St Patrick’s Day Parade

Large crowds attended the St Patrick’s Day parade in Kiltimagh which was held at the earlier time of 1pm to accommodate the football fans who wanted to go to the Mayo v Derry match in Castlebar. The lovely spring sunshine added to the enjoyment of the spectators who lined the streets to watch what many said was one of the best attended parades in recent times. The theme was ‘Through the Generations’ so it was fitting that four generations of the McNicholas family from Treenagleragh led by Rosaleen, who celebrated her 100th Birthday last September, had the honour of leading the parade alongside her son Anthony, her granddaughter Donna Maria and great granddaughter Shannon Corless.

Various aspects of Irish life down through the years were well represented by the different groups, and spectators were well informed of their significance by the two MCs Gerry King and Seamus Corry.

The adjudicators were Frankie Forde Waldron, Castlebar Mags O’Connell of Mayo Co Council and Tom Jordan, Dublin, originally from Kiltimagh. The overall winners were the Kiltimagh Scouts who were presented with the Brendan Killeen Memorial Cup and a €1,000 prize. Second prize of €600 went to Bohola National School with their Favourite Cartoon Characters, under the direction of Teresa Mulligan, and the TY students from St Louis Community School with their Barbi themed float took the third prize of €200.

The inaugural winner of the Mary Diamond Perpetual Cup was Tigh na Leanai with a very fitting and colourful float on Sunflowers in support of Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation. Marita Shannon was presented with the cup by Ann Moran, chairperson of Kiltimagh Tourism Festivals.

The late Mary B McNicholas

Mary Beatrice McNicholas, Kiltimagh, who died as a result of a fire at her home in Cordarragh on March 11, was a well-known and much loved lady in the local community and beyond. News of her tragic death was greeted with a huge sense of shock and great sadness by all who had the pleasure of knowing her over the years.

Born and reared in nearby Treenagleragh, Mary B as she was affectionately known trained as a nurse in England before returning to Ireland where she spent her working life at St Mary’s Hospital in Dublin. When she retired she came back to live in Kiltimagh where she had family and many friends.

In her early 90s she was very happy and content to be able to live in her own home where she was well cared for and with her brother Ollie right next door. She was a kind and gentle lady who will be missed, especially by her family members and close friends and neighbours.

Predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Mary Ellen McNicholas, brothers Colm and Joe, and sisters Bernadette and Teresa, she was the beloved sister of Ollie, Sean, Ann, Margaret and Verona. Mary B will also be sadly missed by her nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Reposing was in O’Hora’s Funeral Home last Monday evening with removal afterwards to the Church of the Holy Family where her Funeral Mass was celebrated the next day. Afterwards she was laid to rest in Kilkinure Cemetery. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

Billy was involved in many organisations in the parish namely the Kiltimagh Fire Brigade, the St Vincent de Paul and indeed in anything that would make life that bit easier for people. He was generous with his time and went to Lourdes many times to help those with special needs and was a great neighbour and friend.

He worked with Cleary’s Garage for many years delivering spare parts to people around the county, many of whom paid special tributes to him on social media last week. But above all else Billy was a caring and loving father to his family who will sorely miss him long in the future.
