club) is hosting the 'Tee Off for Charity' golf tournament in aid of Daisy Lodge, Cong. She warmly invites you to join the club for a day of golf, camaraderie, and charity. The event is open to members and visitors, with a €25 entry fee. Every single euro raised will go directly to Daisy Lodge.

Wedding Bells 

Congratulations to Claremorris LGFA player Síle Hughes and Lukas Streciwilk who recently celebrated their wedding. They are wished a long and happy married life together.
