Cathal has now entered the 4th week of his 2200km charity walk The Via Francigena to Rome and has visited the Cathedrals of Laon and Reims. He is now walking through the Grand-Est Region of France. The Railway Players Variety and Drama Group in collaboration with Flare Productions and Siamsa Sráide are planning Musical Theatre Workshops which will take place during the week before Siamsa Sráide, July 29 to August 2, from 10am to 1pm. A week of song, dance and drama will culminate in a performance which will be one of the many highlights of the 40th anniversary of Siamsa Sráide. The annual Scoil Cheoil Siamsa will take place during the week before Siamsa Sráide, from July 29 to August 2. Music, singing, dancing and conversational Irish classes will take place between 4 and 7pm in the Primary School in Swinford (Scoil Muire agus Treasa). Instruments include banjo, bodhrán, button accordion, concertina, fiddle, flute, guitar, tin whistle, harp and keyboard. Availability of classes depends on level of interest. Classes last an hour and the cost for the week is €35. Dancing with Gráinne Kelly and comhrá gaeilge (conversational Irish) will be free in collaboration with Swinford/Killasser LGFA. Several group performance sessions will be held during the week. Participants are encouraged to book as soon as possible to facilitate timetabling. East Mayo Anglers are holding the yearly Youth Angling Event on July 24 from 6-8pm. The event is aimed at encouraging young girls and boys to take up salmon and trout fishing as a sport or hobby. Young anglers attending will have an opportunity to try different fishing methods including, fly casting, spin fishing, worm fishing, and bubble and fly fishing. Last year turned out to be a great success, and as numbers will be limited for safety reasons early booking is advised.
The numbers drawn in the Swinford Community Lotto draw held on July 1, were 3, 7, 8 and 19. There was no jackpot winner. €70 vouchers were won by Connie Hanley, Killasser and Catherine Harkin, Derryronane; €35 was won by Stephen McHale, c/o P Horkan’s. The jackpot in the latest draw was now €14,800.
Swinford Golf Club's charity golf event for Vision Ireland, generously sponsored by Platt and Reilly, was a resounding success on Saturday, June 29, raising substantial funds for a worthy cause. Gearoid Brady and Marty Munnelly topped the men's leaderboard with a stellar 46 points on a countback, closely followed by Raymond Horkan and Tom Horkan in second place, and James Irwin paired with Phillip Irwin Jr in third, both teams also scoring 46 points.
In the ladies' division, Marian Maloney and Kathleen Foy led the field with 45 points.
Special achievements were recognised with Annie McNeela driving the longest ball among the ladies, while Mary Horkan claimed the closest to the pin accolade. Among the gentlemen, James Irwin hit the longest drive and Michael Carroll was nearest to the pin.
The club extends its gratitude to Platt and Reilly for their generous support, which was instrumental in the success of the event. The partnership not only enhanced the competition but also significantly contributed to the fundraising efforts. Swinford Golf Club also acknowledges those who could not attend but supported the charity through donations.
On Sunday, June 30, Swinford hosted a 9-hole Stableford competition for both gents and ladies. In the men’s category, Gerard O’Keefe topped the leaderboard with a commendable score of 23 points, followed by Declan Munnelly, who tallied 19 points. Liam Healy and Jim O'Donnell also performed admirably, both scoring 19 points. On the women’s side, Margaret McNicholas led the field with a score of 24 points, securing a standout victory. Adrienne Ring followed with a solid 20 points, while Breege Spain rounded out the top three with 17 points.

The annual Killasser Cemetery Mass will take place on August 14, on the eve of the Feast of the Assumption. Mass will be celebrated in Meelick Cemetery on Sunday, August 4, at 9am, Kilconduff Cemetery on Monday, August 5, at 6.30pm and Midfield Cemetery on Thursday, August 15, at 7pm.

The rescheduled Swinford Indoor Market will take place on Saturday, July 13, in Swinford Cultural Centre, running from 10.30am to 3pm. A variety of products, such as locally sourced produce, crafts, and unique items will be on offer on the day. Cácaí Acla will be offering teas, coffees, and their delightful bakes at the market, enhancing the overall visitor experience.

The death took place on June 28 at Naas General Hospital of Joe (PJ) Flannery, late of Monasteraden. He was brother of Kathleen Keeley, Gurteen. Congratulations and well done to Fr John Doherty, Charlestown, who celebrated sixty five years of ordination. A Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated on Sunday, June 30, in Charlestown Church. Fr. John was a former parish priest in Gurteen for many years and was held in high esteem in the parish.
The wedding took place at St Patrick's Church, Gurteen, on Saturday, June 22, of Elaine O'Grady, Gurteen and Darren McMorrow, Knockvicar. Chief celebrant was Fr Frank O'Grady, uncle of the bride. The reception was later held at the Castlecourt Hotel Westport. Elaine and Darren are wished a long and happy married life together.
