Local Notes: Five parishioners from Easkey and Rathlee received their Golden Jubilee Awards from the PTAA.

The annual ‘Culleens Carnival Country Dance’, is taking place on Saturday, August 24, in The Hilltop and Off Licence, Culleens. There will be live music with Family Affair, a band known for bringing the house down with their lively performances. Admission is €10 and all proceeds go towards the new Kilglass Digital Hub and Community Centre. There will be a raffle on the night with some fantastic spot prizes, so bring your friends, family and dancing shoes for a community night to remember.
Enniscrone Kilglass Intermediate team put in a gallant effort against Drumcliffe/Rosses Point in the Fureys Coaches senior football league division two final on Saturday, August 10 in Kilcoyne Park, Tubbercurry. Large support from both sides travelled for the game.
The lads started well and got the first score on the board. The opposition were in front by a point on 14 minutes when their full forward suffered a serious injury and was stretchered off. Enniscrone Kilglass GAA club wish him well in his recovery.
Brian Duffy levelled the score as they were heading for the break but Drumcliffe/Rosses Point added two points in injury time to leave the score 0-5 to 0-3 at half time.
The second half saw Drumcliffe/Rosses Point extend their lead despite some fine scores from the Enniscrone lads and were ahead by five points with minutes to go.
Ciaran O’Dowd narrowly missed a goal opportunity with 5 minutes on the clock before Gavin Duffy and Nathan Hannon added a point each just inside the 60 minutes. Excitement and dismay rang around the grounds as Ciaran O’Dowd scored the goal to level the match deep into injury time at 0-13 to 1-10, and they headed for extra time.
The extra time period saw Drumcliffe/Rosses Point score a goal in each half as their strength and experience came to the fore to close out the game on a scoreline of 2-18 to 1-11. However, it was a great display from the boys in black and amber and a credit to all their efforts all year. Congratulations is extended to them all on reaching the final of division two and also winning promotion for next year.
Well done to the management team of Enda Gilvarry, John Paul Carden and Derry O’Sullivan, along with Darragh Murphy on stats and physio Grace Martin who have guided and supported the team all year. The team are back in action again at the weekend when they play St Patrick’s in their first game of the championship. Time and venue to be confirmed.

For individuals who may not feel completely confident in their drawing abilities, collage is a great way from them to express themselves creatively without the pressure of making a realistic drawing. The death took place of John Melvin, Curradrish Road, Castlebar, formerly of Lacken, Enniscrone, Co Sligo. John was a retired member of An Garda Siochana, Castlebar, and he died peacefully in the loving care of the staff in the Carra Suite, Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar, surrounded by his loving family on August 10.
John was predeceased by his parents John and Mary, brother Martin and sister Mary (Hennessy). He will be sadly missed and remembered with love by his heartbroken wife Teresa of fifty years, his sons Shane and Damian, daughter-in-law Laragh, brothers Padraig, Michael (Lacken, Enniscrone), Jerry (Whitegate, Cork), Eamon (Gort, Co Galway), and Brendan (Salthill, Galway), sister Chris Kilgannon (Frankford, Enniscrone), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, friends and neighbours.
John reposed in Coady’s Funeral Home, Castlebar, on Monday evening from 5pm with removal at 7pm to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar. Requiem Mass was held on Tuesday afternoon at 1pm and he was laid to rest afterwards in Castlebar New Cemetery. May he rest in peace.
