At the Naughton Foundation Scholarship awards held at Trinity Business School, Trinity College Dublin on October 12, were School Rep Stephen Durkan, Martin and Carmel Naughton, winning scholar Eoghan Durkan, St Muredach’s College Ballina, and An Taoiseach Simon Harris TD.

‘Witch Craft’ workshop

Book launch

John Flynn will launch and read from his new book of poems 'Àll My Love Until the End of Time' on Saturday, October 26, at 5pm, in Abhainn Studio, Pier Road, Enniscrone. The poems were written in the year following Chris Flynn’s unexpected death by suicide and the book is dedicated to his memory and to all families who have been bereaved in this manner. Books will cost €20 and proceeds will go to support the work of Pieta in assisting those struggling with self-harm and suicidal thoughts and families who have lost loved ones to suicide.

Exciting swimming programmes at Waterpoint

Waterpoint have three exciting programmes coming up in October, in partnership with Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership and Swim Ireland. Swimmin’ Women Midlife Programme starts today, Tuesday, October 22 for 6 weeks at 11am, costing €30. This is a mix of swimming and aqua aerobics for women. He Swims is swimming and aqua fit classes for men, and the programme commences on Thursday, October 24, from 12 noon to 1pm. The six week course costs €30.

Artistic Swimming for children aged 8-12 and Aqua Moves for girls aged 13+ commenced on October 21 with the artistic swimming from 4-5pm and aquamoves from 5-6pm. To book contact Waterpoint, Enniscrone at 096 36999.

Healthy Food Made Easy

Healthy Food Made Easy is a fun course where people will learn how to cook healthy meals on a budget. It is commencing on November 6 at 10am in the Family Resource Centre, Enniscrone. This course is usually run over 6 sessions (2.5 hrs). The emphasis throughout the course is on group learning and talking rather than formal teaching.

Learn how to prepare, cook and taste healthy recipes; learn about healthy eating; get trips on food shopping; plan meals on a budget; relaxed and fun approach; and it is suitable for all ages and abilities. The late Regina McKenna nee Lynott

The death took place peacefully in St Ann’s Hospice, on October 5, of Regina Mary McKenna nee Lynott, aged 79 years, whilst fortified by the Rites of Holy Mother Church and formerly of Enniscrone, and Sale, Cheshire. She was the dearly loved and adored mum of Regina, Siobhan and Thomas, very precious nana of Shannon, Adam, Michael-John, Maddy, Leila and Joel and dearest great nana of Conan and Irla. She was a dear sister of Mary, Veronica and Ignatius and also a much loved auntie and mother-in-law of Mickey, Jill and Darryl. Regina will also be sadly missed by all her family and friends especially Margaret, Sylvester, Martina and Lucy.

Evening reception took place at St Ann’s RC Church, 1043 Chester Road, Steretford, Manchester on Wednesday, October 16, last at 7pm. Requiem Mass was held on Thursday, October 12, at 12 noon followed by burial in Dunham Lawn Cemetery. May she rest in peace.

Easkey Enhancement Association meeting

Easkey Enhancement Association have been working with Colaiste Iascaigh and MSLETB to secure a 25 year lease on the field opposite the school. They held a meeting on Monday, October 14, to discuss this much needed development which will include a playground, a sensory garden, a running track and a multi purpose all weather pitch with its own car park facilities.

This facility will benefit all sections of the community, a much longed for playground for the young children and families, a sensory garden for everyone to enjoy, and the sporting element will benefit all the clubs in the parish and provide opportunity for new clubs to get established. The track will have full lighting and provide a safe area to run and walk especially in the darker evenings. These plans have been drawn up and are ready to be submitted for planning approval.

Easkey Enhancement Association are hoping that, with the support of the community, the development of the field will be implemented on a phased basis. Phase 1 will be to obtain planning and to apply for CLAR funding for the development of the car park. Phase 2 will be the playground and sensory park. EFA intend to apply for this funding through Sligo Leader Partnership. They will fund 75% of the project with the community of Easkey funding the remaining 25%. The final phase will be the development of the pitch and running track.

