Local Notes: New Year's Day Swim at Enniscrone Pier.

What a way to start the New Year. Hundreds of people braved the cold waters as the sun shone at Enniscrone Pier on Wednesday, January 1.
The death took place of Mollie Tuffy, Fernhill, Culleens, Co Sligo and formerly of the Hilltop, Culleens, peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by her loving husband Tommy Joe, father Patrick, mother Ann and brother Padraig. Mollie will be deeply regretted by her son Pat, daughters Ann, daughter-in-law Jacinta, son-in-law Edward, brother-in-law Paul Tuffy, sister-in-law Bridie Tuffy, sister-in-law Ann Tully, grandchildren Ryan, Danielle and Darragh, great-grandchild Tyler, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends.
Mollies remains reposed at Sweeney’s Funeral Home, Dromore West on Thursday, January 2, from 4pm with removal at 7pm to the Church of the Holy Family, Kilglass. Her funeral Mass was held on Friday, January 3 at 12 noon with burial afterwards in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Kilglass. May Mollie rest in peace.
Enniscrone Golf Club express their sadness at the passing of Mollie Tuffy, who was an esteemed and honoured member of the club. Mollie was Lady Captain in 1979, Lady President from 1983-1991 and an Honorary Life Member.
Lady Captain Elaine Doherty said ‘Mollie was a very generous and a valued contributor to the early development of Enniscrone Golf Club. She brought leadership and grace to her roles as Lady Captain and Lady President. Mollie was awarded Honorary Life Membership in 2022 as an acknowledgement of over 50 years contribution and dedication to golf at Enniscrone. May she now enjoy her eternal rest’.
The numbers drawn in the weekly Eoghan Rua Ladies lotto which was held on December 23, were 12, 14, 23 and 31. The €30 consolation prizewinners were Leah Weir, Annette Queenan, Tommy Lavelle Snr, Willie McGinley and Liam Sheridan. €50 voucher winners were Laura, Enna and Luke McGowan, and Joan and Stuart O’Connor.
The numbers drawn on December 30 were 1, 28, 32 and 35. Consolation winners of €30 were Caitriona Cavanagh, PP Battle and D Mahony, George Gibson, Mary McHugh and Chloe Cawley. €50 vouchers were won by Brian Taylor, and Declan and Clare Gordon.
The jackpot in the latest draw, which was held on January 6 was €18,300. The club extend thanks to everyone for their support in 2024 and look forward to 2025.

The Western Gaels Hurling and Camogie Club extended thanks to everyone who came out to mark the clubs 25th anniversary on Sunday, December 29. They raised €2060 for two very important charities – Northwest Stop and North West Hospice. The club thank Gabriel Healy, a founding member of the club who presented Player of the Match to Barry Keenan and ‘Greatest Comeback Award’ to Derek O’Brien; to Enniscrone Kilglass GAA club for the use of the grounds at Quigabar and to the Harbour Bar for the events afterwards.
2024 was a good year for the senior team. They were triumphant in the JBG Security Ltd West Division Senior Spring league and also won promotion to Division for next season. They were presented with their Spring League winners medals on Friday, December 27 last from Club Vice-President PJ Kavanagh. The club congratulate all the players and their management team of Enda Gilvarry, John Paul Carden and Derry O’Sullivan on a successful 2024.
The U18 team received their winners medals for their success in the Shane Quigley Financial Advisor New Ireland U18B1 Football Championship Shield Final last August. Ciaran O’Dowd, club senior player of the year and Sligo county panel member presented the medals.
Congratulations are extended to the U17 team who received their winners medals following their success in the Shane Quigley Financial Advisor New Ireland U17B1 Football Cup Final at the end of September. They were also presented by Ciaran O’Dowd.
At the presentation evening Tommy Quinn was named Young Player of the Year 2024 and he was presented with the Joe McManus Memorial Shield by Tom McManus. Ciaran O’Dowd was named Player of the Year 2024 and he received his award from Club Chairman Declan Rouse. John and Pat McManus were induced into the Hall of Fame and received their awards from Mixie Jacob of Jacobs Service Station sponsor.
Clair Beglin Duffy was named Club Person of the Year 2024 for her outstanding contribution to the club in her role of treasurer. She has been front and centre of the many fundraising initiatives ran in recent years to get the clubhouse and grounds in pristine condition all the while managing the day to day finances. Clair was presented with her award from Brian Coleman of Coleman Electronics who sponsor the award.
Outscape is facilitating the development of a County Outdoor Recreation Plan for county Sligo in partnership with key county outdoor recreation stakeholders. Key stakeholders include the public, activity providers, educators, outdoor recreation clubs, the land-owning community, and visitors to the county. A public meeting where you can contribute to steering county Sligo’s outdoor recreation priorities will be held in the West Sligo Family Resource Centre, Enniscrone, on Monday, January 13, from 7 to 8.30pm. One will be held in Tubbercurry on Tuesday, January 14, from 3.30pm to 5pm and in Sligo Park Hotel, Sligo on from 7 to 8.30pm. You are requested to register your interest to attend the event.
Easkey/St Farnans Hurling Club extend Happy New Year to all. They said ‘it is a time to reflect on another great year… to learn from the tough times, to remember and enjoy all the good times, and to think of all the special people who have been a part of our journey. Thank you to all our supporters and sponsors, and to all our friends near and far’.
The slipway was cleared, the sea was lovely and calm, the sun shone and they even got a rainbow as the people of Easkey showed once again what an amazing community they are living in. Together they raised €3010 and Easkey Enhancement Association thank everyone who contributed in any way to make the day such a wonderful event especially all the people who donated whiskey and nibbles, Blair Feeney for the hamper of goodies, the Swimming Women who bring the homebakes, the fun and the magic to any event they put their mind to, but most especially to Orlagh Clarke who continues to inspire everyone with her positive outlook, her generosity and her passion and commitment to Easkey. All proceeds raised on Wednesday will be shared with Easkey Enhancement Association and SHOUT (Sligo Hospital Oncology Unit).
Easkey Enhancement Association wishes everyone a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year, and they are looking forward to lots more exciting projects in 2025.
The Indoor Food and Craft Market is held in the Old Church, Main Street, Enniscrone, every Saturday from 11am to 3pm, featuring a wide range of handmade gifts, jewellery, paintings, plants and flowers, home baking, vegetables, fresh fish, bric a brac and local crafts. As 2024 drew to a close, Castleconnor GAA Club remembered all those who lost loved ones throughout the year. They remembered those who passed away in December and offered their condolences to the family of Teresa Fell nee Barrins, who with her husband Jim and their business Clare Hardware were generous sponsors of their senior team in the 90’s, to the family of John O’Boyle who played with the club in the 80’s alongside his brother Michael and to the family of Celine Barrins nee Maloney whose late husband Christy and son Rory played with the club and her brother Ted who played and served as chairman in the 80’s. May they all rest in peace.
Razorbacks Basketball Club is a socia-ball for teen girls and a 6 week programme for non-basketball members will commence in Castleconnor Community Centre on Thursday, January 9, from 7-8pm for girls aged between 13-17. The Castleconnor First Responder Group is raising funds to purchase additional defibrillators and training equipment, ensuring volunteers are ready for incidents such as chest pains, strokes, and cardiac arrests within the community.
Upon receiving a call, the National Ambulance Service will immediately notify the First Responders, who will provide crucial support, CPR, and defibrillation as needed until the ambulance arrives.
