Leila Hughes is part of Castleconnor GAA U7 team and she goes to Corballa NS and is a little superhero. Leila was born with a rare gene disorder, which can cause bone marrow failure. She survived her first year of life thanks to amazing donors who gave blood, platelets and her super hero who donated his bone marrow. Leila is now living life to the fullest thanks to these amazing people. Her transplant was a success and she is now healthy and full of life.
Last week Leila’s dad Steve swam from Enniscrone to Kilcummin (approximately 10km) to raise awareness for the need for more donors like those who gave Leila the gift of life. Their hope is that other families can be as lucky as they were. Being a donor saves lives. Not everyone can become a donor for various reasons and therefore Leila’s family decided to start a fundraiser for Jack and Jill Children’s Charity in addition to the awareness campaign.
Leila required 24 hour care when she was a baby. Jack and Jill provided the family with funding for nursing support in their home. This meant that Leila could be at home with her family rather thank in hospital hours way from home and away from so many people who love her. The nursing support is completely flexible to each family. Leila’s family mostly used their hours at night so they could sleep but sometimes they used them for daytime support so they could give their other 2 children much needed attention during a time that was extremely difficult for them also.
In 2024, Jack and Jill supported 539 families across Ireland with in-home nursing care and respite support. By supporting their fundraiser your money will help a struggling family to care for their child at home. idonate Jack and Jill Foundation Swim for Leila.
Stacey and Steve extend thanks to everyone for their support and they would like people to spread the word and help other families who are struggling.