To oversee the development of this exciting facility the group are forming a committee and asking key organisations and groups in Easkey to join with EFA and lead out on a fundraising plan to achieve this much needed facility for the community of Easkey.

Scary Woods Walk at Kilglass House and Woodland

Go along if you are brave enough to Kilglass House and Woodland F26H685 on Thursday, October 31 from 10am to 2pm for the Scary Woods Walk. Entry is €2 per person. Why not dress up and get into the Halloween spirit and be prepared for a few spooky surprises along the way. It is not recommended for very small children, however, for children aged 0-5 years, the woods will be open from 9am to 10am and 2-3pm with no hidden surprises, just artwork/props. So feel free to bring them along between those times if you feel they are too young for the Scary Woods Walk.

The numbers drawn in the Enniscrone combined football clubs blotto draw which was held on Sunday, October 13, were 2, 7, and 27. The €25 prizewinners were Barry O’Donnell, Bridget O’Hara, Rachel Colleary and Frank Melvin. The jackpot in the latest draw which was held on Sunday, October 20, was €8600.

Natalie’s Wishes Cake Sale

It’s that time of year again and Natalie’s Wishes Cake Sale will be held on October 25, from 10am to 2pm in The Old Church, Enniscrone. All proceeds will go towards the Santa Experience in Kilglass on December 1, which to date has been a phenomenal success and it’s all thanks to the kind donations of cakes and treats etc and the continuous support over the last number of years. The organisers extends thanks to all who help and support this cause in keeping Natalie’s memory alive. 

Rosary in Graveyard

Rosary will be held in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Kilglass, on Sunday afternoon, November 3, at 3pm. The clergy invite all to join them to pray for loved ones who have died.

Special Mass

A special Mass will be held on Friday, November 8, in Enniscrone Church to remember all those who have passed away during the past year in the parish. A list of names of those who died will be read out and each family will be invited to carry a candle forward to the altar (candles will be provided). Those who have died in the parish during the year will automatically be included on the list. If you would like a loved one who died elsewhere mentioned, let Fr Gerry know closer to the date of the Mass.

Bric-a-Brac sale

Rathlee Tidy Towns are holding a Bric-a-Brac sale in the Old Post Office, Rathlee, on Saturday, October 26, from 11am to 4pm and 7.30 to 8.30pm and on Sunday, October 27, from 11am to 4pm. The committee would appreciate donations of unwanted items. Funds raised will be utilised in the upkeep of Rathlee Village.

Eoghan Durkan awarded €24,000 Naughton Foundation Scholarship

On Saturday, October 12, Eoghan Durkan, Castleconnor, was awarded a Naughton Foundation Scholarship worth €24,000 at a ceremony in the Trinity Business School in Dublin. The award was presented by founding patrons of the Naughton Foundation, Dr. Martin Naughton, and his wife Carmel, who were joined by An Taoiseach Mr Simon Harris to present winning students with their awards and cheques.

Supporting academic and innovative excellence in Irish students, the Naughton Foundation Scholarship Awards are an investment in the future of Ireland's reputation as a country with outstanding graduates promoting the study of engineering, science, and technology at third level. Eoghan, a former student of St Muredach’s College Ballina, Mayo, has accepted a place studying Science at University College Dublin.

Eoghan Durkan joined 37 exceptional Irish students who were awarded third level scholarships towards their studies in the areas of engineering, science, technology, and maths. The prize winner’s former secondary school St Muredach’s College Ballina, Mayo was awarded a prize of €1,000 towards their school’s science facilities, for their support of their winning student.

Speaking about the growth and development of the programme over the past seventeen years, Dr. Martin commented; “Both Carmel and I are delighted by the growth of this program and the incredible community of alumni who are doing extraordinary work in education, research and industry at home and abroad. Today we are delighted to welcome a new cohort of wonderful young people to join this group and to support and encourage them in a small way with their undergraduate studies in Ireland. We firmly believe that these bright and engaging students who are passionate about their studies in the STEM areas will be Ireland’s leaders and wealth creators of the future.”
