Photographic collection

Continuing the celebrations of the Belmullet bicentennial, Áras Inis Gluaire will host a collection of historical photographs by the late JJ Leonard at 8pm on Friday, July 5th, with a talk by his grandson Anthony Leonard.

These are fascinating photographs dating from the early 1990s and this launch is not to be missed. Take a trip down memory lane and imagine the Erris of old with these incredible and culturally important images.

JJ Leonard had a base in Belmullet in the early 1900s and captured events, scenery, families and history, thus giving us a feel for life in Belmullet, Erris and wider North Mayo area back then.

The exhibition will continue throughout July and August.

This is a big year for Belmullet and its people at home and abroad as they celebrate the town's 200th birthday.

Thank you to all at Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet for making this exhibition possible.

Erris United News

Erris Utd/Iorras Aontaithe National School Comórtas 2024 was held on Monday, June 10th, and thankfully the rain stayed away. Ten schools from all around Erris participated in the event and congratulations to Corclough National School on winning the cup and to Doohoma National School on winning the shield.

There was a sudden death penalty shootout between Belmullet and Corclough national schools on who would reach the final of the cup.

Many thanks to all the schools, teachers, coaches and students for making the annual event very enjoyable for all.

Thanks to Nigel Naughton, FAI Football Development Officer, for overseeing the event and to club chairperson Mary Teresa Barrett and her hard-working assistants for helping with refreshments. Thanks also to the games referees, Des O’Connor, Seamus O’Malley, Padraic Reilly, and Cillían Flannery.

Congratulations to the Erris Utd U13 (A) squad and management on becoming Division 1 champions away to Knock/Kiltimagh recently after a solid 5-3 win, and keeping their unbeaten run intact. Congratulations to all the boys and girls on a brilliant season and to the management team of John, Brendan and Anthony. Thanks again to all the parents for their constant support for the team and the club, well done everyone!

Congratulations also to Iorras U13 (B) squad on becoming Division 3 champions following a superb unbeaten run in the league!

Well done to the players and to their managers John, Aidan and Kevin for all their hard work and dedication all season, and of course to all the parents who got them to training and all those away games and back safely!

Iorras senior side suffered their first league defeat since their return to the Mayo League last year with a 2-1 loss to Killala.

Stephen Morrell opened the scoring for Killala in first-half injury time as he hit his third goal of the season and youngster Tommy Muldoon added a second with 20 minutes remaining as he chipped the Iorras keeper from a tricky angle. Iorras pulled a goal back just two minutes later through Owen McHale but they weren’t able to find an equaliser as Killala overtook them at the top of League One.

Celebratory event

There was a beautiful event in S.N Dhumha Thuama recently as they celebrated old-fashioned singing and the great work being done by Múinteoir Síle under the Strengthening Scheme (Ealaín na Gaeltachta with support from Irish Irish).

The Duhama Tuama children put on an excellent concert for everyone on the day.

Gaeilge Iorrais would like to thank the school staff, Múinteoir Síle and, of course, the school children for providing this special event.

Art classes

There were art classes in the Old School in Ceathrú Taidhg every Wednesday and classes in the Hall on Eachleim every Thursday for the past four weeks.

Gaeilge Iorrais were very happy with the children who were with them at these classes; they were all incredible in terms of their ability in art and the use of the Irish language. Good for you all!

The organisers were lucky to have excellent teachers as well to provide these classes.

Gaeilge Iorrais would like to sincerely thank everyone who took part in the art classes, especially the teachers Máire and Caitlín for sharing their wealth of knowledge with the children. Thanks also to Treasa Ní Ghearraigh (Manager of Comhar Dún Chaocháin Teo) and Tina Nic Eafartaigh (Manager of CFID) for their support in running these classes in the Old School and Halla Naomh Brendáin.

Gaeilge Iorrais hope to be back again with these beautiful classes!
